Topic:Histology

Histology in horses involves the microscopic examination of tissues to understand their structure and function. This field of study provides insights into the cellular composition and architecture of equine tissues, aiding in the diagnosis of diseases and the assessment of tissue health. Histological analysis is used to identify pathological changes, such as inflammation, neoplasia, or degenerative conditions, by examining tissue samples obtained through biopsies or necropsies. Common tissues studied in equine histology include skin, muscle, bone, and internal organs. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore histological techniques, findings, and their applications in equine veterinary medicine.
Besnoitiosis in a horse.
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association    June 1, 1993   Volume 64, Issue 2 92-95
van Heerden J, Els HJ, Raubenheimer EJ, Williams JH.Besnoitiosis was confirmed in a pony which presented with inspiratory dyspnoea, scleroderma and ventral oedema. Numerous cysts were visible in the sclerae. Histological examination of the skin confirmed the presence of numerous cysts. The parasite could not be transmitted by subcutaneous injection of homogenised skin from the infected horse to rabbits and a horse. Ultrastructural morphology of the crescent-shaped bradyzoites was not compatable with Besnoitia besnoiti or B. jellisoni and it is proposed that the infection was caused by B. bennetti.
[A horse with grass sickness].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    June 1, 1993   Volume 118, Issue 11 365-366
Leendertse IP.A three year old warm-blood gelding with severe colic was referred to a veterinary clinic. The history revealed that the horse was found early in the morning with severe colic, and laying in the pasture. On arrival the clinical examination showed a complete wet horse with a pulse rate of 92/min, a respiratory rate of 24/min., a pcv of 0.50 L.L.-1, a T. of 38.0 degrees C, and no gastric reflux. Rectal examination revealed a sticky rectal mucous membrane and a colonic impaction together with displacement of the large colon. A diagnostic laparotomy showed an impaction as is seen in horses with Gr...

Clinical signs included difficulty eating hay, and a large, intraoral soft tissue mass measuring 13 x 8 x 4.5 cm. The mass was located in the mucosa on the lingual aspect of the caudal left portion of the mandible, ventral to the base of the tongue, and covered the second and third lower molars, extending rostrally along the buccal mucosa to the premolars. The left maxillary second and third molars were overgrown with sharp edges. Lateral radiography of the mandible revealed abse...
Mechanical implications of collagen fibre orientation in cortical bone of the equine radius.
Anatomy and embryology    March 1, 1993   Volume 187, Issue 3 239-248 doi: 10.1007/BF00195761
Riggs CM, Vaughan LC, Evans GP, Lanyon LE, Boyde A.Mechanical test specimens were prepared from the cranial and caudal cortices of radii from eight horses. These were subjected to destructive tests in either tension or compression. The ultimate stress, elastic modulus and energy absorbed to failure were calculated in either mode of loading. Analysis was performed on the specimens following mechanical testing to determine their density, mineral content, mineral density distribution and histological type. A novel technique was applied to sections from each specimen to quantify the predominant collagen fibre orientation of the bone near the plane...

Patnaik AK.In a retrospective study, granular cell tumors in six dogs (Nos. 1-6), three cats (Nos. 1-3), one horse (No. 1), and one cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) (No. 1) and a meningioma with a granular cell component in one dog (No. 7) were examined histologically and immunohistochemically. These tumors were identified by histologic examination of surgical biopsy specimens, except in the horse, in which the tumor was an incidental finding at necropsy. These diagnoses were initially made by more than one pathologist. Five of the six granular cell tumors in the dogs were in the oral cavity; one of the...
Pathological lesions associated with Anoplocephala perfoliata at the ileo-caecal junction of horses.
The Veterinary record    February 20, 1993   Volume 132, Issue 8 179-182 doi: 10.1136/vr.132.8.179
Pearson GR, Davies LW, White AL, O'Brien JK.The intestinal tracts of 20 horses, killed at a local abattoir and of unknown age, sex and previous clinical history were examined for the presence of Anoplocephala perfoliata attached to the ileo-caecal junction. Four horses had no tape-worms, nine had one to 20 tapeworms attached to the mucosa and seven had more than 100 attached to the mucosa. The histological changes of thickening, ulceration and eosinophil infiltration of the mucosa at the ileo-caecal junction were more severe when more than 100 parasites were present.

Infiltrative lipoma in a quarter horse.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1993   Volume 83, Issue 1 57-60
Lepage OM, Laverty S, Drolet R, Lavoie JP.A case of infiltrative lipoma in the left flank of a yearling Quarter Horse is described. Rectal palpation, percutaneous ultrasonographic examination, the marbled appearance and poor delineation from surrounding tissues strongly suggested an infiltrative lipoma. This was confirmed by histological examination. Infiltrative lipomas should be included in the differential diagnosis of soft masses located in equine muscle.
Intraosseous pressure and pathologic changes in horses with navicular disease.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 1 7-12
Pleasant RS, Baker GJ, Foreman JH, Eurell JA, Losonsky JM.Navicular bone intraosseous pressure, gross pathologic, histologic, and histochemical data were collected from 8 horses with navicular disease and 4 control horses. Simultaneous navicular bone intraosseous, medial palmar arterial, and saphenous venous pressures were measured for the left and right forelimbs of each horse under general anesthesia. Gross pathologic evaluation included grading of changes on the flexor surface of the navicular bone. Safranin-O-fast green-stained sections were used for histologic-histochemical grading of the hyaline articular and fibrocartilage surfaces of the navi...

Journal of comparative pathology    October 1, 1992   Volume 107, Issue 3 271-283 doi: 10.1016/0021-9975(92)90003-d
Pogson DM, Doxey DL, Gilmour JS, Milne EM, Chisholm HK.Histological investigations were undertaken on four sympathetic autonomic ganglia and on the myenteric and sub-mucosal plexuses of the jejunum in healthy animals, in naturally occurring cases of acute, sub-acute and chronic equine dysautonomia and in ponies in which neuronal damage had been induced by the injection of acute grass sickness sera. The degree of neuronal damage is related to the type of dysautonomia. The coeliac-mesenteric ganglion reacts differently from other ganglia and is less severely damaged in cases of short duration. Extensive experimentally induced damage to the coeliac-m...
[A lectin histochemical study of the epidermis off the skin and the hoof of horses].
Anatomia, histologia, embryologia    September 1, 1992   Volume 21, Issue 3 238-245 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0264.1992.tb00456.x
Hashimoto Y, Reese S, Bragulla H, Budras KD.Carbohydrate moieties of cell membranes in the epidermis of equine skin and hoof were investigated using lectin-histochemistry. The loss of desmosomes during keratinization leads to a reduced lectin affinity. Lectin binding capacity of the intercellular matrix in the stratum corneum of the epidermis is weak compared to that of the intercellular kitt of the hoof. Qualitative differences in lectin binding of the intercellular kitt of different hoof segments correlate with the quality of the horn in the respective areas.

All GCTs were characterized by their PAS positive cytoplasmic granules in light microscopy, which in electron microscopy appeared as lysosome-like granules. In each case two canine GCTs were stained by the antibody against cytok...
Intestinal fibrosis with partial obstruction in five horses and two ponies.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 15, 1992   Volume 201, Issue 4 603-607
Traub-Dargatz JL, Schultheiss PC, Kiper ML, Stashak TS, Wrigley R, Schlipf J, Applehans FM.Fibrosis of the small intestine led to recurrent colic and weight loss in 2 ponies and 5 horses. There was a reduction in the length of the small intestine to one-half normal in horses 4 to 7. Histologic examination revealed substantial small intestinal submucosal fibrosis and arteriole sclerosis. The cause was not determined, but an environmental factor was suspected because 3 horses were from the same farm and the other animals were from within a 10-mile radius of the farm. The submucosal fibrosis appeared to be secondary to sclerosis of arterioles in the submucosa and mesentery, with low bl...
Plasma concentrations of 13,14-dihydro-15-ketoprostaglandin F2 alpha in mares during uterine involution.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 1, 1992   Volume 201, Issue 3 434-437
Sertich PL, Watson ED.Twelve mares were allowed to foal naturally, after which they were monitored to study uterine involution. Starting on day 3 after parturition, the internal genital tract was examined per rectum manually and ultrasonographically every other day for changes in uterine characteristics and ovarian activity. By day 5, gravid and nongravid uterine horns were similar in size, and by day 7, uterine fluid was absent. On day 7 after parturition, endometrial biopsy samples were obtained for histologic evaluation, and uterine swab specimens were obtained for microbiologic culture. Uterine swab specimens f...
Resection and anastomosis for treatment of strangulating volvulus of the large colon of horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 1, 1992   Volume 201, Issue 3 454-457
Rose PL, Bradley WM.Strangulating volvulus of the large colon was treated by resection and anastomosis of the colon in 9 horses. Tissue specimens were obtained at the site of the resection for histologic evaluation. An attempt was made to correlate the appearance of the colon at the time of surgery to the histologic evaluation and the eventual outcome. Six of the 9 horses (66%) survived. This is in contrast to a reported survival of 34.7 to 36% after decompression and reduction of colonic volvulus. Survival after surgery could not be predicted on the basis of visual assessment or histologic examination.
