Sepiolite Clay - Feed Ingredient
Sepiolite clay, also known as meerschaum, is a naturally occurring, fibrous magnesium silicate clay mineral. It is mined primarily from deposits in Spain, Turkey, and other regions with sedimentary marine origins.
In animal feed applications, including equine nutrition, sepiolite is used as a functional ingredient rather than a nutrient source. Its primary roles include serving as a pellet binder, anticaking agent, and mycotoxin binder. Due to its high surface area and absorptive capacity, sepiolite can improve pellet durability, reduce moisture-related clumping, and help adsorb undesirable substances such as toxins or heavy metals in the digestive tract.
While generally regarded as safe, sepiolite may bind not only to harmful compounds but also to certain nutrients or orally administered medications, potentially reducing their bioavailability. Care should be taken when using feeds or supplements containing sepiolite alongside critical nutrient therapies or medications.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Sepiolite Clay as an ingredient.
