Sodium Hydroxide - Feed Ingredient
Sodium Hydroxide, also known as caustic soda or lye, is a highly alkaline, inorganic compound (NaOH) commonly used in industrial and food processing applications. It is a strong base that is highly reactive with organic materials and capable of altering chemical structures. In the feed industry, sodium hydroxide is not used as a nutrient but rather as a processing aid, particularly in the treatment of low-quality forages.
In equine nutrition, Sodium Hydroxide may be used indirectly in the production of alkali-treated forages, such as alkali-treated wheat straw or other fibrous crop residues. The purpose of this treatment is to break down lignin and improve fiber digestibility by making structural carbohydrates more accessible to microbial fermentation in the hindgut.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Sodium Hydroxide as an ingredient.
