Superoxide Dismutase - Feed Ingredient
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, playing a critical role in cellular defense against oxidative stress. It exists in multiple forms depending on its metal cofactor—commonly copper-zinc (Cu/Zn-SOD), manganese (Mn-SOD), or iron (Fe-SOD). In equine feed and supplement applications, SOD is typically sourced from natural materials such as bovine liver, marine organisms, or plant-based fermentation.
In equine nutrition, SOD is included in antioxidant support formulations aimed at managing oxidative stress related to exercise, aging, or illness. Because native SOD is sensitive to degradation in the gastrointestinal tract, some feed-grade forms are encapsulated or used in conjunction with protective carriers to improve stability and bioavailability. It may also be delivered indirectly via ingredients that promote endogenous SOD activity.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Superoxide Dismutase as an ingredient.
