Type-II Collagen - Feed Ingredient
Type II collagen is a structural protein predominantly found in cartilage, where it forms the bulk of the extracellular matrix. It consists of three identical alpha chains that form a triple helix structure, contributing to the tensile strength and resilience of cartilage tissue. This type of collagen is distinct from type I collagen, which is found primarily in tendons, ligaments, and bones.
In equine feed and supplement formulations, type II collagen is included as a functional ingredient derived from sources such as chicken sternum cartilage or bovine trachea. It is typically offered in its native (undenatured) form or as hydrolyzed collagen peptides. Native type II collagen is often used for its potential role in modulating immune responses related to joint tissues, while hydrolyzed forms serve as a source of amino acids that support connective tissue integrity.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Type-II Collagen as an ingredient.
