Topic:Clinical Study

Clinical studies in equine research involve the systematic investigation of health and disease in horses through structured scientific methods. These studies aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatments, understand disease mechanisms, and improve veterinary care practices. Clinical studies can include randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and case-control studies. They may focus on various aspects such as pharmacokinetics, therapeutic interventions, and diagnostic techniques. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the design, implementation, and findings of clinical studies in equine medicine, providing insights into their impact on horse health and veterinary practices.
[Non-invasive patient monitoring in veterinary medicine: pulse oximetry and capnography. II. Capnography].
Tierarztliche Praxis    February 1, 1995   Volume 23, Issue 1 1-16
Alef M, Oechtering G.Capnography measures carbon dioxide concentration or partial pressure of the respiratory gas continuously and non-invasively. The endtidal value is of great diagnostic value, it corresponds approximately to the arterial value, except for ventilation-perfusion-mismatching (horse), shunting (horse), or increased dead-space-ventilation (panting in the dog). Capnography primarily serves for monitoring of spontaneous and artificial ventilation, it is a reliable method for detecting hypo- and hyperventilation. Because metabolism and circulation influence the amount of carbon dioxide eliminated in th...
Pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin in ponies.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    February 1, 1995   Volume 18, Issue 1 7-12 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2885.1995.tb00543.x
Dowling PM, Wilson RC, Tyler JW, Duran SH.The pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin was investigated in healthy, mature ponies. Ciprofloxacin was administered intravenously to six ponies at a dose of 5 mg per kg body weight. Seven days later, ciprofloxacin was administered orally to each pony at the same dose. Intravenous ciprofloxacin concentration vs. time data best fit a two-compartment open model with first-order elimination from the central compartment. Mean plasma half-life, based on the terminal phase, was 157.89 min (harmonic mean). Total body clearance of ciprofloxacin was 18.12 +/- 3.99 mL/min/kg. Volume of distribution at stead...
Amphotericin B treatment of Candida arthritis in two horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    February 1, 1995   Volume 206, Issue 3 338-341
Madison JB, Reid BV, Raskin RE.Infectious arthritis caused by Candida spp was diagnosed in 2 horses. Source of infection was by direct inoculation in 1 horse and was presumed to be hematogenous in the other horse. On microbial culturing of synovial fluid and synovial membrane specimens, the organisms were isolated in both horses. In both horses, the joint infections resolved after i.v. administration of amphotericin B and joint drainage; however, 1 horse was eventually euthanatized because of signs of cervical pain and progressively worsening ataxia. Fungal organisms isolated on microbial culturing of joint specimens in hor...

Haemodynamic effects of hyoscine-N-butylbromide in ponies.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    February 1, 1995   Volume 18, Issue 1 13-16 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2885.1995.tb00544.x
Geimer TR, Ekström PM, Ludders JW, Erichsen DF, Gleed RD.The haemodynamic effects of hyoscine-N-butylbromide (0.30 mg/kg, intravenously) were studied in eight adult ponies in a blinded two-period crossover experiment with repeated measures. Values for heart rate were 63%, 48% and 13% greater than control values at 1, 16 and 46 min, respectively, after administration of hyoscine-N-butylbromide. Cardiac output increased by 16% at 16 min after drug injection. Mean right atrial pressure was decreased by 79%, 63%, 45% and 52% at 1, 16, 46 and 61 min, respectively, after drug administration. Stroke volume was decreased by 32% at 1 min and pulmonary arteri...
Ontogeny and ultradian rhythms of adrenocorticotropin and cortisol in the late-gestation fetal horse.
The Journal of endocrinology    February 1, 1995   Volume 144, Issue 2 271-283 doi: 10.1677/joe.0.1440271
Cudd TA, LeBlanc M, Silver M, Norman W, Madison J, Keller-Wood M, Wood CE.Fetal maturation and the timing of parturition in both sheep and primates are thought to be controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis but little is known about the endocrinology of the equine fetus. We investigated the ontogeny of plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol and corticosteroid binding capacity in the late-gestation fetal horse. We also wished to determine whether there is ultradian rhythmic release of ACTH and cortisol in fetal horses and we compared fetuses to maternal and non-pregnant adult horses. Six fetuses, 278-304 days gestation (ter...
Electrostatics of hemoglobins from measurements of the electric dichroism and computer simulations.
Biophysical journal    February 1, 1995   Volume 68, Issue 2 655-664 doi: 10.1016/S0006-3495(95)80226-2
Antosiewicz J, Porschke D.Hemoglobins from normal human cells, from sickle cells, and from horse were investigated by electrooptical methods in their oxy and deoxy forms. The reduced linear dichroism measured as a function of the electric field strength demonstrates the existence of permanent dipole moments in the range of 250-400 Debye units. The reduced limiting dichroism is relatively small (< or = 0.1); it is negative for hemoglobin from sickle cells and positive for the hemoglobins from normal human cells and from horse. The dichroism decay time constants are in the range from about 55 to 90 ns. Calculations of th...
[Demonstration of two trimethoprim/sulfonamide combinations in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of horses and determination of blood levels].
Tierarztliche Praxis    February 1, 1995   Volume 23, Issue 1 59-65
Fey K, Klatt P, Schmidt H, Sasse HH.Five healthy horses were given a sulfadoxine/trimethoprim combination (Borgal, Hoechst AG) i.v. on day 1. The next ten days the horses got once a day a sulfadimethoxine/trimethoprim combination orally (Trafigal, Hoechst AG). The doses were given as recommended. One horse received no medicaments for control. On each horse six bronchoalveolar lavages were performed. Blood samples were taken to calculate blood levels and elimination half lives. To determine the amount of substances in lavage fluid and plasma the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used. Regularly low quantities of s...
Lag screw stabilization of a cervical vertebral fracture by use of computed tomography in a horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    January 15, 1995   Volume 206, Issue 2 221-223
Barnes HG, Tucker RL, Grant BD, Roberts GD, Prades M.A traumatic fracture of C2 was diagnosed radiographically in a 1-year-old German Warm-blood stallion. Fracture configuration was difficult to see on survey radiographs. Computed tomography yielded a more accurate assessment of the fracture and facilitated fracture repair with cortical lag screws. Precise screw placement, to avoid spinal cord damage, was obtained by use of computed tomography. Follow-up radiography revealed normal bone healing, and the horse was in dressage schooling 24 months after surgery.
A pulmonary granular cell tumour with associated hypertrophic osteopathy in a horse.
New Zealand veterinary journal    January 6, 1995   Volume 43, Issue 3 123 doi: 10.1080/00480169.1995.36544
Sutton RH, Coleman GT.Abstract Extract A 15-year-old pony mare developed firm irregular bony swellings on all four legs. These were most severe around the carpal and fetlock joints of the forelegs, restricting both flexion and extension. Over about 6 months the horse had periodic bouts of coughing. She showed moderate weight loss and a depressed demeanour.
A one-stage marsupialization procedure for management of infected umbilical vein remnants in calves and foals.
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1995   Volume 24, Issue 1 32-35 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1995.tb01290.x
Edwards RB, Fubini SL.Five Holstein calves and two foals with omphalophlebitis were treated by surgical marsupialization of the umbilical vein remnant because complete resection of the infected tract was not possible. The infected umbilical stalk was resected, and the umbilical vein remnant was marsupialized in a one-stage procedure by suturing it into the abdominal wall lateral to the abdominal incision. Antimicrobial drugs were administered, and the marsupialized tract was irrigated until closure by second intention healing. Cellulitis associated with the marsupialization site occurred in two calves but resolved ...
Immunisation of mares to control endometritis caused by Streptococcus zooepidemicus.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1995   Volume 58, Issue 1 75-81 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(95)90093-4
Widders PR, Warner S, Huntington PJ.Normal mares were immunised by the intramuscular and intrauterine administration of an antigen with adjuvant and they and unimmunised control mares were later challenged by the intrauterine instillation of pathogenic Streptococcus zooepidemicus; the response of all the mares was monitored clinically and bacteriologically for seven days. Significantly fewer S zooepidemicus were present in cervical swabs taken from the immunised mares than from the control mares (P < 0.01) and the degree of inflammation in the genital tract of the immunised mares was also significantly less (P < 0.001). Th...
Continuous in vitro cultivation of erythrocytic stages of Babesia equi.
Parasitology research    January 1, 1995   Volume 81, Issue 4 355-358 doi: 10.1007/BF00931544
Zweygarth E, Just MC, de Waal DT.The protozoan parasite Babesia equi, a causative agent of equine piroplasmosis, was continuously cultivated in horse erythrocytes. The parasites were isolated from a carrier horse at a time when no parasite was detected in a thin blood smear. The culture medium consisted of modified medium 199 supplemented with 40% non-heat-inactivated horse serum in a humidified atmosphere containing 5% CO2, 2% O2, and 93% N2 at 37 degrees C. Parasites were detected after 2 days in culture. When the percentage of parasitized erythrocytes (PPE) reached 1%, the cultures were transferred into a humidified atmosp...
Laboratory diagnosis of equine pituitary pars intermedia adenoma.
Domestic animal endocrinology    January 1, 1995   Volume 12, Issue 1 35-39 doi: 10.1016/0739-7240(94)00006-m
van der Kolk JH, Wensing T, Kalsbeek HC, Breukink HJ.The objective of the study was to determine the sensitivity with which an adenoma of the pars intermedia of the pituitary gland can be predicted in horses by measuring the basal concentrations of glucose, cortisol, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), and insulin, the urinary concentration of corticoids, the urinary corticoid:creatinine ratio, and the plasma cortisol concentration after the administration of 25 IU of ACTH intravenously. The records of 24 cases of histologically confirmed equine pituitary pars intermedia adenomas were used. An adenoma of the pars intermedia of the pituitary gland in hor...
Characterization of normal tidal breathing flow-volume loops for thoroughbred horses.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1995   Volume 19, Issue 4 331-342 doi: 10.1007/BF01839315
Guthrie AJ, Beadle RE, Bateman RD, White CE.The purpose of this study was to characterize the normal equine tidal breathing flow-volume loop (TBFVL). The study was performed using 18 healthy Thoroughbred horses. TBFVLs constructed from data collected from resting horses had a typical biphasic inspiratory and expiratory phase. The interindividual variability of the indices used to describe TBFVLs was in the range 16-32%, which is comparable to the variability of other measures of equine pulmonary mechanics. The large variability of these data probably limits the value of resting TBFVL indices for detecting subclinical respiratory conditi...
Molecular analysis of an XY mare with gonadal dysgenesis.
Hereditas    January 1, 1995   Volume 122, Issue 2 109-112 doi: 10.1111/j.1601-5223.1995.00109.x
Pailhoux E, Cribiu EP, Parma P, Cotinot C.In this study, cytogenetic analysis of an infertile mare revealed a 64, XY karyotype. The XY sex-reversed animal had a female phenotype with gonadal dysgenesis. Using Southern blot analysis, we tested for the presence of two Y-specific genes SRY and ZFY by using DNA isolated from peripheral blood leukocytes. The results showed that at least the DNA-binding domain of the SRY gene was deleted from the Y chromosome of the XY mare but that the ZFY gene was present on this chromosome.
Effect of food deprivation on baseline iodothyronine and cortisol concentrations in healthy, adult horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1995   Volume 56, Issue 1 116-121
Messer NT, Johnson PJ, Refsal KR, Nachreiner RF, Ganjam VK, Krause GF.Six healthy, adult horses, with normal (mean +/- SEM) baseline serum concentrations of total triiodothyronine (T3, 1.02 +/- 0.16 nmol/L), free T3 (FT3, 2.05 +/- 0.33 pmol/L), total thyroxine (T4, 19.87 +/- 1.74 nmol/L), free T4 (FT4, 11.55 +/- 0.70 pmol/L), total reverse T3 (rT3, 0.68 +/- 0.06 nmol/L), and cortisol (152.75 +/- 17.50 nmol/L), were judged to be euthyroid on the basis of response to a standardized thyroid-stimulating hormone response test. Serum concentrations of T3, FT3, T4, FT4, rT3, and cortisol were determined immediately before and every 24 hours during a 4-day period of foo...

Bracher V, Steiger R, Huser S.In the present study the breath hydrogen (H2) excretion test was combined with the xylose absorption test in 4 normal horses and 9 clinical patients with chronic diarrhea (n = 3) or chronic weight loss without diarrhea (n = 6). All horses underwent a thorough clinical examination. Laboratory evaluations consisted of haematology and serum biochemistry as well as bacteriological and parasitological examination of feces. In addition, serum electrophoresis and abdominocentesis was performed in all the clinical patients. Gastroscopy was carried out in 6 patients and rectal biopsies were obtained fr...
Stress protection afforded by a cast on plate fixation of the distal forelimb in the horse in vitro.
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1995   Volume 24, Issue 1 49-54 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1995.tb01292.x
Parente EJ, Nunamaker DM.Six forelimb specimens from three adult horses had the fetlock joint fused by application of a dorsal plate and by a screw placed in lag fashion through the metacarpus to each proximal sesamoid bone. Five specimens were instrumented on the central dorsal surface of the plate with a single rosette strain gage, and the plate of the sixth specimen was instrumented with four longitudinally oriented single-axis strain gages. The specimens were loaded axially in compression to 4,000 N in a cast (test 1), in a cast with a heel block (test 2), and uncast (test 3). The principal angle of strain in all ...
How the horse moves: 1. Significance of graphical representations of equine forelimb kinematics.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 1 31-38 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03029.x
Back W, Schamhardt HC, Savelberg HH, van den Bogert AJ, Bruin G, Hartman W, Barneveld A.The kinematics of 24 two-year-old Dutch Warmblood horses were recorded at the trot (4 m/s) on a high-speed treadmill to study the coordination of joints within the equine forelimb. Joint angle-time, angle-angle, stick, and marker diagrams were used to show forelimb motion graphically. Because the kinematic data referred to the joint angles of the horse standing squarely and were time-standardised to the duration of the stride cycle, mean joint curves could be calculated for the total group. The motion of each segment in the equine forelimb during a complete stride is described and its function...
Acceleration and timing of fertile ovulation in cyclic mares with a deslorelin implant.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1995   Volume 36, Issue 4 393-400 doi: 10.1186/BF03547654
Gånheim A, Gånheim A, Jöchle W.In a blinded trial, the effectiveness and safety of 2.2 mg of the GnRH analog deslorelin acetate, administered in a short-term implant (STI) to normally cycling mares in estrus with a dominant ovarian follicle of 30 mm in diameter or larger, were evaluated, using a placebo implant as a negative control. A total of 39 mares received treatments at admittance with pre-randomized implants containing either 2.2 mg or 0 mg deslorelin. Mares were teased daily and examined rectally with ultrasound at 24 h intervals to determine time to ovulation and duration of estrus. The number of breedings and the ...
Characterization of a density-corrected ultrasonic pneumotachometer for horses.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    January 1, 1995   Volume 78, Issue 1 359-367 doi: 10.1152/jappl.1995.78.1.359
Beadle RE, Guthrie AJ, Kou AH.A density-corrected ultrasonic pneumotachometer designed specifically for horses (UF202) was evaluated and characterized with the aid of a custom-built apparatus. UF202 provided voltage outputs for airflow through and gas density within the flowhead. Baseline stability for flow channel output (VUF202) was or = 0.9976). Under optimal conditions, VUF202 accuracy was determined to be +/- 1.00% FS and repeatability was +/- 0.78% FS. VUF202 resolution was 24 ml/s. The rise time for VUF202 was 18 ms, and the -3-dB point was 18 Hz; digital compensation provided a flat frequency response to 32 Hz. VU...
Equine parafilariosis in Iran.
Veterinary parasitology    January 1, 1995   Volume 56, Issue 1-3 189-197 doi: 10.1016/0304-4017(94)00658-y
Maloufi F.From March to September 1991, horses (n = 1567), donkeys (n = 112) and mules (n = 96) were examined for equine parafilariosis by random sampling from different areas of Iran. The clinical signs of equine parafilariosis were observed in 136 cases of two northern areas (1.4% and 41.3% infection rate) and one northeastern area (6.3% infection rate). Most of the infected cases were confirmed by laboratory findings. All infected cases were followed up to establish the epidemiological features. The results suggest that there is one enzootic area in Iran, the Caspian coast and Persian Turkman steppes...
The equine enteric nervous system–neuron characterization and distribution in adults and juveniles.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1995   Volume 19, Issue 6 433-449 doi: 10.1007/BF01839331
Doxey DL, Pearson GT, Milne EM, Gilmour JS, Chisholm HK.A study of myenteric and submucosal plexuses was undertaken in the jejunum and ileum of horses and ponies in which no clinical or pathological evidence of intestinal abnormality was apparent. Complete transverse sections of the intestine, stained by a modified haematoxylin and eosin method, were examined using up to 20 sequential sections per animal. Information was gathered from adult, juvenile and fetal equidae. In adults, the longitudinal muscle layers were thinner than the circular muscle layers and the ileum had thicker layers compared to the jejunum. In adults, the submucosal plexus had ...
Large equine blastocysts are damaged by vitrification procedures.
Reproduction, fertility, and development    January 1, 1995   Volume 7, Issue 1 113-117 doi: 10.1071/rd9950113
Hochi S, Fujimoto T, Oguri N.Viability following vitrification of equine blastocysts with different sizes was investigated in vitro. Twenty-four blastocysts were classified into three groups according to their diameters ( 300 microns; n = 8 each). The solution used for vitrification was defined as EFS and contained 40% ethylene glycol, 18% Ficoll and 0.3 M sucrose in modified-phosphate-buffered saline (m-PBS). During pretreatment with 20% ethylene glycol in m-PBS for 20 min, the larger blastocysts responded to the osmotic pressure caused by 20% ethylene glycol more slowly than the smaller blastocysts. Single blastocysts w...
The effects of three models of airway disease on tidal breathing flow-volume loops of thoroughbred horses.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1995   Volume 19, Issue 6 517-527 doi: 10.1007/BF01839340
Guthrie AJ, Beadle RE, Bateman RD, White CE.The effects of histamine and methacholine aerosols and of a fixed inspiratory resistance on tidal breathing flow-volume loops (TBFVL) were investigated using 18 unsedated, standing, healthy thoroughbred horses. The data were first analysed using traditional flow-volume loop indices and then reduced using standardized factor scoring coefficients obtained in a previous study in this laboratory using similar experimental techniques. On the basis of resting TBFVL analysis, the degree of pulmonary dysfunction caused by inhalation of histamine and methacholine aerosols with concentrations of 10 and ...
Production of monoclonal antibodies in horses.
Methods in molecular biology (Clifton, N.J.)    January 1, 1995   Volume 45 55-60 doi: 10.1385/0-89603-308-2:55
Perryman LE, Mason PH.Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) have been successfully used to evaluate immune responses in horses, and to target important antigens of equine infectious agents to which protective immune responses may be directed (1–5). Most of these studies are performed with murine MAb produced by fusing spleen cells from immunized mice with an appropriate myeloma cell line, as described in Chapter 3. However, there are experimental questions for which murine MAb are not adequate. These include: 1.Definition of microbial epitopes recognized by the infected host; 2.Identification of immunodominant epito...
Pituitary-adrenal activity and opioid release in ponies during thiopentone/halothane anaesthesia.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1995   Volume 58, Issue 1 35-41 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(95)90085-3
Luna SP, Taylor PM.The effect of thiopentone/halothane anaesthesia on the release of endogenous opioid, adrenocorticotrophin, arginine vasopressin, cortisol and catecholamine was investigated in ponies. The contribution made by halothane itself was studied by maintaining six ponies with a constant 1.2 per cent end tidal halothane concentration and five with a concentration ranging between 0.8 and 1.2 per cent. Cardiorespiratory depression was more prolonged in the ponies receiving a constant 1.2 per cent end tidal halothane concentration than in those which received less halothane. Plasma lactate concentration i...
Aggregate risk study of exposure to endophyte-infected (Acremonium coenophialum) tall fescue as a risk factor for laminitis in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1995   Volume 56, Issue 1 22-26
Rohrbach BW, Green EM, Oliver JW, Schneider JF.Loline and ergot alkaloids found in endophyte-infected (Acremonium coenophialum) tall fescue (EITF) cause vasoconstriction of equine vessels in vitro. An aggregate risk study was used to evaluate the association between horses exposed to EITF and development of laminitis. Veterinary teaching hospitals participating in the Veterinary Medical Data Base were grouped by whether equine accessions were likely to have been at high, moderate, or low risk for exposure to EITF. From 1980-1990, there were 185,781 accessions, of which 5,536 had diagnosis of laminitis. Proportion of equine accessions with ...
