Rice Bran Oil - Feed Ingredient
Rice bran oil is an oil extracted from the outer layer of rice grains (Oryza sativa). It is a byproduct of the rice milling process and is known for its high content of unsaturated fatty acids, gamma-oryzanol, and vitamin E. The oil is commonly used in equine feed formulations due to its caloric density and nutritional benefits.
Rice bran oil is primarily included in horse diets as a source of fat, providing concentrated energy while being low in starch. The presence of gamma-oryzanol, a natural plant sterol, has been studied for its potential effects on muscle development and antioxidant properties. However, its specific impact on equine health remains an area of ongoing research.
Rice bran oil has an omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio of approximately 20:1, making it relatively high in omega-6 fatty acids compared to other oils, such as flaxseed oil. While omega-6 fatty acids are essential, excessive amounts in the diet relative to omega-3s may imbalance the diet.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Rice Bran Oil as an ingredient.
