Sucrose - Feed Ingredient
Sucrose is a disaccharide composed of one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose. It is a naturally occurring sugar commonly extracted and refined from sugarcane or sugar beets. In animal feed, sucrose is used primarily as a source of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) and as a flavor enhancer due to its sweet taste.
In equine nutrition, sucrose may be included in small amounts in feeds, supplements, or treats to improve palatability and encourage feed intake. It provides a readily available source of energy, but its use must be carefully managed in horses with metabolic sensitivities, such as those with insulin dysregulation, equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), or a history of laminitis.
Inclusion levels are typically low and used strategically for formulation purposes or to enhance the acceptability of certain feed products.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Sucrose as an ingredient.
