Potassium - Feed Ingredient
Potassium is an essential macromineral in equine nutrition that plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contraction. It is the primary electrolyte found inside cells and is necessary for proper cellular function and hydration.
Forage, particularly fresh pasture and hay, is the primary source of potassium in a horse’s diet, and most horses easily meet their potassium requirements through normal forage consumption. However, horses in heavy work, those sweating excessively, or those with certain health conditions may require additional potassium supplementation to maintain electrolyte balance. Horses with Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP) should have their potassium intake carefully managed, as excess potassium can trigger muscle tremors or paralysis in affected individuals.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Potassium as an ingredient.
