Sodium Bicarbonate - Feed Ingredient
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) is a white, crystalline compound commonly used as a buffering agent in animal nutrition. It is a naturally occurring alkaline substance that helps regulate pH levels in the digestive system. In equine feed, sodium bicarbonate is often included to support digestive health, particularly in horses fed high-grain diets or those prone to hindgut acidosis.
As a buffering agent, sodium bicarbonate can help neutralize excess stomach acid and maintain a more stable pH in the digestive tract. However, its effects are transient, as it is quickly absorbed or excreted, requiring continuous supplementation for sustained impact. It can also be used as a sodium source.
