Sodium Sulfate - Feed Ingredient
Sodium sulfate is an inorganic salt composed of sodium and sulfur, typically found in the form of sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na₂SO₄·10H₂O) or its anhydrous form (Na₂SO₄). It occurs naturally in mineral deposits or can be synthesized.
In equine feed formulations, sodium sulfate may be used as a source of supplemental sodium and sulfur, both of which are essential minerals. Sodium is critical for maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions, while sulfur is a component of certain amino acids and vitamins. However, sodium sulfate is not commonly used as a primary mineral source in equine diets, with other compounds like sodium chloride (salt) and magnesium sulfate more frequently employed.
Excessive inclusion of sodium sulfate can have a laxative effect, particularly in young or sensitive animals, and its use must be carefully managed within total dietary electrolyte and sulfur balances.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Sodium Sulfate as an ingredient.
