Verxite - Feed Ingredient
Verxite is a naturally occurring aluminosilicate mineral, specifically classified as a hydrated potassium aluminum silicate. It is a type of phyllosilicate clay mineral and is structurally related to mica and illite. In feed applications, verxite is used as a non-nutritive functional ingredient, typically for its adsorptive and binding properties.
In equine nutrition, verxite may be included in feed or supplement formulations as a flow agent, pellet binder, or mycotoxin binder. Its physical structure and high surface area allow it to adsorb moisture and certain contaminants, potentially reducing the effects of dietary mycotoxins or stabilizing loose feed mixtures. It is generally included in small quantities and is not absorbed by the animal.
Verxite is considered inert and safe for horses when used at appropriate inclusion levels. However, excessive use of aluminosilicate clays may interfere with the absorption of some nutrients or medications due to nonspecific binding in the gastrointestinal tract. Inclusion rates should be managed to avoid these potential interactions.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Verxite as an ingredient.
