Quinoa - Feed Ingredient
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is a pseudocereal native to the Andean region of South America. It is cultivated for its edible seeds, which are rich in protein, fiber, and various micronutrients, including magnesium, phosphorus, and iron. Quinoa contains a well-balanced amino acid profile, including higher levels of lysine compared to most cereal grains.
In equine nutrition, quinoa is not a conventional feed ingredient but may be used in specialized formulations for its protein quality and digestible energy content. The seeds are typically processed—washed and heat-treated—to remove saponins, naturally occurring compounds that can be bitter and potentially irritating if consumed in large amounts.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Quinoa as an ingredient.
