Selenomethionine is an organic form of selenium in which the mineral selenium is incorporated into the amino acid methionine in place of sulfur. It is naturally found in plant-based protein sources, particularly cereal grains and legumes grown in selenium-rich soils. In equine nutrition, selenomethionine is used as a dietary selenium supplement due to its high bioavailability and capacity for tissue incorporation.

It is typically included in trace mineral premixes or vitamin-mineral supplements at levels aligned with total dietary selenium limits.
