Wheat Germ Oil - Feed Ingredient
Wheat germ oil is a nutrient-dense oil extracted from the germ of the wheat kernel, which is the embryo of the wheat seed. It is obtained through mechanical or solvent extraction processes and is known for its high content of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic and oleic acids. It is also a rich natural source of vitamin E (tocopherols), along with other fat-soluble vitamins and antioxidants.
In equine nutrition, wheat germ oil is used as a supplemental fat source in feeds and oral products. It contributes dietary energy, supports skin and coat condition, and supplies vitamin E, an essential nutrient with antioxidant properties. Due to its high cost relative to other vegetable oils, it is generally used in specialty formulations or in targeted supplementation.
