Vinegar - Feed Ingredient

Vinegar is an aqueous solution of acetic acid typically produced through the fermentation of ethanol by acetic acid bacteria. It can be derived from various carbohydrate sources including apples, grains, or sugarcane. The acetic acid concentration in vinegar used for feed applications generally ranges from 4% to 6%. Variants include apple cider vinegar, white vinegar (from grain alcohol), and others depending on the fermentation substrate.

In equine nutrition, vinegar is used primarily for its functional properties. It may be added to feed or water to enhance palatability, reduce microbial growth, or assist in the management of digestive pH. It is occasionally included in supplements aimed at supporting digestive function or overall gut health, though it does not contribute significant nutritional value.

Vinegar is generally safe for horses when used in moderation. However, due to its acetic acid content, excessive or undiluted use could irritate the gastrointestinal tract or affect dental health. Proper dilution and controlled inclusion levels are important to avoid potential adverse effects.
