Gastric emptying of four liquid meals in pony foals. Water, saline and a saline/Intralipid mixture (lipid concentration 1.25 per cent) emptied very rapidly from the stomach in neonatal pony foals, and obeyed an apparently exponential pattern. Comparison of the ability to bind lipids of beta-lactoglobulin and serum albumin of milk from ruminant and non-ruminant species. The interaction of sheep, horse, pig, human and guinea-pig whey proteins with fatty acids has been studied. Milk samples of 4 ml or more were obtained from guinea pigs, dairy cattle, horses, and humans. First results on the incorporation and excretion of 15N from orally administered urea in lactating pony mares. Two lactating pony mares were given oral offers of 20 g 15N urea [95 atom-% 15N-excess (15N')] on 6 subsequent days. About 80% of the consumed 15N' were excreted via urine and faeces, but only about 2% via milk. The 15N' secreted via milk-lysine only amounted to 0.04% of the 15N' intake. Yield and composition of milk from lactating mares: effect of lactation stage and individual differences. The yields and composition of milk from nursing mares were studied during the first two months of lactation in 11 mares of heavy breeds (784 kg). Daily yield increased from 21.7 to 24.6 kg between weeks 1 and 8 of lactation. Fat, protein, gross energy and Ca concentrations significantly decreased when lactose content increased during this period. Individual variations were higher for yield than for composition. [Determination of progesterone levels in the milk of mares: a useful aid in the diagnosis of early pregnancy]. The concentration of progesterone in milk was determined in 327 mares to establish pregnancy in an early stage (sixteen days or more). The 5 ng/ml-level of progesterone as a threshold in the EIA-system used resulted in a very useful aid in the diagnosis of early pregnancy in mares. The results of testing were not in accordance with the confirmed reality in fourteen out of 327 mares (4.3 percent).
