Probiotics - Feed Ingredient
Probiotics are live microorganisms, primarily bacteria and yeasts, that are administered to animals with the intention of maintaining or restoring a balanced microbial population in the gastrointestinal tract. In equine nutrition, commonly used probiotic strains include species from the genera Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, and Saccharomyces (notably Saccharomyces cerevisiae). These organisms are selected for their ability to survive passage through the digestive tract and positively influence gut function.
In horse feeds and supplements, probiotics are used to support hindgut fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and microbial stability, particularly during periods of stress, dietary transition, or antibiotic therapy that may disrupt normal gut flora. They may help maintain or reestablish beneficial microbial populations, reduce the growth of pathogenic organisms, and promote conditions favorable for fiber digestion.
