Topic:Horse Breeds

Horse breeds represent the diverse genetic and phenotypic variations found within the species Equus ferus caballus. These breeds are categorized based on characteristics such as size, conformation, coat color, and temperament, which have been selectively bred over centuries to fulfill specific roles and functions. Common classifications of horse breeds include light horses, draft horses, and ponies, each serving different purposes ranging from riding and racing to work and companionship. This page aggregates peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the genetics, history, and functional attributes of various horse breeds, as well as their impact on equine management and breeding practices.

The Journal of veterinary medical science    March 9, 2020   Volume 82, Issue 4 503-540 doi: 10.1292/jvms.19-0535
Nakamura M, Tozaki T, Kakoi H, Nakamura K, Rajabi-Toustani R, Ohba Y, Matsubara T, Takasu M.The Kiso horse is native to Japan and is on the verge of extinction. Here, we used microsatellites to characterize changes in their genetic diversity over time. We divided a population of Kiso horses that genotyped during 2007-2017 into three groups based on birth year: Group 1, 1980-1998 (70 horses); Group 2, 1999-2007 (61 horses); and Group 3, 2008-2017 (42 horses). We genotyped 31 microsatellites to calculate average number of alleles, observed heterozygosity, and expected heterozygosity. All indicators decreased across age groups. The results indicate that Kiso horses have been experiencin...
Age-Dependent Effect of Foal Heat Breeding on Pregnancy and Embryo Mortality Rates in Thoroughbred Mares.
Journal of equine veterinary science    March 5, 2020   Volume 90 102982 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2020.102982
Souza JRM, Gonçalves PBD, Bertolin K, Ferreira R, Ribeiro ASS, Ribeiro DB, Rechsteiner SMDEF, Araújo RR, Pimentel CA, Pimentel AMH.The aim of the present study was to evaluate the correlation of age and heat cycle to determine reproductive efficiency in young and aged Thoroughbred mares bred on foal heat (FH) or on second heat (SH) after foaling. Embryo mortality (EmbM) was determined every time a mare was found open after a positive pregnancy diagnosis. Parturition to breeding interval, pregnancy rate (PregR) and EmbM rate were the dependent variables and the treatments were breeding on the FH or on SH. The cutoff age to obtain above-average probability for the EmbM was 10 years old. PregR in mares bred on FH was lower ...
Reported Behavioural Differences between Geldings and Mares Challenge Sex-Driven Stereotypes in Ridden Equine Behaviour.
Animals : an open access journal from MDPI    March 2, 2020   Volume 10, Issue 3 414 doi: 10.3390/ani10030414
Aune A, Fenner K, Wilson B, Cameron E, McLean A, McGreevy P.Horse trainers and riders may have preconceived ideas of horse temperament based solely on the sex of the horse. A study (n = 1233) of horse enthusiasts (75% of whom had more than 8 years of riding experience) revealed that riders prefer geldings over mares and stallions. While these data may reflect different sex preferences in horses used for sport, they may also reduce the chances of some horses reaching their performance potential. Further, an unfounded sex prejudice is likely to contribute to unconscious bias when perceiving unwanted behaviours, simplistically attributing them to demograp...

Animals : an open access journal from MDPI    February 21, 2020   Volume 10, Issue 2 doi: 10.3390/ani10020338
Han H, Chen Q, Gao Y, Li J, Li W, Dang R, Lei C.In the biological process of testicular spermatogenesis, the expression and interaction of many genes are regulated by microRNAs (miRNAs). However, comparisons of miRNA expression between descended testes (DTs) and undescended testes (UDTs) are rarely done in horses. In this study, we selected two UDTs (CKY2b and GU4b) from Chakouyi (CKY) and Guanzhong (GU) horses and eight DTs (GU1-3, CKY1, CKY3, CKY2a, GU4a, and GU5). Three groups were compared to evaluate expression patterns of testicular miRNA in stallion testes. Group 1 compared normal CKY horses and GU horses (CKY1 and CKY3 vs. GU1-3). G...

Journal of equine veterinary science    February 13, 2020   Volume 88 102964 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2020.102964
de Albuquerque Lagares M, Silva GCD, Cortes SF, Luz SB, de Resende AC, Alves NC, Wenceslau RR, Stahlberg R.During semen cryopreservation, the sensitivity of equine sperm to oxidative stress is increased by the eliminated seminal plasma. Thus, antioxidant addition to the semen extender can be helpful to the sperm survival after freezing and thawing. This work aimed to test whether coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) added in different concentrations to the INRA 82 freezing extender has antioxidant function on equine sperm to improve its fertilizing ability. Semen samples from five stallions were frozen with the extenders: (T1) INRA 82, control, (T2) T1+ 5 μM CoQ10, (T3) T1+ 25 μM CoQ10, and (T4) T1+ 50 μM Co...
Multi-kingdom characterization of the core equine fecal microbiota based on multiple equine (sub)species.
Animal microbiome    February 12, 2020   Volume 2, Issue 1 6 doi: 10.1186/s42523-020-0023-1
Edwards JE, Shetty SA, van den Berg P, Burden F, van Doorn DA, Pellikaan WF, Dijkstra J, Smidt H.Equine gut microbiology studies to date have primarily focused on horses and ponies, which represent only one of the eight extant equine species. This is despite asses and mules comprising almost half of the world's domesticated equines, and donkeys being superior to horses/ponies in their ability to degrade dietary fiber. Limited attention has also been given to commensal anaerobic fungi and archaea even though anaerobic fungi are potent fiber degrading organisms, the activity of which is enhanced by methanogenic archaea. Therefore, the objective of this study was to broaden the current knowl...

PloS one    February 12, 2020   Volume 15, Issue 2 e0227212 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0227212
Han H, McGivney BA, Farries G, Katz LM, MacHugh DE, Randhawa IAS, Hill EW.Thoroughbred horse racing is a global sport with major hubs in Europe, North America, Australasia and Japan. Regional preferences for certain traits have resulted in phenotypic variation that may result from adaptation to the local racing ecosystem. Here, we test the hypothesis that genes selected for regional phenotypic variation may be identified by analysis of selection signatures in pan-genomic SNP genotype data. Comparing Australian to non-Australian Thoroughbred horses (n = 99), the most highly differentiated loci in a composite selection signals (CSS) analysis were on ECA6 (34.75-34.85 ...

Journal of equine veterinary science    February 5, 2020   Volume 88 102950 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2020.102950
Grilz-Seger G, Reiter S, Neuditschko M, Wallner B, Rieder S, Leeb T, Jagannathan V, Mesarič M, Cotman M, Pausch H, Lindgren G, Velie B, Horna M....The roan coat color in horses is characterized by dispersed white hair and dark points. This phenotype segregates in a broad range of horse breeds, while the underlying genetic background is still unknown. Previous studies mapped the roan locus to the KIT gene on equine chromosome 3 (ECA3). However, this association could not be validated across different horse breeds. Performing a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) in Noriker horses, we identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (ECA3:g.79,543.439 A > G) in the intron 17 of the KIT gene. The G -allele of the top associated SNP...
Upregulation of CRISP-3 and kallikrein in stallion seminal plasma is associated with poor tolerance of cooled storage.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    February 3, 2020   Volume 55, Issue 4 496-502 doi: 10.1111/rda.13643
Kareskoski AM, Palviainen M, Johannisson A, Katila T.For unknown reasons, stallion fertility and sperm longevity during cooled storage of semen vary markedly between individuals. Spermatozoa from individual stallions react differently to the presence, or the removal, of seminal plasma (SP). The aim was to evaluate differences in protein content in stallion seminal plasma with either a positive or a negative effect on sperm chromatin integrity during storage. Stallion semen samples from different ejaculate fractions were stored at 5°C for 24 hr. Sperm survival was assessed after storage using a sperm chromatin structure assay. Protein expressio...

Liu S, Jiang S, Dong XG, Cui R, Ling Y, Zhao C.The Debao pony is a well-known dwarf horse breed in China. High-mobility group AT-hook 2 (HMGA2) gene is regarded as one of the important candidate genes regulating body height in horses. The aim of this study was to study the association between mutations in HMGA2 gene and withers height in Debao ponies. The polymorphisms in all exons and partial introns of the HMGA2 gene were screened with sequencing across 180 Debao ponies. And the association between the DNA variants and withers height was analyzed. Seven genetic variants were identified in HMGA2 gene, including six novel variants. Among t...
Trimming and Re-shoeing Results in More Steps per Day and More Time Spent Lying per Day.
Journal of equine veterinary science    February 1, 2020   Volume 88 102947 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2020.102947
Daniel JA, Groux R, Wilson JA, Krawczel PD, Lee AR, Whitlock BK.To examine the impact of trimming and re-shoeing on behavior, light horse geldings (3-21 year-old Quarter Horse, Dutch Warmblood, or Thoroughbred) were fitted with three-axis accelerometers (IceTag, Ice Robotics, Edinburgh, Scotland) on the left rear limb. Boots were placed under the accelerometer, and both were removed daily for approximately 1 hour while horses were stalled for morning feeding to examine the horses' limb. After a two-day adaptation period and five days of activity tracking, horses were treated by having shoes removed, feet trimmed, and new shoes fitted (re-shod; n = 3) or ...
Genetic diversity within and between British and Irish breeds: The maternal and paternal history of native ponies.
Ecology and evolution    January 27, 2020   Volume 10, Issue 3 1352-1367 doi: 10.1002/ece3.5989
Winton CL, McMahon R, Hegarty MJ, McEwan NR, Davies-Morel MCG, Morgan C, Nash DM.The UK and Ireland have many native pony breeds with historical and cultural importance as well as being a source of uncharacterized genetic diversity. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research investigating their genetic diversity and phylogenetic interrelationships. Many studies contain a limited number of pony breeds or small sample sizes for these breeds. This may result in erroneous grouping of pony breeds that otherwise have intricate interrelationships with each other and are not evaluated correctly when placed as a token subset of a larger dataset. This is the first study that...
Birth of first foals through embryo transfer after artificial insemination using frozen semen in Japan.
The Journal of reproduction and development    January 26, 2020   Volume 66, Issue 2 193-197 doi: 10.1262/jrd.2019-117
Hannan MA, Haneda S, Murata K, Takeuchi S, Cheong SH, Nambo Y.Until now, there have been no reports of foals born through embryo transfer after artificial insemination using frozen semen in Japan. The aims of this study were to develop a riding crossbred horse and evaluate the prospects of embryo transfer technology in multiplying horse population. In both donor and recipient mares, luteolysis was induced by the administration of 0.1 mg Cloprostenol to synchronize the onset of estrus, and ovulation was induced by administering 2000 IU human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or 0.75 mg Deslorelin. Frozen semen from an Irish Connemara pony stallion was used to ...
Reactive oxygen species are involved in the signaling of equine sperm chemotaxis.
Reproduction (Cambridge, England)    January 23, 2020   Volume 159, Issue 4 423-436 doi: 10.1530/REP-19-0480
Moreno-Irusta A, Dominguez EM, Marín-Briggiler CI, Matamoros-Volante A, Lucchesi O, Tomes CN, Treviño CL, Buffone MG, Lascano R, Losinno L....Sperm chemotaxis may facilitate the finding of the oocyte. Only capacitated spermatozoa can orient their movement by chemotaxis, which as well as capacitation, is regulated in part by the cAMP-PKA pathway. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced during sperm capacitation which is closely related to chemotaxis. Then, the ROS participation in the chemotactic signaling can be expected. Here we studied the role of ROS in the chemotaxis signaling of equine spermatozoa which produce high quantities of ROS because of their energy metabolism. The level of capacitated and chemotactic spermatozoa was...
Inhibition of Na+, K+ -ATPase with ouabain is detrimental to equine blastocysts.
Animal reproduction    January 22, 2020   Volume 17, Issue 1 e20190079 doi: 10.21451/1984-3143-AR2019-0079
do Nascimento AD, Marques JCC, Cezar ARR, Batista AM, Kastelic JP, Câmara DR.Although equine blastocysts ≤ 300 µm in diameter can be successfully vitrified, larger equine blastocysts are not good candidates for cryopreservation. As Na, K-ATPase is involved in maintaining blastocyst expansion, perhaps inhibition of this enzyme would be a viable method of reducing blastocyst diameter prior to cryopreservation. Objectives were to evaluate effects of ouabain-induced inhibition of Na, K-ATPase in equine blastocysts. Sixteen mares were ultrasonographically monitored, given deslorelin acetate to induce ovulation, and inseminated. Embryos (D7 and D9) were harvested and Na, ...
Mitochondrial Profiles of the East Bulgarian and the Pleven Horse Breeds.
Journal of equine veterinary science    January 22, 2020   Volume 88 102933 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2020.102933
Hristov P, Yordanov G, Vladov V, Neov B, Palova N, Radoslavov G.It is well known that horse breeding in Bulgaria is a cultural heritage in Bulgaria, dating from prehistoric and historic times. Until now, molecular data on Bulgarian horses from the plain regions of the country were not available. Therefore, for the first time, we have collected genetic information about some modern horse breeds from the plain regions in Bulgaria. A total of 50 horses originating from different families from two different breeds were investigated: the first one was the Pleven horse (n = 11, breeding in the Danubian Plain), and the second one was the East Bulgarian horse bre...

Genomic inbreeding trends, influential sire lines and selection in the global Thoroughbred horse population.
Scientific reports    January 16, 2020   Volume 10, Issue 1 466 doi: 10.1038/s41598-019-57389-5
McGivney BA, Han H, Corduff LR, Katz LM, Tozaki T, MacHugh DE, Hill EW.The Thoroughbred horse is a highly valued domestic animal population under strong selection for athletic phenotypes. Here we present a high resolution genomics-based analysis of inbreeding in the population that may form the basis for evidence-based discussion amid concerns in the breeding industry over the increasing use of small numbers of popular sire lines, which may accelerate a loss of genetic diversity. In the most comprehensive globally representative sample of Thoroughbreds to-date (n = 10,118), including prominent stallions (n = 305) from the major bloodstock regions of the w...
Identification of Novel lncRNAs Differentially Expressed in Placentas of Chinese Ningqiang Pony and Yili Horse Breeds.
Animals : an open access journal from MDPI    January 11, 2020   Volume 10, Issue 1 119 doi: 10.3390/ani10010119
Pu Y, Zhang Y, Zhang T, Han J, Ma Y, Liu X.As a nutrient sensor, the placenta plays a key role in regulating fetus growth and development. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to regulate growth-related traits. However, the biological function of lncRNAs in horse placentas remains unclear. To compare the expression patterns of lncRNAs in the placentas of the Chinese Ningqiang (NQ) and Yili (YL) breeds, we performed a transcriptome analysis using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) technology. NQ is a pony breed with an average adult height at the withers of less than 106 cm, whereas that of YL is around 148 cm. Based on 813 million high...
Whole-genome sequence analysis reveals candidate genomic footprints and genes associated with reproductive traits in Thoroughbred horse.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    January 10, 2020   Volume 55, Issue 2 200-208 doi: 10.1111/rda.13608
Asadollahpour Nanaei H, Ayatollahi Mehrgardi A, Esmailizadeh A.The primary objective of most horse breeding operations was to maximize reproductive efficiency and minimize the cost of producing live foals. Here, we compared individual horses from the Thoroughbred population (n = 17), known as a horse breed with poor reproductive performance, with other six horse populations (n = 28), to detect genomic signatures of positive selection underlying of reproductive traits. A number of protein-coding genes with significant (p-value <.01) higher F values (616 genes) and a lower value for nucleotide diversity (π) (310 genes) were identified. The results o...
Maternal Recognition of Pregnancy in the Horse: Are MicroRNAs the Secret Messengers?
International journal of molecular sciences    January 9, 2020   Volume 21, Issue 2 419 doi: 10.3390/ijms21020419
Smits K, Gansemans Y, Tilleman L, Van Nieuwerburgh F, Van De Velde M, Gerits I, Ververs C, Roels K, Govaere J, Peelman L, Deforce D, Van Soom A.The signal for maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) has still not been identified in the horse. High-throughput molecular biology at the embryo-maternal interface has substantially contributed to the knowledge on pathways affected during MRP, but an integrated study in which proteomics, transcriptomics and miRNA expression can be linked directly is currently lacking. The aim of this study was to provide such analysis. Endometrial biopsies, uterine fluid, embryonic tissues, and yolk sac fluid were collected 13 days after ovulation during pregnant and control cycles from the same mares. Micro...
Single-Layer Colloid Centrifugation as a Method to Process Urine-Contaminated Stallion Semen After Freezing-Thawing.
Journal of equine veterinary science    January 7, 2020   Volume 87 102910 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2020.102910
Podico G, Ellerbrock RE, Curcio BR, Cheong SH, Lima FS, Canisso IF.Urospermia is a major ejaculatory dysfunction affecting stallions. It has been thought that urine-contaminated semen should not be cryopreserved; however, on select cases, urine contamination of semen cannot be avoided. A recent study suggested that urospermic semen can be cryopreserved after cushion centrifugation and extension. Thus, this study aimed to assess the use of single-layer colloid centrifugation (SLC) to process frozen-thawed urine-contaminated stallion semen. Raw ejaculates (n = 55) from eight stallions were split into three groups: no urine, low (20%), or high (50%) urine conta...

Molecular and cellular probes    January 7, 2020   Volume 50 101506 doi: 10.1016/j.mcp.2019.101506
Ayala-Valdovinos MA, Galindo-García J, Sánchez-Chiprés D, Duifhuis-Rivera T, Anguiano-Estrella R.The 'Gait keeper' mutation in the DMRT3 gene alters locomotion and gait patterns in horses. This mutation (C>A) has been found in all gaited breeds of horses analyzed but is absent in most non-gaited breeds. We developed a new mutagenically separated polymerase chain reaction (MS-PCR) based method for simple detection of horse DMRT3 genotype. Our method was applied in a preliminary study to determine DMRT3 allele frequencies in 78 Azteca horses (AZ) and 53 Costa Rican Saddle Horses (CRSH). We found a wild-type C allele frequency of 100% in the AZ horses. For the CRSH, the wild-type C freque...
