Turmeric - Feed Ingredient

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a yellow-orange rhizome commonly used as a feed ingredient in equine nutrition. It contains bioactive compounds called curcuminoids, with curcumin being the most well-known. These compounds contribute to turmeric’s antioxidant properties and its traditional use in herbal formulations.

Turmeric is typically included in horse diets in dried, powdered form, or as an extract. However, due to its relatively low curcumin concentration, it must be fed at high rates to provide a meaningful amount of curcumin for a horse. Additionally, curcumin has low bioavailability, meaning it is poorly absorbed on its own. To enhance absorption, turmeric is often fed alongside black pepper (which contains piperine).
