Topic:Diagnostic Technique

Diagnostic techniques in equine medicine encompass a range of procedures and tools used to identify diseases, injuries, or other health conditions in horses. These techniques include imaging methods such as radiography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as laboratory tests like blood work and tissue biopsies. Each diagnostic method provides specific information that can aid in the assessment and management of equine health issues. Radiography is commonly used for evaluating bone structures, while ultrasonography is useful for soft tissue examination. MRI offers detailed images of both soft and hard tissues, though its use is limited by cost and availability. Laboratory tests can detect biochemical and hematological changes indicative of disease. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the development, application, and efficacy of various diagnostic techniques in equine veterinary practice.

Cytological and bacteriological sampling from filters used for embryo recovery to evaluate the uterine status of donor mares.
Acta veterinaria Hungarica    September 29, 2018   Volume 66, Issue 3 462-473 doi: 10.1556/004.2018.041
Pérez-Marín CC, Vizuete G, Borge C, Galisteo JJ.While testing for uterine bacterial infection is usually performed prior to artificial insemination (AI), samples taken during or after embryo flushing are generally not assessed either in subfertile and old mares or in fertile mares, even though knowledge of the status of the uterine environment in which the embryo is to develop would help to predict the outcome of embryo transfer programmes. The presence of bacteria and inflammatory cells in the liquid retained in the filter after uterine flushing in donors was determined at the moment of embryo recovery. Primarily, a group of mares (n = 8) ...

BioMed research international    September 25, 2018   Volume 2018 8309816 doi: 10.1155/2018/8309816
Rebollo B, Sarraseca J, Lecollinet S, Abouchoaib N, Alonso J, García-Bocanegra I, Sanz AJ, Venteo Á, Jiménez-Clavero MA.West Nile virus (WNV) is a zoonotic arboviral pathogen affecting humans, birds, and horses. Vaccines are available for veterinary use, which efficiently prevent the infection in horses. Most common diagnostic tools rely on the identification of the agent (RT-PCR, virus isolation), or on the detection of antibodies (IgM and IgG) recognizing structural proteins of the virus or neutralizing virus infection in cell cultures (virus-neutralization tests). The recent emergence of WNV in different parts of the world has resulted in an increase in the vaccination of horses in many countries. Methods fo...

BMC veterinary research    September 24, 2018   Volume 14, Issue 1 290 doi: 10.1186/s12917-018-1620-z
Rijckaert J, Pardon B, Van Ham L, Joosten P, van Loon G, Deprez P.When surgical treatment of cervical vertebral malformation is considered, precise localization of compression sites is essential, but remains challenging. Magnetic motor evoked potentials (mMEP) from paravertebral muscles are useful in localizing spinal cord lesions, but no information about cervical muscle mMEP in horses is available yet. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the possibility, normal values, inter- and intra-observer agreement and factors that have an effect on cervical mMEP in healthy horses. Methods: Transcranial magnetic stimulation was performed on 50 normal ho...
Molecular and morphological characterization of third instar Palaearctic horse stomach bot fly larvae (Oestridae: Gasterophilinae, Gasterophilus).
Veterinary parasitology    September 24, 2018   Volume 262 56-74 doi: 10.1016/j.vetpar.2018.09.011
Li XY, Chen YO, Wang QK, Li K, Pape T, Zhang D.Species of Gasterophilus are obligate parasites of equids and may induce severe, even lethal myiasis. However, identification of the third instar Gasterophilus larva at the species level is still problematic predominantly due to a shortage of diagnostic morphological features and incomplete molecular libraries. Testing the suitability of three different molecular markers showed that the traditional 650 bp barcode region near the 5' terminus of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) served as a better tool for species-level identification than a 663 bp region near the 3' terminus of COI and a...

Our findings unveil the existence of PC sensory organelles in different epididymal cell types according to postnatal development stage. Primary cilia are sensory organelles that orchestrate major signaling pathways during organ development and homeostasis. Epididymal PC have been detected in the horses, donkey and mules but their cell-lineage specificity has never been investigated in this organ. A longitudinal study was performed by examining tissue from n = 3 to n = 10 transgenic mice at different times ...
Development and evaluation of a multiplex reverse-transcription real-time PCR assay for detection of equine respiratory disease viruses. Ghoniem SM, El Deeb AH, Aggour MG, Hussein HA.We developed a multiplex reverse-transcription real-time PCR (RT-rtPCR) assay for the simultaneous detection of the main equine respiratory viruses: equid alphaherpesviruses 1 and 4 (EHV-1, -4) and equine influenza virus (EIV; species Influenza A virus). The primers and probes amplified only the targeted viruses, and there were no inter-assay cross-amplifications or nonspecific interactions. The multiplex assay efficiencies were 92.5%, 97%, and 90% for EHV-1, EHV-4, and EIV, respectively. The R values of the monoplex and multiplex assays were ⩾0.990, and the slopes were -3.37 to -3.59. The p...
Reliability of equine visual lameness classification as a function of expertise, lameness severity and rater confidence.
The Veterinary record    September 21, 2018   Volume 184, Issue 2 63 doi: 10.1136/vr.105058
Starke SD, Oosterlinck M.Visual equine lameness assessment is often unreliable, yet the full understanding of this issue is missing. Here, we investigate visual lameness assessment using near-realistic, three-dimensional horse animations presenting with 0-60 per cent movement asymmetry. Animations were scored at an equine veterinary seminar by attendees with various expertise levels. Results showed that years of experience and exposure to a low, medium or high case load had no significant effect on correct assessment of lame (P>0.149) or sound horses (P≥0.412), with the exception of a significant effect of case l...

Journal of equine science    September 19, 2018   Volume 29, Issue 3 79-85 doi: 10.1294/jes.29.79
Nomura M, Mizobe F, Kato T, Kuroda T, Urayama S, Muranaka M.Although severe blood coagulopathy in horses with acute colitis causes multiple organ failure, which may be fatal, few studies have focused on the correlation between the fluctuations of coagulation parameters and severity of colitis. In this study, we evaluated the fluctuations of coagulation parameters in 14 Thoroughbred racehorses with acute colitis for 5 days from the day of hospitalization and compared them between 5 survivors and 9 non-survivors. Noteworthy features in the non-survivors were that antithrombin activity and fibrin degradation products continuously decreased and increased, ...
The magnitude of respiratory sinus arrhythmia of a large mammal (the horse) is like that of humans.
Respiratory physiology & neurobiology    September 18, 2018   Volume 259 170-172 doi: 10.1016/j.resp.2018.09.006
Piccione G, Giudice E, Giannetto C, Mortola JP.Heart rate (FH) accelerates in inspiration and decelerates in expiration, a phenomenon known as Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA). Although the presence of RSA has been documented in many species, how its magnitude compares among species is unknown. We asked whether the magnitude of RSA in a large mammal, the horse, differed from that of previously measured humans. From electrocardiogram and pneumography, the peaks and troughs of FH were identified breath-by-breath in four horses (Italian Saddlebred geldings) during resting wakefulness. RSA was computed as the peak-trough FH difference, in pe...

At days 7, 10 and 13 post-ovulation intrauterine biopsies were collected. Immediately after sampl...
Ultrasound tissue characterisation of the superficial digital flexor tendons in juvenile Thoroughbred racehorses during early race training.
Equine veterinary journal    September 18, 2018   Volume 51, Issue 3 349-355 doi: 10.1111/evj.13006
Plevin S, McLellan J, van Schie H, Parkin T.Injuries to the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) are one of the leading causes of Thoroughbred (TB) wastage. Increasingly, the aim is to prevent injury rather than treat it. Conventional ultrasonography is not sufficiently sensitive to accurately monitor tendon and predict injury. Ultrasound tissue characterisation (UTC) is a relatively new technique, which improves tendon characterisation by providing a 3-dimensional (3D) SDFT reconstruction and objective calculation of fibre alignment by classifying fibres into one of 4 echo-types. Objective: To report a reference range of echo-types...
Utility of C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A in the diagnosis of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    September 14, 2018   Volume 32, Issue 5 1726-1730 doi: 10.1111/jvim.15254
Mittelman NS, Stefanovski D, Johnson AL.Accurate antemortem EPM diagnosis requires evidence of intrathecal antibody production. Some advocate the use of acute phase proteins in addition to serology, which alone results in substantial false positives. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if serum C-reactive protein (CRP) or serum amyloid A (SAA) concentrations were elevated in cases of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) compared to other neurological diseases. Methods: 25 clinical cases of equine neurological disease: EPM (10), cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (CVSM) (10), neuroborreliosis (2), equine mot...

The Journal of veterinary medical science    September 14, 2018   Volume 80, Issue 11 1650-1656 doi: 10.1292/jvms.18-0207
Murakami S, Kobayashi T, Sekigawa Y, Torii Y, Kanesaki Y, Ishige T, Yokoyama E, Ishiwata H, Hamada M, Tamura T.The name "Actinomyces suis" was applied to each actinomycete isolate from swine actinomycosis by Grässer in 1962 and Franke in 1973. Nevertheless, this specific species was not included in the "Approved List of Bacterial Name" due to absence of the type cultures. Therefore, "Actinomyces suis" based on the description of Franke 1973 has been considered as "species incertae sedis". We isolated a number of Actinomyces strains from swine. The representative strains of them was designated as Chiba 101 that was closely similar to the description in "Actinomyces suis" reported by Franke in 1973. Int...

Analytical biochemistry    September 12, 2018   Volume 561-562 27-31 doi: 10.1016/j.ab.2018.09.010
De-Simone SG, Nascimento HJ, Prado IC, Aguiar AS, Melgarejo AR, Pina JLS, Ferreira PF, Provance DW.The availability of purified antibodies is a prerequisite for many applications and the appropriate choice(s) for antibody-purification is crucial. Numerous methods have been developed for the purification of antibodies from different sources with affinity chromatography-based methods being the most extensively utilized. These methods are based on high specificity, easy reversibility and biological interactions between two molecules (e.g., between receptor and ligand or antibody and antigen). However, no simple techniques have yet been described to characterize and purify subclasses of immunog...

The prevalence of piroplasm infection was 33.5% (95% CI; 27.4-39.9). T. equi was the most c...
Seminal plasma does not aid in the transport of phenolsulfonphthalein across the uterotubal junction in mares.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    September 11, 2018   Volume 59, Issue 9 988-992
Ross KA, Kolb DS, Macedo A, Anderson M, Klein C.This study tested the hypothesis that the presence of prostaglandin E2 in seminal plasma would aid in the transport of phenolsulfonphthalein (PSP) across the uterotubal junction. Five mares in estrus were inseminated during estrus with PSP dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline and during the subsequent estrus with PSP added to a standard insemination dose. Serum and urine samples were obtained at hours 0, 1, 2, and 3 following treatment and examined for the presence of PSP. Phenolsulfonphthalein could not be detected in any of the urine samples collected from mares following either treatment....
