Tartaric Acid - Feed Ingredient
Tartaric acid is a naturally occurring organic acid, chemically classified as a dicarboxylic acid. It is most commonly derived from grapes as a byproduct of the winemaking process, though it is also available in synthetic forms. In the feed industry, tartaric acid may be used as an acidifier or flavoring aid. It contributes a strong tart taste that enhances fruit flavors and can influence the palatability of certain formulations.
Its inclusion in equine products is more common in specialty feed additives rather than in concentrate feeds. Tartaric acid may be used to stabilize or preserve feed components by lowering pH, which can inhibit microbial spoilage and extend product shelf life. While generally recognized as safe at regulated levels, it is not a primary nutrient and excessive use may cause gastrointestinal irritation.
Tartaric acid is closely related to potassium bitartrate, commonly known as cream of tartar. Both compounds originate from the same source and may be used in different roles across food, pharmaceutical, and feed applications.
