Topic:Age Factors

Age factors in horses encompass a range of physiological and developmental changes that occur as horses mature from foals to adults and eventually into their senior years. These factors include variations in metabolic rate, immune function, and musculoskeletal development, which can influence a horse's health, performance, and nutritional needs. Age-related changes can also affect how horses respond to medications, recover from injuries, and maintain overall vitality. Researchers study these aspects to understand better how age impacts equine health and management. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the effects of age on equine physiology, health management, and disease susceptibility.
Gastric pH monitoring in healthy, suckling pony foals.
American journal of veterinary research    June 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 6 959-964
Baker SJ, Gerring EL.Gastric pH was monitored in neonatal foals from birth to 3 months of age. Background pH decreased, especially during the first week of life. Milk had complex effects that depended on pH prior to sucking, confounded by the age of the foal: nearly neutral background pH tended to be acidified after milk intake; moderately acid background pH tended to be neutralized; low background pH was only slightly increased by milk. Absolute magnitude of the effects of milk decreased with age. Existence of a proulcerative intragastric environment in preweaning foals is postulated, but this must be considered ...
Relationship of serum total calcium to serum albumin in dogs, cats, horses and cattle.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    June 1, 1993   Volume 34, Issue 6 360-364
Bienzle D, Jacobs RM, Lumsden JH.A retrospective study was performed in order to assess the relationship between serum calcium and serum albumin concentrations in domestic animals. Results of 9041 canine, 1564 feline, 2917 equine, and 613 bovine serum samples from hospitalized patients were examined by regression analysis. Subpopulations of cases with concurrent elevations in creatinine or that were less than six months of age were evaluated separately. Statistically significant linear relationships between calcium and albumin concentrations were established for each species (p <0.05). The coefficients of determination (r(...

Are tapeworms associated with equine colic? A case control study.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 3 224-226 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02948.x
Proudman CJ, Edwards GB.Faeces samples from 116 horses with colic and 115 non-colic cases were assayed by a centrifugation/floatation method for the presence of tapeworm eggs. Analysis of these data failed to demonstrate an association between tapeworm infection and colic of all types. The data were further analysed according to anatomical site of the lesion causing colic. The risk of ileocaecal colic was increased in the presence of tapeworms. Age, breed and sex were evaluated as possible confounding factors but had no association with the incidence of colic. This study suggests an association between tapeworms and ...
Assessment and treatment of equine humeral fractures: retrospective study of 54 cases (1972-1990).
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 3 203-207 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02944.x
Carter BG, Schneider RK, Hardy J, Bramlage LR, Bertone AL.Fractures of the humerus were diagnosed in horses at The Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Twenty-four horses (44.4%) were destroyed after radiographic assessment (mean age of 5.0 years). Surgical treatment was elected in 13 horses (24.1%, mean age of 0.42 years). Conservative management, consisting of prolonged stall rest, was chosen for 17 horses (31.5%, mean age of 2.2 years). In the surgically treated group, 3 foals (23.1%) all less than 2 months of age at the time of fracture and treated with intramedullary stack pinning, survived and became athletically sound. After con...

Neurology    May 1, 1993   Volume 43, Issue 5 966-971 doi: 10.1212/wnl.43.5.966
Mohammed HO, Cummings JF, Divers TJ, Valentine B, de Lahunta A, Summers B, Farrow BR, Trembicki-Graves K, Mauskopf A.Equine motor neuron disease (EMND), a newly described neurodegenerative disease, bears a striking resemblance to progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) in humans. We present a comparison of the equine and human diseases and the results of a case-control study conducted to identify intrinsic factors associated with EMND. Cases included all horses with a confirmed diagnosis of EMND diagnosed in the United States since 1985 (32 cases). Controls included horses diagnosed with either cervical stenotic myelopathy, equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy, or protozoan myelitis at the Veterinary Teaching ...
Serum levels of testosterone and oestrogens in normal and infertile stallions.
International journal of andrology    April 1, 1993   Volume 16, Issue 2 155-158 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2605.1993.tb01169.x
Inoue J, Cerbito WA, Oguri N, Matsuzawa T, Sato K.The serum concentrations of testosterone and oestrogens were determined in stallions classified as geldings, normal (according to age) or infertile (azoospermic). There were significant differences in testosterone and oestrogen levels between the groups. Normal concentrations of testosterone and total oestrogens were attained after 16 months of age. Castrated and immature horses ( 4 years). The results suggest that serum levels of testosterone and total oestrogens may provide a sensitive index of the endocrine function of the testis in male horses.

Australian veterinary journal    April 1, 1993   Volume 70, Issue 4 129-132 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1993.tb06103.x
Smyth GB, Young DW, Duran SH.Postprandial insulin and glucose concentrations were measured in 3 Arabian and 3 Thoroughbred foals at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months of age. Prefeeding serum insulin concentrations were similar in foals at 1 day (25.9 +/- 5.1 pmol/L), 1 week (32.4 +/- 5.8 pmol/L), and 1 month (38.2 +/- 7.9 pmol/L), but had increased significantly to 131.0 +/- 20.2 pmol/L at 3 months of age (P < 0.05). There was significantly increased serum insulin secretion after a feed in foals at 3 months of age (P < 0.05) when compared with that at younger ages. Prefeeding serum glucose concentrations ranged fr...

The Journal of veterinary medical science    April 1, 1993   Volume 55, Issue 2 333-335 doi: 10.1292/jvms.55.333
Miyamoto C, Takashima I, Karaiwa H, Sugiura T, Kamada M, Hashimoto N.To investigate the overall prevalence of chlamydial infections in light (i.e. non-draught) horses in Japan, 599 sera obtained from 12 localities in 1991 were tested for complement fixation antibodies. The mean antibody positive rates of the all sera were 15.2% (91/599) and the regional positive rates were higher in Honshu (19.1%, 48/251) and Kyushu (20.0%, 20/100) than in Hokkaido (9.3%, 23/248). In Honshu, the highest rate (56.0%, 28/50) was observed in Utsunomiya. Analysis of the positive rate in different age groups showed that the 2-5 years age-group had the highest prevalence of chlamydia...
Muscle characteristics in standardbreds of different ages and sexes.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 2 143-146 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02925.x
Ronéus M.Biopsy samples were taken from the middle gluteal muscle in 107 health Standardbred horses. The horses were separated according to sex and divided into 4 age groups (1, 2, 3 and 4-6 years). The proportion of Type I fibres increased with age (from 16 to 20%), irrespective of sex. The proportions of Type IIA and IIB fibres varied with age and differed between stallions and mares. Type IIA fibres increased in mares from 37 to 47% and in stallions from 40 to 48% and Type IIB fibres decreased from 49 to 34% in mares, and from 43 to 30% in stallions. Mares and stallions did not differ in enzyme acti...

Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 2 160-169 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(93)90051-g
Rivero JL, Galisteo AM, Agüera E, Miró F.Muscle biopsies were taken from the middle gluteal muscle of 143 untrained horses (83 Andalusians [AN] and 60 Arabians [AR]) ranging from 10 days to 24 years old. The horses were separated according to breed and sex and allotted to five age groups: A, 0 to three months; B, yearlings; C, two to three years; D, five to 10 years; and E, 11 to 24 years. There was an increase in the percentage of type I fibres (about 100 per cent) as well as a decrease in the percentage of type IIB fibres (AN, 50 per cent; AR, 40 per cent) over the five age groups. The percentage of type IIA fibres rose significant...
Haematological parameters of the Polish Primitive Horses.
Archivum veterinarium Polonicum    January 1, 1993   Volume 33, Issue 3-4 205-216
Krumrych W, Wiśniewski E, Danek J.Average values of chosen haematological parameters have been described in a population of 90 clinically normal Polish Primitive Horses. The comparison of the results with values given in literature for horses as a whole and for other breeds enabled us to state that Polish Primitive Horses' blood is characterized by relatively low values of RBC, PCV, segmented neutrophils and monocytes, and high percentage of lymphocytes. It was demonstrated that values of some blood parameters of examined animals are similar to typical results obtained for primitive and cold-blooded horses. Moreover, it was pr...
[Comparison of the career profiles of racehorses over three decades].
Berliner und Munchener tierarztliche Wochenschrift    January 1, 1993   Volume 106, Issue 1 15-17
Herzog B, Lindner A, Sommer H.To compare the career profiles of thoroughbred racehorses in Germany in different decades all horses which raced for the last time in the years 1966/67, 1976/77 and 1986/87 were selected from the annual report of the German Thoroughbred Racing Association. The number of racing horses increased within decades while the percentage of the horses which raced for the last time was equal in all years. It amounted yearly to about 30%. Most of the horses finished racing at three and four years of age. In 1966, 1967, 1976 and 1977 more than 50% of the horses began their career at the age of two years, ...
Equine T-lymphocyte MHC II expression: variation with age and subset.
Veterinary immunology and immunopathology    January 1, 1993   Volume 35, Issue 3-4 225-238 doi: 10.1016/0165-2427(93)90036-4
Lunn DP, Holmes MA, Duffus WP.This paper describes the characteristics of a monoclonal antibody (CVS10) that reacts with an equine leukocyte antigen. On the basis of tissue distribution and biochemical characteristics, this antigen is equine MHC II. The equine MHC II antigen was found on a large subset of T-lymphocytes in addition to all B-lymphocytes, as has been reported previously. In addition MHC II was found to be present on a large proportion of both the mutually exclusive equine T-lymphocyte subpopulations which express either the equine homologues of CD4, or CD8. In a study of changes in equine MHC II expression wi...
Clinical biochemical determinations in the Mangalarga-Paulista horse: reference values.
Acta veterinaria Hungarica    January 1, 1993   Volume 41, Issue 1-2 151-158
Novelli EL, Rodrigues NL, Chiacchio SB.Biochemical values are widely related with environmental agents, sex and age, and are used in disease diagnosis. Numerous reports have been published on the biochemical parameters of different breeds of horses. However, there is a paucity of information concerning Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), ceruloplasmin, copper and zinc determinations in the serum. Blood samples from a total of 60 horses of the Mangalarga-Paulista breed, representing three age groups (0 to 4 months old, 6 to 18 months old and adult) were examined. Male horses have a higher mean value of SOD, ceruloplasmin and copper th...

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 15, 1992   Volume 201, Issue 12 1900-1904
Lavoie JP, Carlson GP, George L.Hypertrophic osteopathy was diagnosed in 3 horses and in a pony, ranging in age from 8 to 21 years. There were 2 females, 1 sexually intact male, and 1 gelding. In 3 animals, hypertrophic osteopathy was associated with pulmonary abscesses, bronchogenic squamous cell carcinoma, and ovarian granulosa-cell tumor, respectively, and resulted in death or euthanasia. Duration of the condition ranged from 1 to 4 months. In 1 horse, hypertrophic osteopathy was believed to be secondary to pregnancy, and resolved following uncomplicated delivery of a live foal.
Clinical assessment of selenium status of livestock.
Journal of animal science    December 1, 1992   Volume 70, Issue 12 3928-3933 doi: 10.2527/1992.70123928x
Stowe HD, Herdt TH.Assessment of the selenium status of livestock is an important aspect of production medicine, but variations in reported values between laboratories and between methods may be > 30%. Reliable interpretations require considerable experience with an assay and an extensive database from field and research case samples of a variety of species. The Michigan State University Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory (MSU-ADHL) has offered Se analyses by acid-digestion and fluorometric detection since 1982. This laboratory expects serum Se values (nanograms per milliliter) of livestock to increase gradu...
Histological features of the dorsal cortex of the third metacarpal bone mid-diaphysis during postnatal growth in thoroughbred horses.
Journal of anatomy    December 1, 1992   Volume 181 ( Pt 3), Issue Pt 3 455-469
Stover SM, Pool RR, Martin RB, Morgan JP.The dorsal cortex of the equine third metacarpal mid-diaphyseal bone was characterised during growth by the histological and microradiographic examination of specimens from 30 horses ranging in age from 2 months to 8 y. Bone from horses aged less than 6 months was characterised by rapid periosteal apposition of circumferential trabeculae of woven bone that were next connected by radial trabeculae to the parent cortex. Deposition of lamellar bone on the inner trabecular surfaces resulted in rows of primary osteons. Replacement of primary bone occurred only after 4 months of age and preferential...

Regulation of matrix metabolism in equine cartilage explant cultures by interleukin 1.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 12 2278-2285
MacDonald MH, Stover SM, Willits NH, Benton HP.Explant cultures were set up, using articular cartilage obtained from metatarsophalangeal joints of 11 horses. Explants from 2 horses were used to determine culture conditions appropriate for tissue viability. The cartilage explants maintained steady-state metabolism of proteoglycans during a 13-day evaluation period. The metabolic response of equine articular cartilage to incubation with recombinant human interleukin 1 (0.01 to 100 ng/ml) was studied, using cartilage obtained from the remaining 9 horses, age of which ranged from 3 months to 20 years. Interleukin 1 induced a dose-dependent rel...

American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 10 1931-1934
Atwill ER, Mohammed HO, Dubovi E, Lopez J.A retrospective study was designed to determine the distribution of equine monocytic ehrlichiosis among the equine population in New York state, and to identify factors associated with risk of disease. Serum samples submitted to the diagnostic laboratory of the university during the period from January 1985 through December 1986 were examined for antibodies to Ehrlichia risticii, using the indirect fluorescent antibody technique. Factors evaluated included geographic origin and date of submission of the sample, and age, breed, and sex of the horse. Logistic regression analysis was used to iden...
Sex does not influence serum osteocalcin levels in standardbred horses of different ages.
Canadian journal of veterinary research = Revue canadienne de recherche veterinaire    October 1, 1992   Volume 56, Issue 4 379-381
Lepage OM, Marcoux M, Tremblay A, Dumas G.The influence of sex on serum osteocalcin levels was studied in 99 Standardbred horses, 52 males and 47 females. The age varied between the day of birth and five years old. A significant inverse correlation (r = -0.87, p 0.05). When the subjects were divided into five age groups of six months or less, 6 to 18, 18 to 24, 24 to 36 and between 36 and 60 months, no significant influence of sex was noted. A predictive model for serum osteocalcin levels (y = 52.19 - 0.026 age in days, r2 = 0.76) for Standardbred horses aged between the day of birth and five years is described.
[Ionized calcium and total calcium in the blood of cattle, sheep, swine and horses of different ages, reproductive stages and uses].
Berliner und Munchener tierarztliche Wochenschrift    October 1, 1992   Volume 105, Issue 10 328-332
Zepperitz H, Gürtler H.Concentrations of ionized calcium (Cai) in blood and of total calcium (Ca(t)) in serum were determined in 99 cattle, 58 sheep, 74 pigs and 59 horses of different age groups and reproductive periods as well as kinds of use of the animals. The values of Cai in blood in the groups taken into account for comparison of species decreased significantly in the order dairy cows < ewes < sows < horses. In cattle and pigs, there were significant differences in the Cai-level, according to age with the youngest animals having the highest values. In cows from the fourth lactation onward, one day po...

The development of naturally acquired cyathostome infection in ponies.
Veterinary parasitology    September 1, 1992   Volume 44, Issue 1-2 127-142 doi: 10.1016/0304-4017(92)90151-x
Love S, Duncan JL.Groups of animals of different ages and experience of previous parasite exposure were allowed to graze a single pasture for 5 weeks in autumn (7 October to 11 November). There was evidence that previous exposure modified cyathostome development, as acquired burdens in foals which had previously grazed were smaller and developed more slowly than those of helminth-naive animals of the same age. The burdens acquired by yearling and adult ponies were of a similar size to those of the previously grazed foals, but the incidence of arrested development was higher in the younger groups of foals and ye...
