Analyze Diet

Topic:Cholesterol

Cholesterol in horses is a lipid molecule found in the blood that plays a role in various physiological processes, including cell membrane structure and hormone synthesis. It is obtained from dietary sources and synthesized in the liver. Cholesterol levels in horses can be indicative of metabolic health and are influenced by factors such as diet, age, and activity level. Measuring cholesterol concentrations can assist in assessing the nutritional status and detecting metabolic disorders in equines. This page aggregates peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the metabolism, regulation, and clinical implications of cholesterol in equine health.
Equine serum lipids: serum lipids and glucose in Morgan and Thoroughbred horses and Shetland ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    December 11, 1975   Volume 36, Issue 12 1705-1708
Robie SM, Janson CH, Smith SC, O'Connor JT.Concentrations of serum phospholipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol, nonesterified fatty acids, and glucose were determined for 9 months (September, 1972, to May, 1973) in 19 fasting horses and ponies (8 Morgan horses, 7 Thoroughbred horses, and 4 Shetland Ponies). Morgan horses had higher concentrations of total lipid than did Thoroughbreds, although the relative proportions of each type of lipid were similar in the 2 breeds. Shetland Ponies had higher nonesterified fatty acid and lower glucose concentrations than did either breed of horse. In both breeds of horses, concentrations of seru...
Morphology and histochemistry of the endometrial cup.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    October 1, 1975   Issue 23 397-400
Yamauchi S.The luminal and cut surface of endometrial cups were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of PAS-positive and lipid materials in cup tissue was studied and most of the lipid material was localized in the large polyhedral cup cells. The lipid droplets gave positive reactions for DNPH in the cholesterol test of Schultz. They also exhibited autofluorescence and were therefore considered to be steroidal in nature. The significance of this possibility, particularly with regard to maintenance of early pregnancy in the mare, is discussed.
[Sterols of horse erythrocytes].
Ukrains'kyi biokhimichnyi zhurnal    March 1, 1975   Volume 47, Issue 2 221-225
Apukhovska LI, Vendt VP, Ivashkevych SP.Sterols of the whole erythrocytes, hemoglobin, membranes and their protein fractions were studied. Erythrocytes and their components were established to contain, besides cholesterol, other substances of the sterol nature. Cholesterol, 7-dehydrocholesterol and other substances of the cholesterol series are practically completely linked with the lipoproteid fractions of the erythrocyte membrane whereas all sterols found in the native erythrocytes in negligible amounts are bound with hemoglobin.

Formation of estrogens by the pregnant mare. II. Metabolism of 14C-acetate and 3H-cholesterol injected into the fetal circulation.
Endocrinology    November 1, 1971   Volume 89, Issue 5 1152-1157 doi: 10.1210/endo-89-5-1152
Bhavnani BR, Short RV, Solomon S.A mixture of 14C-sodium acetate and 3H-cholesterol was injected into the umbilical circulation of a pregnant mare in the 3OOth day of gestation. The abdomen was closed and urine was collected for 3.5 days. The mare delivered a normal live foal 23 days later. Steroid conjugates present in the maternal urine were hydrolyzed and separated into neutral and phenolic fractions. From the phenolic “sulfate” fraction estrone, 17α-estradiol, equilin, equilenin, and 17α-dihydroequilenin were isolated. Only estrone and 17α-estradiol contained both 3H and 14C, while the ring-B unsaturated estrogens ...

Composition of neutral lipids from erythrocytes of common mammals.
Journal of lipid research    July 1, 1967   Volume 8, Issue 4 374-379
Nelson GJ.The neutral lipids of the erythrocytes were investigated in several common mammals: cow, dog, goat, horse, pig, rabbit, rat, and sheep. Cholesterol content was determined by gas-liquid, thin-layer, and column chromatography, the last in conjunction with the IR spectrophotometry. The three methods yielded similar results. In every species investigated, cholesterol was the major neutral lipid; cholesteryl esters, triglycerides, and free fatty acids were detected only in trace amounts. It is concluded that these substances may have been contaminants from plasma lipoproteins or leukocytes rather t...

Levels of some chemical constituents in normal horse sera.

JENNINGS FW, MULLIGAN W.THE chemical analyses reported in this paper arc the result of an investigation on the sera of thirty normal horses from a heavy draught horse stable in Glasgow. Determinations have been made of scrum proteins (albumin and total globulin), alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, calcium, magnesium, inorganic phosphate and urea. Estimations of some of these constituents have already been carried out by a number of workers, but in the majority of cases the investigation has been confined to one or two constituents relevant to the problem being studied, and many of the data available are a by-product of...
