Ground reaction forces in horses, assessed from hoof wall deformation using artificial neural networks.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 6-8 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05041.x
Savelberg HH, Van Loon T, Schamhardt HC.An artificial neural network (ANN) was developed to investigate whether hoof wall deformation could be used to determine ground reaction forces (GRF) in horses. The ANN was taught this relationship under certain conditions and was able to generalise this knowledge to conditions for which it was not trained before. To acquire data to train and test the ANN, a horse was equipped with strain gauges attached to the dorsal, lateral and medial parts of the hoof to assess hoof wall deformation. A force plate was used to measure the GRFs. Both hoof wall deformation and GRF were recorded simultaneously...

Noninvasive photoelastic method to show distribution of strain in the hoof wall of a living horse.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 13-15 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05043.x
Davies HM.A photoelastic method used for materials testing in industry was adapted to show the distribution of strain through the hoof wall in the living horse. Strain was a change in length per unit length in the material of the loaded hoof wall compared with the unloaded condition. Coloured fringes appeared in the photoelastic plastic where there were differences in strain between adjacent sites (strain gradients) in the hoof. Strain distribution was observed in the shod and unshod hoof wall of the front hooves of 6 sound horses with hooves that appeared 'good' to visual inspection, and one unsound ho...
Recovery of equine forelimb function after desmotomy of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 27-29 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05047.x
Savelberg HH, Buchner HH, Becker CK.The recovery process of the equine locomotor system after desmotomy of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (AL-DDFT) was investigated by studying the movement patterns and joint moments in 6 horses before and 10 days and 6 months following surgery. Using a modified CODA-3 system the joint angles and angular velocities of the lower limb were assessed in the operated forelimb as before the operation. Simultaneously ground reaction forces were measured and joint moments calculated. At 10 days and 6 months after the operation the carpal joint started to bend earlier in the sta...
Modified carotid artery transposition for repetitive arterial blood gas sampling in large animals.
Journal of investigative surgery : the official journal of the Academy of Surgical Research    May 1, 1997   Volume 10, Issue 3 125-128 doi: 10.3109/08941939709032143
Orsini JA, Roby KA.A modified surgical procedure for creation of a carotid loop for repeated percutaneous sampling of arterial blood gas was performed on 8 Holstein heifers and 14 horses. This approach permitted sampling of blood gas via fine-needle aspiration (one to three times daily) and/or catheterization for extended periods. It offers several advantages over previously reported techniques, including greater accessibility, absence of postoperative complications such as hematoma formation, and absence of foreign materials supporting the loop.
Serodiagnosis of Babesia equi infection–a comparison of Dot-ELISA, complement fixation test and capillary tube agglutination test.
Veterinary parasitology    May 1, 1997   Volume 69, Issue 3-4 171-176 doi: 10.1016/s0304-4017(96)01124-7
Kumar S, Malhotra DV, Dhar S.The present study aimed to develop Dot-ELISA, complement fixation test (CFT) and capillary tube agglutination test (CAT) for serodiagnosis of Babesia equi infection and to compare their sensitivity with each other. For this study, sequential serum samples were collected from four donkeys experimentally infected with B. equi up to 90 days post infection (P.I.). B. equi antigen was prepared from the blood of a donkey showing more than 80% parasitaemia. Dot-ELISA, CF and CA tests were standardized as per the standard method. While performing CFT, it was observed that CFT standardized for the donk...
Magnetic resonance imaging of the equine metacarpophalangeal joint: three-dimensional reconstruction and anatomic analysis. Martinelli MJ, Kuriashkin IV, Carragher BO, Clarkson RB, Baker GJ.Magnetic resonance imaging was used to examine the equine metacarpophalangeal joint. Thirty-two saggital images generated by partial volume imaging were transferred to a computer for three-dimensional reconstruction and analysis. All the tissues constituting the metacarpophalangeal joint were readily identified. The most significant increase finding regarded the soft tissues on the palmar aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joint and their interactions with the proximal sesamoid bones. The equine metacarpophalangeal joint has not previously been evaluated using 3-dimensional imaging software.
Functional anatomy observations of the pharyngeal orifice of the equine guttural pouch (auditory tube diverticulum).
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    May 1, 1997   Volume 153, Issue 3 311-319 doi: 10.1016/s1090-0233(97)80065-2
Baptiste K.The pharyngeal orifice of the equine auditory tube has not been adequately described. Its larger size and position, further rostral within the nasopharynx compared with other species, cannot be easily explained, but could be important for the proposed brain-cooling function of the guttural pouches; however, unlike other species, it may not be the sole regulator of auditory tube aeration. A 'second orifice' (representing the final entrance to the auditory tube diverticulum) deserves recognition in performing a role in air exchange between the auditory tube, diverticulum and middle ear. The resu...
Functional characterization of equine neutrophils in response to calcium ionophore A23187 and phorbol myristate acetate ex vivo.
Veterinary immunology and immunopathology    May 1, 1997   Volume 56, Issue 3-4 233-246 doi: 10.1016/s0165-2427(96)05750-9
Moore T, Wilcke J, Chilcoat C, Eyre P, Crisman M.Equine neutrophils (PMN) play a critical role in inflammatory processes in horses. The objective of this study was to characterize equine PMN function ex vivo following stimulation with calcium ionophore A23187 (A23187) and phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). These stimulants trigger different branches of the PMN activation process that occurs in vivo. Equine PMN were isolated from the whole blood of six clinically normal geldings using a one-step discontinuous Percoll gradient technique. Neutrophil aggregation, degranulation, and superoxide anion production were evaluated in assay systems which ...

Impact during equine locomotion: techniques for measurement and analysis.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 9-12 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05042.x
Burn JF, Wilson A, Nason GP.Impact is implicated in the development of several types of musculoskeletal injury in the horse. Characterisation of impact experienced during strenuous exercise is an important first step towards understanding the mechanism for injury. Measurement and analysis of large, short duration impacts is difficult. The measurement system must be able to record transient peaks and high frequencies accurately. The analysis technique must be able to characterise the impact signal in time and frequency. This paper presents a measurement system and analysis technique for the characterisation of large impac...
Detection of latency-associated transcripts of equid herpesvirus 1 in equine leukocytes but not in trigeminal ganglia.
Journal of virology    May 1, 1997   Volume 71, Issue 5 3437-3443 doi: 10.1128/JVI.71.5.3437-3443.1997
Chesters PM, Allsop R, Purewal A, Edington N.Results from Southern hybridization and PCR amplification experiments using a randomly synthesized reverse transcription-PCR product showed that peripheral blood leukocytes from horses showing no clinical signs of disease expressed a putative latency-associated transcript antisense to and overlapping the 3' end of the equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) immediate-early gene (gene 64). A PCR product derived from this transcript has > or =96% identity with the published EHV-1 sequence. In situ hybridization studies of equine bronchial lymph nodes corroborated these findings and are consistent with re...
Sperm head morphometry analysis of ejaculate and dismount stallion semen samples.
Animal reproduction science    May 1, 1997   Volume 47, Issue 1-2 149-155 doi: 10.1016/s0378-4320(96)01634-x
Gravance CG, Champion Z, Liu IK, Casey PJ.The evaluation of seminal characteristics is important in the clinical detection of stallion subfertility. Conventional semen evaluation includes subjective determination of sperm concentration, motility, and gross morphology. Due to the subjectivity and variability of the manual morphology assessment, computer automated sperm morphology analyses has been developed. Computer automated sperm morphology analysis was applied in the current study to determine if the morphometric measurements of sperm heads from collected and dismount samples of the same ejaculate were similar. If the post-ejaculat...

Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 20-22 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05045.x
Caudron I, Miesen M, Grulke S, Vanschepdael P, Leroy P, Serteyn D.The authors used a new radiological method to assess asymmetrical articular compression of the interphalangeal joints. This method was based on the measurements of 3 angles obtained on dorsopalmar radiographs. Variations of these angles were studied during experimental asymmetrical bearing on unshod feet. It was concluded that 2 angles were interesting parameters to assess asymmetrical articular compression and to define the position of the phalanx in the horny box. Furthermore, variations of these angles induced by experimental asymmetrical bearing were compared without shoe, with a standard ...

Limits of detection and quantitation were 3.4 and 5.6 ng/ml for serum and 16.9 and 33.1 ng/ml for urine, respectively. The recoveries exceeded 96% for urine and 79% for serum. Urine samples from race horses and urine and serum samples from a ...
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) versus conventional IVF on abattoir-derived and in vitro-matured equine oocytes.
Theriogenology    April 15, 1997   Volume 47, Issue 6 1139-1156 doi: 10.1016/s0093-691x(97)00095-2
Dell'Aquila ME, Cho YS, Minoia P, Traina V, Fusco S, Lacalandra GM, Maritato F.Conventional IVF as well as several assisted microfertilization techniques have shown limited success in the horse. After recent positive results achieved with intracytoplasmic injection of a single spermatozoon (ICSI) in human IVF, we chose to try the method in the horse. We compared conventional IVF to ICSI by fertilization rates of oocytes with compact and expanded cumuli and by developmental potential of the resulting embryos. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were obtained by aspirating the follicular fluid from the ovaries of slaughtered mares. Complexes showing complete cumulus investment...
[Idiopathic pericardial effusion with tamponade in a Friesian gelding].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    April 15, 1997   Volume 122, Issue 8 216-219
Wijnberg ID, Vink-Nooteboom M, Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM.A 7-year-old Friesian gelding was referred to the Department of Large Animal Medicine and Nutrition of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine because of an inadequate response to treatment for vague symptoms of colic. An extensive physical examination showed there to be circulatory problems, with right-sided decompensation. Heart sounds were muffled on both sides of the thorax, and ECG showed a low voltage and variable amplitude of the QRS complex. Further investigations indicated idiopathic pericardial effusion. Pericardiocentesis was performed and supportive therapy started. Three weeks later th...
