Silicon - Feed Ingredient

Silicon is a trace mineral that naturally occurs in soils, plants, and water and is found in varying concentrations in forages and grains. In equine nutrition, it is typically included in feed formulations as a source of bioavailable silica, most commonly in the form of silicon dioxide or orthosilicic acid.

Silicon is believed to play a role in connective tissue integrity, particularly in the formation of collagen and glycosaminoglycans, which are essential components of cartilage and bone. For this reason, it is sometimes included in equine supplements targeted at joint and skeletal support.

While not classified as an essential nutrient for horses, some research has indicated that silicon may influence bone mineralization and structural health, particularly in growing horses or those under heavy training. However, its dietary requirements and exact physiological roles in equines are not yet fully established, and its inclusion is generally based on emerging evidence and anecdotal use.
