Sea Buckthorn - Feed Ingredient
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a deciduous shrub native to Europe and Asia, known for its bright orange berries. In equine feed and supplement products, sea buckthorn is typically included in the form of dried berry powder, pulp, juice, or oil extracted from the fruit or seeds. These components are valued for their high content of bioactive compounds, including vitamins (notably vitamin C and E), flavonoids, carotenoids, and omega fatty acids.
As a feed ingredient, sea buckthorn is not used for its caloric or protein contribution but for its functional properties. The berries and oil contain a unique fatty acid profile, including omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), as well as antioxidants and plant sterols. These constituents have been investigated for their roles in supporting mucosal health, antioxidant defense, and metabolic function.
