Tertiary Butyl Hydroquinone (TBHQ) - Feed Ingredient
Tertiary Butyl Hydroquinone (TBHQ) is a synthetic antioxidant derived from hydroquinone, with a tertiary butyl group added to increase its stability and effectiveness. It is commonly used in the food and feed industries to prevent oxidative rancidity in fats and oils, thereby extending shelf life and preserving product quality.
In animal feed formulations, including those for horses, TBHQ may be added to stabilize fat-containing ingredients such as vegetable oils, fish oil, or fat-soluble vitamins. Its primary function is to protect these components from degradation due to exposure to heat, light, or oxygen during processing and storage. TBHQ is used in very small concentrations, typically measured in parts per million (ppm), and is regulated for safety in feed applications.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Tertiary Butyl Hydroquinone (TBHQ) as an ingredient.
