Taurine - Feed Ingredient

Taurine is a sulfur-containing beta-amino acid that is not incorporated into proteins but plays critical roles in various physiological processes. It is found naturally in animal tissues and is typically synthesized endogenously from the amino acids methionine and cysteine in most mammals, including horses. Commercially, taurine is produced synthetically for inclusion in feed and supplements.

In equine nutrition, taurine is included in select formulations due to its involvement in bile acid conjugation, osmoregulation, membrane stabilization, and modulation of calcium signaling. Although horses can synthesize taurine, supplemental forms may be used in specific dietary situations or formulations targeting high-performance animals or those under metabolic stress.
