Changes due to age in the kinematics of trotting Andalusian foals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of growth on biokinematic characteristics at the trot in a group of 9 Andalusian foals from age 12 to 36 months in order to identify which stride variables change or remain invariable. The relationships were explored between measurements of bone quality, size (quantity) and shape, and strain data collected during treadmill exercise at 4 and 12 m/s from the third metacarpal bones of 6 yearling and 6 mature Thoroughbred racehorses. Chromosome homologies between man and mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae) and description of a new ancestral synteny involving sequences homologous to human chromosomes 4 and 8. Physical anchorage and orientation of equine linkage groups by FISH mapping BAC clones containing microsatellite markers. A horse bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library was screened for 19 microsatellite markers from unassigned or non-oriented linkage groups. Clones containing 11 (AHT20, EB2E8, HMS45, LEX005, LEX014, LEX023, LEX044, TKY111, UCDEQ425, UCDEQ464 and VIASH21) of these were found, which were from eight different linkage groups. The BAC clones were used as probes in dual colour FISH to identify their precise chromosomal origin. Study of the behaviour, digestive efficiency and gut transit times of crib-biting horses. The spontaneous behaviour and the apparent digestibility of dry matter and fibre and transit times of digesta were compared in four normal horses and four crib-biters. A technique was developed for measuring total gut transit times (TGTT) by using single-stool analysis of the passage of radio-opaque polyethylene markers. Longer TGTT were recorded in the crib-biters than in the normal horses but the orocaecal transit times did not differ. The crib-biters rested less than the normal horses.
