The immune system in horses is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body from pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This system includes both innate and adaptive immune responses, which function to identify and eliminate foreign invaders. The innate immune response provides an immediate, non-specific defense, while the adaptive immune response involves a more targeted and long-lasting protection through the production of antibodies. Key components of the equine immune system include white blood cells, such as lymphocytes and macrophages, as well as various signaling molecules like cytokines. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the structure, function, and regulation of the immune system in horses, with an emphasis on understanding its role in maintaining equine health and its response to diseases.
Swiderski CE.Hypersensitivity is an exaggerated immunologic response to a foreign agent that results in inflammation and organ dysfunction. Hypersensitivity disorders are broadly divided into antibody-mediated and T-cell-mediated reactions. The inflammatory pathways that result in disease are initiated in an antigen-specific manner through Fab portions of antibodies or the T-cell receptor, causing the up-regulation of effector mechanisms designed to clear the offending agent. Effector mechanisms include the generation of inflammatory chemicals such as cytokines and chemokines and the attraction of leukocyt...
Sellon DC.FPT of immunoglobulin in foals is the commonest form of acquired immunodeficiency in horses. FPT predisposes foals to bacterial infections and septicemia and easily is preventable and treatable if breeding farms and veterinarians are attentive to optimum foaling management practices. Other forms of acquired immunodeficiencies are uncommon in horses, although immune function may be transiently suppressed by a wide variety of drugs, infections, or other conditions. As immunologic testing becomes more sophisticated and more readily available to equine practitioners, acquired immunodeficiencies ar...
Horohov DW.The ultimate reason for better characterizing the immune response to infectious agents is the hope that this knowledge may lead to the development of better preventative or therapeutic measures. As more information becomes available, it becomes possible to incorporate these findings into the design of better vaccines and treatments. Likewise, attempts to either enhance or suppress specific helper T-cell responses may be required to control immunopathologic reactions. Although cytokine intervention in the clinical setting remains theoretic at this time, future manipulation based on the TH1/TH2 ...
MacKay RJ.After inflammation is initiated by detection of antigen, plasma components and activated leukocytes are concentrated at the inflammatory site. Cellular and chemical effectors of inflammation are focused on the offending antigen, usually resulting in its destruction and elimination. Activation of endogenous counter-regulatory systems damps down the inflammatory process and is the first stage of repair. In addition to local effects, the inflammatory focus may initiate a continuum of systemic acute phase responses ranging from the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) to generalized immu...
Slater J, Hannant D.The identification of some of the adaptive immune responses to infection with equine viruses has been the first step toward rational immunoprophylactic design. Sufficient knowledge of infection-induced immunity and informed estimates of the requirements for long-term immunity for EIV have now been obtained. Thus, the future for inactivated EIV vaccines is promising now that new adjuvants have been applied to induce cellular immunity and safe methods have been designed to stimulate virus-neutralizing (VN) antibody at mucosal surfaces. Adenoviruses induce circulating VN antibody, the presence of...
Sellon DC, Spaulding K, Breuhaus BA, Katz L, Mealey R.Hepatic abscesses were diagnosed in 3 adult horses. Two were < 4 years old and had evidence of concurrent immune-mediated conditions, including aseptic arthritis, immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, and immune-mediated anemia. Predisposing factors for hepatic abscess formation in these horses included prior abdominal surgery, proximal duodenitis/jejunitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and a penetrating foreign body in the large colon. Serum hepatic enzyme activities were within or slightly greater then reference limits in all 3 horses. The most pronounced and consistent abnormalities on CBC an...
Flaminio MJ, Rush BR, Davis EG, Hennessy K, Shuman W, Wilkerson MJ.Studies in infants and foals indicate an age-dependent maturation of peripheral lymphocyte subsets. The age-dependent relationship for maturation of cellular immune responses, such as phagocytosis and lymphocyte responses of the peripheral and pulmonary-derived leukocytes, has not been characterized in foals. Lymphocyte subpopulations, mitogen stimulation response of lymphocytes, lymphokine-activated killing cell activity, phagocytosis and oxidative burst activity, and serum immunoglobulin (Ig) classes G and M concentrations were determined in developing foals. This study illustrates age-depen...
Harrold SM, Cook SJ, Cook RF, Rushlow KE, Issel CJ, Montelaro RC.Equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) infection of horses is characterized by recurring cycles of disease and viremia that typically progress to an inapparent infection in which clinical symptoms are absent as host immune responses maintain control of virus replication indefinitely. The dynamics of EIAV viremia and its association with disease cycles have been well characterized, but there has been to date no comprehensive quantitative analyses of the specific tissue sites of EIAV infection and replication in experimentally infected equids during acute disease episodes and during asymptomatic ...
Lawler DF, Hopkins J, Watson ED.Recent evidence indicates that the cells of the immune system and their large network of secretory products, or cytokines, play an active role in the ovary throughout the oestrous cycle. In the present study, immune cell populations (T and B lymphocytes, macrophages, granulocytes and eosinophils) and expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II were investigated in corpora lutea from mares in early (days 2-4), mid- (days 7-10) and late (days 12-14) dioestrus, the post-luteolytic phase (days 16-17) and early pregnancy. The number of T lymphocytes within the corpus luteum increa...
Newton JR, Townsend HG, Wood JL, Sinclair R, Hannant D, Mumford JA.Field outbreaks of influenza that occurred in vaccinated Thoroughbred racehorses in Newmarket in 1995 and 1996 were investigated by nucleoprotein ELISA and serology. Investigations showed that serum levels of vaccine-induced single radial haemolysis (SRH) antibody correlated closely with protective immunity against equine influenza and were consistent with observations made in previous experimental studies using nebulised aerosol challenge. In the second part of this study, antibody levels stimulated by vaccination were investigated to examine probable protection in high risk groups, such as y...
Hannant D, O'Neill T, Ostlund EN, Kydd JH, Hopkin PJ, Mumford JA.A paresis isolate of equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV1, Ab4/8) and a plaque-purified virus derived from it (EHV1, Ab4/13), induced long-term suppression of both mitogenic and antigen-specific lymphocyte proliferations in adult outbred ponies. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) taken from a pony after EHV1 infection suppressed the in vitro function of normal cells but serum did not. This showed that the observed immune suppression was associated with circulating PBMC and/or their products rather than circulating soluble factors such as antigen or immune complexes. The results suggested that prod...
Sternberg S, Johannisson A, Magnusson U, Jensen-Waern M.After exposure of equine granulocytes from both foals and adult horses to culture supernatants from clinical isolates of Actinobacillus equuli, phagocytic capacity and respiratory burst was examined by flow-cytometry and a chemiluminescence assay, respectively. One haemolytic isolate of an equine Actinobacillus was also included in the study. An average decrease of 22% in total number of granulocytes, in the flow cytometric assay (P < 0.01), and an average decrease of 26% in light emission, in the chemiluminescence assay (P < 0.001), was seen after exposure to bacterial culture supernata...
Idrissi Bougrine S, Fassi Fihri O, el Harrak M, Fassi Fehri MM.A vaccination protocol involving three horses, with five repeated injections of inactivated serotype 4 African horse sickness virus, was undertaken to determine a possible threshold for the appearance of antibodies against the non-structural protein NS3. Using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, with the recombinant NS3 protein as an antigen, the authors detected a response to NS3 as of the second injection for the first horse and after four injections for the second horse. No response to NS3 was detected for the third horse. The results show that the inactivated vaccine is insuffic...
Viveiros MM, Antczak DF.Natural killer (NK) cells are an important component of the innate immune system. Though intensively studied in humans and rodents. NK cells remain less well characterized in other species. Studies are often limited by the lack of specific cell markers; however, the mAb NK-5C6 has been suggested to recognize an evolutionarily conserved molecule on NK cells and reacts with cells from several species. This mAb was used in the current investigation to identify and characterize equine NK cells, and was found to label approximately 10% of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Two-color flow cytometry...
O'Neill T, Kydd JH, Allen GP, Wattrang E, Mumford JA, Hannant D.The frequency of antigen-specific, genetically restricted cytotoxic T lymphocyte precursors (CTLp) was measured in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of ponies before and after infection with equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV1). Split-well limiting dilution analysis (LDA) was developed to measure CTLp frequency using EHV1-infected 51Cr-labelled lymphoblasts as targets. Extensive characterisation showed that recombinant human interleukin-2, autologous antigen presenting cells and equine serum containing virus neutralising antibody were necessary for maturation of CTLp into effector CTL in vitro. ...
Zhang W, Auyong DB, Oaks JL, McGuire TC.Two defined cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) epitopes from equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV)-infected horses, equine leukocyte alloantigen (ELA)-A5.1-restricted epitope 18a, and ELA-A9-restricted epitope 28b-1 were evaluated for conservation among three wild-type EIAV strains. Epitope 18a variation occurred in all three wild-type EIAV strains, while epitope 28b-1 varied in one strain. Further, 12% amino acid changes occurred in the Gag proteins of a recently isolated wild-type strain, documenting a much greater Gag protein variation than previously reported. Evaluation of epitope 18a among two...
Klei TR, Chapman MR.Defining the characteristics of immunity and immune responses to equine cyathostome infections is clearly important to advancing our understanding of the development of these nematodes within the host, the clinical conditions attributed to them, and in developing more rational and novel strategies for their control. Nonetheless, little is currently known on this topic. Current data based on field observations, worm burdens and fecal egg counts suggest that horses acquire a resistance to cyathostome infection with age. This response is slow to develop and incomplete in that most horses regardle...
Anzai T, Timoney JF, Kuwamoto Y, Fujita Y, Wada R, Inoue T.The glossy non-encapsulated strain of Steptococcus equi, NCTC 9682, was compared with the matt strain Hidaka/95/2 which expresses a medium sized capsule and with the mucoid CF32 which expresses a large sized capsule in phagocytosis assays and for virulence in inoculated horses. The three strains, NCTC 9682, Hidaka /95/2 and CF32 produced 2.0, 3.1, and 5.3 mg/g wet cells respectively after 3 h incubation, but similar amounts of M-like proteins, cytotoxin and mitogen. NCTC 9682 showed no resistance to phagocytosis by equine neutrophils regardless of the presence of opsonin while strains Hidaka /...
Hultén C, Tulamo RM, Suominen MM, Burvall K, Marhaug G, Forsberg M.A non-competitive chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay for measuring serum amyloid A (SAA) in equine serum was developed. A polyclonal anti-equine-amyloid A antiserum specific for equine SAA was utilized, and the assay was standardized using highly purified equine SAA. An acute phase horse serum was calibrated against the purified SAA and was used as standard when running the assay. Serum SAA concentrations in the range of 3-1210 mg/l could be measured. The reference range of SAA in clinically healthy adult horses was <7 mg/l. The clinical validation of the assay comprised the SAA responses...
Hedrick PW, Parker KM, Miller EL, Miller PS.The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a fundamental part of the vertebrate immune system, and the high variability in many MHC genes is thought to play an essential role in recognition of parasites. The Przewalski's horse is extinct in the wild and all the living individuals descend from 13 founders, most of whom were captured around the turn of the century. One of the primary genetic concerns in endangered species is whether they have ample adaptive variation to respond to novel selective factors. In examining 14 Przewalski's horses that are broadly representative of the living animal...
Valiev AG, Valieva TA, Valeeva GR, Speranskiĭ VV, Levachev MM.The influence of essential fatty acids of mare's milk fat on the immunocompetent system and nonspecific resistance of male rats weighing 135-145 g was investigated after 6 weeks of feeding. Rats were fed with isocaloric purified diets containing 15% of test fat (in control--combination of lard and sunflower oil) which provide the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids equal to 0.76. An increase of immune responsiveness and nonspecific resistance in the group fed with the diet with mare's milk fat on day 6 after a single immunization of the animals with 5% sheep erythrocyte suspension was noted.
Grulke S, Benbarek H, Caudron I, Deby-Dupont G, Mathy-Hartert M, Farnir F, Deby C, Lamy M, Serteyn D.Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a specific enzyme of neutrophil azurophilic granules with a strong oxidative activity. Thanks to a radioimmunoassay of equine myeloperoxidase, the authors have observed a significantly higher plasma level of MPO in horses operated for strangulation obstruction of the large intestine (n = 6) than in horses suffering from a non-strangulating displacement of the large intestine (n = 9). For the 2 groups, 3 phases were distinguished: reception (P1), intensive care (P2) and terminal phase (P3). The mean peak values of MPO for these phases were 121.6 ng/mL (P1), 168.6 ng/mL ...
Flaminio MJ, Rush BR, Shuman W.Infectious diseases are common in foals aged 1-5 months. The objectives of this investigation were to evaluate immunologic parameters in foals from birth to weaning to establish reference values for the proportion of circulating lymphocytes that were helper (CD4+) or cytotoxic (CD8+) T cells, or B cells; to measure serum immunoglobulin (IgM and IgG) concentrations; and to compare these immunologic parameters to values in foals with naturally occurring Rhodococcus equi pneumonia and in adult horses. Peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations were determined by flow cytometric analysis, and seru...

Methods: Venous blood samples were collected for immunologic assessment before and immediately after exercise at targeted heart rates and after exercise for determination of plasma lactate and cortisol concentrations. Mononuclear cells were assayed for lymphoproliferative responses and incubated with interleukin-2 (IL-2) to induce lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells. Antibodies to equine influenza virus were measured. Results: Olde...
Krakowski L, Krzyzanowski J, Wrona Z, Siwicki AK.The objectives of the studies were to evaluate the effect of levamisole and 1,3/1,6 glucan applied in pregnant mares on parameters of non-specific cellular and humoral immunity of foals. Eighteen mares in three experimental groups (six animals in each) and their progeny were examined. Multiparous mares, crossbreed of Polish, full-blood and Hannover lines (400-500 kg), 4-9 years old, originated from four different farms. They were kept under identical zoohygienic and nutritional conditions. The animals were randomly chosen in experimental groups. None of mares had been previously vaccinated. In...
Blunden AS, Gower SM.Lungs were obtained from 16 Thoroughbred horses, aged 1 day to 2 years, which had died or been humanely killed for reasons unrelated to disease of the lower respiratory tract. The lungs were then subjected to a histological and immunohistochemical examination of the humoral immune system. At birth there was no evidence of organized lymphoid tissue, and lymphocytes and plasma cells were virtually absent in all tissue compartments in the first week of life. However, by 12 weeks, foals exhibited well developed bronchus- and bronchiole-associated lymphoid tissue, but this had regressed progressive...
Grieder FB, Vogel SN.To investigate the role of type I interferon (IFN) and its regulatory transacting proteins, interferon regulatory factors (IRF-1 and IRF-2), in early protection against infection with virulent Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEE), we utilized mice with targeted mutations in the IFN-alpha/beta receptor, IRF-1, or IRF-2 genes. IFN-alpha/beta-receptor knockout mice are highly susceptible to peripheral infection with virulent or attenuated VEE, resulting in their death within 24 and 48 h, respectively. Treatment of normal macrophages with anti-IFN-alpha/beta antibody prior to and during infe...

Banks EM, Kyriakidou M, Little S, Hamblin AS.Leucocytes in the lung epithelium play an important role in the ability of an animal to respond appropriately to inhaled pathogens. The distribution of lymphoid and myeloid cells associated with the lung epithelium was examined immunohistochemically throughout the respiratory tract of four horses, comprising two adults from an abattoir, one pregnant mare, and her fetus (in the final stage of gestation). Cross and tangential cryosections were labelled with monoclonal antibodies against T-cell, B-cell, macrophage/dendritic myeloid cell, and major histocompatibility Class (MHC) II surface antigen...
Dowsett KF, Knott LM, Tshewang U, Jackson AE, Bodero DA, Trigg TE.To investigate the effect of two dose rates (200 and 400 ng) of a gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine on testicular function. Methods: A vaccination dose rate experiment. Methods: Two injections were administered 4 weeks apart to six colts in each treatment group. To maintain immunosuppression until the end of the breeding season, a third injection was given if antibody titres fell below 1000. Results: Effective antibody titres were present for 12 to 27 weeks. Testosterone concentrations decreased from 2.22 to 0.31 nmol/L 6 weeks after primary vaccination. Androstenedione concentrat...
Wilkołek P, Sitkowski W, Szczepanik M, Adamek Ł, Pluta M, Taszkun I, Gołyński M, Malinowska A.Allergic responses in humans, horses and other species are mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. Serum testing to detect allergen-specific IgE antibodies has been developed for dogs, cats and horses; this allows for the identification of allergens and determination of appropriate allergen- specific immunotherapies. This study compared serum allergen-specific IgE concentrations in atopic and healthy horses. The study was performed on Malopolski breed atopic (n=21) and nonatopic (n=21) clinically healthy horses. Allergen-specific IgE serum concentrations were measured in summer seasons ...
Cohen ND, Carter GK.Persistent thrombocytopenia was detected in a horse with equine infectious anemia (EIA). The thrombocytopenia was considered to be immune-mediated, developing secondary to infection with EIA virus. Epistaxis, petechial hemorrhages, subcutaneous hematomas, and edema resolved after treatment with corticosteroids; however, the owners requested that the mare by euthanatized because of infection with EIA virus. Although clinical signs attributable to immune-mediated thrombocytopenia may resolve with appropriate treatment, horses with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia secondary to EIA have a guarded ...
Henríquez C, Morán G, Carrasco C, Sarmiento J, Barría M, Folch H, Uberti B.It is accepted that T regulatory cells (Treg) control different types of immune responses. In connection with this role, we have recently described an important increase in CD4+, CD25, Foxp3+ lymphocytes in the airway system of horses coursing with an exacerbation of severe equine asthma (EA). To explore the potential role of this population in the resolution of EA inflammation, we used a murine experimental model in which airway neutrophilic inflammation, which is similar to that observed in EA, is induced in mice by continual exposure to Aspergillus fumigatus contaminated hay. This model has...

Peripheral resistance to glucocorticoids has not been investigated in horses. Objective: To determine if glucocorticoid receptor (GR) function in horses can be measured using flow cytometry, and to use this information to evaluate HPA axis dynamics. Methods: Eleven healthy adult horses in parts 1 and 2. Ten horses with SIRS and 10 age and sex matched controls in part 3. Methods: Flow cytometry was used to evaluate GR density and binding affinity (BA) in 3 healthy...
Tugirimana PL, De Clercq D, Holderbeke AL, Kint JA, De Cooman L, Deprez P, Delanghe JR.A turbidimetric method to determine serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration, based on soybean oil-phosphocholine interaction, was performed on horse serum samples to evaluate its potential diagnostic value in veterinary medicine. Intralipid 20% in 0.1 M Tris-calcium buffer (pH 7.5) was added to horse serum. After 30 min of incubation at 37 °C, the CRP-phosphocholine complexes were turbidimetrically, bichromatically (660 nm/700 nm) quantified on a commercial analyzer. Furthermore, comparison between CRP and other inflammatory markers, including white blood cell and neutrophil counts, was ...
Wernersson S, Riihimäki M, Pejler G, Waern I.Mast cells are known for their detrimental effects in various inflammatory conditions. Regimens that induce selective mast cell apoptosis may therefore be of therapeutic significance. Earlier studies have demonstrated that murine- and human-cultured mast cells are highly sensitive to apoptosis induced by the lysosomotropic agent LeuLeuOMe (LLME). However, the efficacy of lysosomotropic agents for inducing apoptosis of in vivo-derived airway mast cells and the impact on mast cells in other species have not been assessed. Here we addressed whether lysosomotropic agents can induce cell death of ...
Tunón A-M , Katila T, Magnusson U, Nummijärvi A, Rodriguez-Martinez H.The T-cell response after the introduction of semen into the uterine cavity in the mare was studied by examining, immunohistochemically, the distribution of helper T-cells (CD4+) and cytotoxic T-cells (CD8+) in endometrial biopsy specimens. Endometrial tissue samples were obtained from twenty-five gynecologically healthy mares during estrus before and 6 or 48 h after deposition of a single dose of stallion semen. An increase (P=0.04) in the number of helper T-cells (CD4+) compared to pre-insemination values was observed in the uterine body in both groups, 6 and 48 h, after insemination. No sig...

Johannisson A, Gröndahl G, Demmers S, Jensen-Waern M.Methodological aspects of flow-cytometric evaluation of the phagocytic properties of equine neutrophils were elucidated. The kinetics of attachment and ingestion were studied, and the phagocytic process was more rapidly completed when serum-opsonized yeast cells were used than with use of IgG-opsonized yeast cells. Trypan blue was successfully used to quench fluorescence of non-ingested yeast cells. There were only minor differences in the kinetics of phagocytosis between quenched and unquenched samples, indicating that attachment is rapidly followed by ingestion. Trypan blue quenching caused ...
Esser AF, Tarnuzzer RW, Tomlinson S, Tatar LD, Stanley KK.Lack of hemolytic activity of horse serum is an inherent property of horse C9. To understand the molecular reasons for this deficiency we have cloned C9 cDNA from a horse liver cDNA library and have sequenced the cDNA yielding the complete coding sequence for horse C9. Purification of C9 from horse plasma and microsequencing established the N-terminus of the mature protein and verified that the correct horse C9 cDNA clone had been isolated. The deduced amino acid sequence corresponds to a mature protein of 526 amino acids that is 77% identical to human C9. It has the same domain structure as h...
Estola T, Neuvonen E.In 1974, a very extensive influenza/A/equi 2 epidemic broke out in the Finnish horse population. To study the efficacy of influenza vaccinations a questionnaire was sent after the epidemic to all Finnish veterinarians. The answer material was selected to contain only stables which had had clinically typical cases. The material consisted 234 unvaccinated and 629 vaccinated horses. In the latter group 466 horses were vaccinated adequately. The results of the study showed that of the unvaccinated horses 212 (91%) and of the adequately vaccinated horses only 42 (9.4%) contracted clinically typical...
Parrilla Hernández S, Franck T, Munaut C, Feyereisen É, Piret J, Farnir F, Reigner F, Barrière P, Deleuze S.Myeloperoxidase (MPO), as a marker of neutrophil activation, has been associated with equine endometritis. However, in absence of inflammation, MPO is constantly detected in the uterine lumen of estrous mares. The aim of this study was to characterize MPO in the uterus of mares under physiological conditions as a first step to better understand the role of this enzyme in equine reproduction. Total and active MPO concentrations were determined, by ELISA and SIEFED assay, respectively, in low-volume lavages from mares in estrus ( = 26), diestrus ( = 18) and anestrus ( = 8) in absence of endometr...
Sedgwick AD, Lees P, Dawson J, May SA.The migration of leucocytes to sites of acute and chronic inflammation is an event of central importance to the maintenance of inflammatory processes; extravascular leucocytes are responsible for generating chemical mediators of inflammation and the phagocytosis of particulate matter. They may also be involved in the conversion of acute to chronic inflammatory lesions. Leucocytes are attracted to sites of tissue injury by a range of chemoattractants. This paper describes the development of a method for separating on Percoll gradients purified populations of equine polymorphonuclear and mononuc...
Vendrig JC, Coffeng LE, Fink-Gremmels J.In the first phase of life, in which the immune system is primed and the bacterial colonization of epithelial surfaces takes place, foals are highly susceptible to bacterial infections. Next to strategies to optimize maternally acquired immunity in individual foals, current research explores other options to modulate immune responses in foals. During the past decades, oligosaccharide supplements were developed to mimic beneficial properties of the oligosaccharides, which are present in colostrum and milk. In human infants and laboratory animal species, dietary supplementation with galacto-olig...
Bougrine SI, Fihri OF, Fehri MM.A Western immunoblotting procedure has been developed for the detection of African horse sickness virus (AHSV) protein-specific antibody responses. This assay readily identifies antibodies specific for at least 4 distinct, AHSV proteins, including VP5, NS1, NS2 and NS3/NS3a. By using the AHSV non-structural proteins as 'markers', the Western blotting procedure could be employed to provide a reliable means of discriminating between animals vaccinated with a purified, inactivated AHSV vaccine and those either naturally infected or vaccinated with a live, attenuated AHSV vaccine.
Barrett RS, Wiethoelter A, Halpin K.To elucidate veterinarians' and horse owners' perceptions towards the use of Hendra virus (HeV) antibody titre testing and how it influences veterinary advice. Methods: Six semi-structured phone interviews were conducted with veterinarians who have submitted samples for HeV antibody titre testing. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed to identify and report common themes within the data. Results: Veterinarians are predominantly using the titre tests as an alternative to vaccination due to clients' fear of vaccine reactions. The high cost of titre testing, the difficul...
Cobbold S, Holmes M, Willett B.There is now a wide range of immunological reagents that can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the companion animals (dogs, cats and horses). Many of these diseases are the veterinary equivalents of human conditions, and may therefore provide good models to study basic pathogenic mechanisms.

The presence of vitiligo in horses is greater in those with grey coats. The aim of this study was therefore to perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify genomic regions and putative candidate loci associated with vitiligo depigmentation and susceptibility in the Pura Raza Español population. For this purpose, we performed a wssGBLUP (weighted single step genomic best linear unbiased prediction) using data from a ...
Fedorka CE, El-Sheikh-Ali H, Scoggin KE, Coleman S, Humphrey EA, Troutt L, Troedsson MHT.The establishment of pregnancy involves a fine-tuned balance between protection and tolerance within the maternal immune system, as the female needs to accept a foreign antigen (the semi-allogenic fetus) while still being able to combat pathogens from the uterus. In the horse, the first uterine exposure to paternal antigens is during mating when sperm is introduced to the tissue and draining lymphatics of the uterus. Additionally, it has been suggested that seminal plasma and its proteins within it play an essential role in preparing the female tract for a suitable immunologic environment but ...

Hoikhman R, Molinková D, Pillárová D, Linhart P, Kopecká A, Jahn P.Equine sarcoids (ES) are known globally as the most frequent skin tumour affecting horses. These tumours affect the horse's monetary value, they can affect the horse's welfare and can be difficult and expensive to treat. Bovine papillomavirus (BPV) is considered to be the aetiological agent of this tumour, as BPV 1, 2 and 13 have been detected in ES. This is the only known natural cross species infection by a papillomavirus. The BPV genome can be divided into two coding regions: The early region E which encodes the transforming proteins E5, E6 and E7 as well as the replication and transcriptio...
Kolthammer J.In vitro studies have shown that uncoated carbon and carbon coated with an acrylic hydrogel are capable of adsorbing drugs from horse serum at 37 degrees. Increase in the coating weight from 2 to 4% decreased the rate of adsorption but not the total capacity. In vivo data supports the concept of carbon haemoperfusion for use in the treatment of drug overdose.
Rule EK, Boyle AG, Stefanovski D, Anis E, Linton J, Lorello O.Equine granulocytic anaplasmosis (EGA) is a common disease in adult horses, but clinical disease in foals is rarely reported. The relationship between equine maternal and neonatal antibodies to Anaplasma phagocytophilum is unclear. Objective: That mares in an endemic region would be seropositive for A. phagocytophilum and that mare and foal serum IgG concentrations for A. phagocytophilum would correlate. Additionally, we hypothesized that foal IgG concentrations for A. phagocytophilum acquired by passive immunity would decline by 6 months of age. Methods: Twenty-two healthy mare-foal pairs. ...
