Sodium Bentonite - Feed Ingredient
Sodium bentonite is a naturally occurring clay composed primarily of montmorillonite, a type of smectite with high water absorption and swelling capacity. It is commonly used in animal feeds as a binder, anti-caking agent, and mycotoxin adsorbent.
In equine nutrition, sodium bentonite helps improve pellet quality and can assist in binding dietary toxins, particularly mycotoxins. Its high adsorption capacity allows it to trap certain harmful substances in the digestive tract.
However, because it is a non-specific binder, sodium bentonite may also bind to nutrients or medications, potentially reducing their availability. It is not intended for long-term continuous feeding and should be used in controlled amounts within balanced formulations.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Sodium Bentonite as an ingredient.
