Analyze Diet

Topic:Ponies

Ponies are members of the Equus genus, distinguished primarily by differences in size, build, and certain physiological traits. Horses are typically larger, with a height at the withers exceeding 14.2 hands (58 inches), while ponies measure 14.2 hands or shorter. These distinctions are not solely based on size; ponies often exhibit thicker manes, tails, and overall sturdier builds. Despite these differences, both ponies and horses share similar dietary needs, social behaviors, and reproductive processes. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the anatomical, genetic, and behavioral aspects of ponies and horses, as well as their roles in various human activities and environments.

Attempted transmission of Ehrlichia risticii, causative agent of Potomac horse fever, by the ticks, Dermacentor variabilis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum.
Experimental & applied acarology    January 1, 1990   Volume 8, Issue 1-2 41-50 doi: 10.1007/BF01193380
Hahn NE, Fletcher M, Rice RM, Kocan KM, Hansen JW, Hair JA, Barker RW, Perry BD.Dermacentor variabilis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma americanum, and Ixodes scapularis ticks were investigated for their ability to transmit Potomac horse fever. Larval and nymphal ticks were exposed to Ehrlichia risticii by feeding on mice inoculated with the organism. Molted exposed ticks were then allowed to feed on susceptible ponies or mice. No evidence of transmission, either clinically or by detection of antibodies to E. risticii in mice or ponies, was observed for any tick species examined.
Cardiovascular effects of detomidine, a new alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist, in the conscious pony.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    December 1, 1989   Volume 12, Issue 4 378-388 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2885.1989.tb00688.x
Sarazan RD, Starke WA, Krause GF, Garner HE.The cardiovascular effects of detomidine and xylazine were compared in six chronically instrumented, conscious ponies. Ponies were instrumented with a micromanometer in the left ventricular chamber, a Doppler flow probe on a coronary artery and sonomicrometer crystals in the left ventricular free wall. Heart rate, ventricular systolic pressure, stroke work, dP/dtmax, minute work and coronary blood flow were measured for 4 h following intravenous injection of detomidine at several doses or xylazine at 1.1 mg/kg. Both drugs caused a profound hypertensive response at 15 s post-injection. The magn...
Efficacy of ivermectin against experimental and natural infections of Gasterophilus spp in ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1989   Volume 50, Issue 12 2120-2123
Bello TR.Antiparasitic efficacy of ivermectin against migrating Gasterophilus intestinalis was evaluated in 36 treated and 24 nontreated (n = 12) or vehicle-treated (n = 12) ponies experimentally and naturally infected with G intestinalis and naturally infected with G nasalis. Each pony was experimentally infected with 500 G intestinalis 1st instars in 2 divided doses on days -14 and -7 before treatment. On day 0, ivermectin was administered at the rate of 200 micrograms/kg of body weight by IV (n = 12) or IM injection (n = 12) or given as an oral paste (n = 12). Ponies were euthanatized and necropsied...
The effect of unilateral resection of segments of both palmar digital arteries on the navicular bone in ponies: an experimental study.
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1989   Volume 21, Issue 6 413-417 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1989.tb02186.x
Rijkenhuizen AB, Nèmeth F, Dik KJ, Goedegebuure SA, Van den Brom WE.Clinical, radiographical, scintigraphical and histological effects on the navicular bone after resection of the medial and lateral palmar digital arteries in the pastern of one forelimb in ponies are evaluated. The acute disruption of the main blood supply of the distal extremity causes lameness due to the suddenness of the resection in which the collateral circulation is insufficiently developed. Because of the compensatory collateral circulation, no permanent symptoms of ischaemia occur despite the partial resection of both palmar digital arteries. Histologically the percentage of relative o...
Effects of butorphanol tartrate on arterial pressure, jejunal blood flow, vascular resistance, O2 extraction, and O2 uptake in halothane-anesthetized ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    August 1, 1989   Volume 50, Issue 8 1202-1206
Stick JA, Loeffler BS, Arden WA, Chou CC.The effects of butorphanol tartrate on arterial pressure, jejunal blood flow, vascular resistance, oxygen extraction, and oxygen uptake were determined in 10 anesthetized ponies ventilated with a mixture of halothane and 100% oxygen, using isolated autoperfused jejunal segments. Physiologic saline solution or butorphanol tartrate (0.2 mg/kg of body weight) was administered as a single bolus into the left jugular vein. By 2 minutes, butorphanol decreased arterial blood pressure and intestinal blood flow, and increased intestinal oxygen extraction. However, intestinal vascular resistance and oxy...
Effects of xylazine and/or butorphanol or neostigmine on myoelectric activity of the cecum and right ventral colon in female ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1989   Volume 50, Issue 7 1096-1101
Rutkowski JA, Ross MW, Cullen K.Effects of xylazine HCl (0.5 mg/kg of body weight, IV) and/or butorphanol tartrate (0.04 mg/kg, IV) or neostigmine methylsulfate (0.022 mg/kg, IV) on myoelectric activity of the cecum and right ventral colon were studied in 4 conscious female ponies. Eight bipolar Ag/AgCl electrodes were sequentially placed on the seromuscular layer of the cecum (6 electrodes) and right ventral colon (2 electrodes). Recordings began 30 minutes before and continued for 90 minutes after drug administration. Each drug or drug combination was studied on 2 occasions in each pony. Two major patterns of coordinated s...

American journal of veterinary research    June 1, 1989   Volume 50, Issue 6 970-974
Lyons ET, Drudge JH, Tolliver SC.Thirteen critical tests (n = 11 horses and 2 ponies) and 4 controlled tests (n = 4 donkeys and 6 horses) were performed to evaluate the activity of the experimental macrocyclic lactone compound F28249-alpha against internal parasites of equids. In the critical tests, activity was determined mainly against the large parasites, but 1 critical test also included benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles. In the controlled tests, evaluation of drug activity included large parasites and stomach worms in all 4 tests, and lungworms in 2 tests. The period between treatment and euthanasia was 6 to 9 day...
A study of the effect of isoflurane anaesthesia on equine skeletal muscle perfusion.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    June 1, 1989   Issue 7 133-137 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1989.tb05673.x
Goetz TE, Manohar M, Nganwa D, Gustafson R.The effects of 1.1, 1.5 and 1.8 MAC (minimum alveolar concentration) isoflurane-02 anaesthesia on skeletal muscle blood flow, 02 delivery and vascular resistance were studied in the non-dependent region of seven healthy normothermic, isocapnoeic ponies. Muscle blood flow was determined with 15 microns diameter radionuclide labelled microspheres that were injected into the left ventricle. Muscle blood flow during anaesthesia was compared to unanaesthetised (control) measurements. Isoflurane administration caused a dose dependent decrease in mean aortic pressure, and skeletal muscle (temporalis,...

Electroacupuncture in the treatment of chronic lameness in horses and ponies: a controlled clinical trial. Steiss JE, White NA, Bowen JM.Electroacupuncture was used to treat lameness in horses and ponies with chronic laminitis (n = 10) or navicular disease (n = 10). A clinical trial was conducted with random allocation of equal numbers of animals to control and treatment groups. Acupuncture was performed three times per week for four consecutive weeks. The degree of lameness was assessed by 1) a grading scheme, 2) measurement of stride lengths and 3) analysis of weight distribution using a force plate. Although seven out of ten animals with chronic laminitis improved clinically during the trial, there were no statistically sign...
Antibody isotype responses in the serum and respiratory tract to primary and secondary infections with equine influenza virus (H3N8).
Veterinary microbiology    April 1, 1989   Volume 19, Issue 4 293-303 doi: 10.1016/0378-1135(89)90095-3
Hannant D, Jessett DM, O'Neill T, Mumford JA.Serum antibody (IgGab, IgM and IgA) responses to primary and secondary infection with influenza A/equine/Newmarket/79 (H3N8) by nebulised aerosol were compared with local (nasopharyngeal and tracheal) antibody responses in ponies. Circulating IgGab antibody was of long duration after primary infection, whereas IgM responses were short-lived after both primary and secondary infections. The antigenic stimulation of secondary infection with equine influenza was sufficient to induce elevations of serum IgM and IgA in the presence of high levels of circulating IgGab. These results support the poten...
Comparison of sensory nerve conduction velocities in horses versus ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 12 2138-2142
Blythe LL, Engel HN, Rowe KE.Normal sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) values in 8 ponies and 8 horses were compared by use of a percutaneous signal-averaging technique. Nerve fibers evaluated included those in the medial and lateral palmar and plantar digital nerves. Mean SNCV values were significantly slower (P less than 0.0002) for horses, compared with those values for ponies. Animal height and nerve segment length were inversely related to SNCV consistently. The SNCV values were affected by surface skin temperature by a factor of approximately 1.2 m/s change for 1 degree C change in temperatures from 35 C. The ...

Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 6 417-420 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01563.x
Prescott JF, Staempfli HR, Barker IK, Bettoni R, Delaney K.Severe colitis was induced in two ponies after oral pretreatment with clindamycin and lincomycin, followed by intestinal content from two horses which had died from naturally-occurring idiopathic colitis. Two ponies treated with antibiotic alone, and two ponies treated with intestinal content alone, were unaffected. In a further study, three ponies treated on separate occasions with lincomycin, administered orally, died or were destroyed 67 to 72 h after initial treatment. No established salmonella, yersinia or campylobacter pathogens were isolated from these ponies, but a clostridium closely ...
Protection against experimental infection with influenza virus A/equine/Miami/63 (H3N8) provided by inactivated whole virus vaccines containing homologous virus.
Epidemiology and infection    June 1, 1988   Volume 100, Issue 3 501-510 doi: 10.1017/s0950268800067236
Mumford JA, Wood JM, Folkers C, Schild GC.Thirty-one ponies immunized with inactivated virus vaccine containing A/equine/Miami/63 (H3N8) virus and six seronegative ponies were experimentally challenged with the homologous virus strain. All 6 unvaccinated ponies and 11 out of 31 vaccinated ponies became infected. A clear relationship between pre-challenge antibody, measured by single radial haemolysis (SRH), and protection was demonstrated as judged by virus excretion, febrile responses and antibody responses. Those ponies with SRH antibody levels greater than 74 mm2 were completely protected against challenge infection by the intranas...

Isoflurane anesthesia caused dose-related reduction in...
A technique for elective splenectomy of equidae using a transthoracic approach.
Veterinary surgery : VS    September 1, 1987   Volume 16, Issue 5 389-391 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1987.tb00973.x
Rigg DL, Reinertson EL, Buttrick ML.Splenectomy was performed electively on 80 ponies, horses, and donkeys for preparation in collecting Babesia antigens. Access to the abdomen was by resection of the sixteenth left rib and incision of the diaphragm. The technique afforded good exposure of the splenic vessels and attachments. Closure was facilitated by preservation of the periosteum of the resected rib. Difficulty was encountered both in surgical technique and postoperative complications in obese animals. The transthoracic approach was found to be a useful technique for equine splenectomy.
Skeletal muscle perfusion during prolonged 2.03% end-tidal isoflurane-O2 anesthesia in isocapnic ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    June 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 6 946-951

Measurements were made, using 15-micron diameter radionuclide-labeled microspheres injected into the left ventricle, and comparisons were made with data obtained from ponies in the conscious state. Isoflurane administration caused a sharp reduction in cardiac output and systemic p...
Phagocytic function of equine neutrophils exposed to Mycoplasma felis in vitro and in vivo.
American journal of veterinary research    May 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 5 758-762
Rosendal S, Lumsden JH, Viel L, Physick-Sheard PW.Neutrophils were isolated from the peripheral blood of adult equids (group 1) and were purified on a density gradient of polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated silica gel. A bactericidal assay was developed, using an equine skin isolate of Staphylococcus epidermidis as target bacterium in medium containing pooled fresh equine serum for opsonization. Significant (P less than 0.05) killing was observed after 60 or 120 minutes' incubation. Reduction in bactericidal function of blood neutrophils was not found after incubation with a virulent strain of Mycoplasma felis for 30 or 60 minutes. Similarly, the fun...
Evaluation of ivermectin paste in the treatment of ponies for Parascaris equorum infections.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    May 1, 1987   Volume 190, Issue 9 1181-1183
DiPietro JA, Lock TF, Todd KS, Reuter VE.Twenty ponies less than 18 months of age and infected with Parascaris equorum were treated with either 0.2 mg of ivermectin/kg of body weight (n = 10) or a placebo (n = 10; controls). Five control and 5 ivermectin-treated ponies were euthanatized 14 and 35 days after treatment, respectively. At necropsy, the small intestinal contents, lungs, and liver were examined for larvae and/or adult P equorum. Significantly (P less than 0.02) higher mean total numbers of P equorum were found in the small intestinal contents of the controls on day 14 (51) and on day 35 (21) than in the ivermectin-treated ...
Actions of BW540C in an equine model of acute inflammation: a preliminary study.
The veterinary quarterly    April 1, 1987   Volume 9, Issue 2 103-110 doi: 10.1080/01652176.1987.9694086
Higgins AJ, Lees P, Sedgwick AD.An equine model of acute non-immune inflammation has been developed to facilitate studies of the inflammatory process and the actions of novel anti-inflammatory drugs. Five polyester sponge strips soaked in sterile 2% carrageenin solution were placed in subcutaneous pouches prepared under local anaesthesia in the necks of conscious ponies. Serial removal of the strips and harvesting of the exudate enabled studies to be made of the cellular, biochemical and mediator aspects of the localised, acute inflammation, and the heat generated by the lesion was monitored by infra-red thermometry. Maximal...
Healing of experimentally induced corneal ulcers in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    March 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 3 427-430
Neaderland MH, Riis RC, Rebhun WC, Erb HN.Corneal ulcers to the depth of the anterior third of the stroma were created surgically in both eyes of 10 ponies. One eye in each pony was treated topically with chloramphenicol and 1% atropine ophthalmic ointments 3 times per day; the contralateral eye was not treated topically. All ponies were given phenylbutazone orally for relief of ocular pain. Fluorescein-stained ulcers were measured once a day. The median healing time of the treated eyes (11 days) and the median healing time of the nontreated eyes (13.5 days) were found not to be significantly different. Clinically, however, more sever...
Preliminary study of quantitative aspects and the effect of pulsed electromagnetic field treatment on the incorporation of equine cancellous bone grafts.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1987   Volume 19, Issue 2 120-124 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1987.tb02603.x
Kold SE, Hickman J, Meisen F.The quantitative aspects of equine cancellous bone graft incorporation and the possibility of influencing graft incorporation by daily exposure to a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) was studied in eight yearling ponies. In order to be able to quantify formative aspects of graft remodelling, a double and treble tetracycline intravital labelling technique was used. Intravital radiographs were obtained at regular intervals throughout the trial, but were found to be of little assistance in assessing any differences between stimulated and non-stimulated grafts. The ponies were humanely destroyed...

Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1987   Volume 19, Issue 2 125-128 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1987.tb02605.x
Matthews AG, Waitkins SA, Palmer MF.The prevalence of antibody titres to a range of 20 leptospira antigens in the serum of horses and ponies with no ophthalmic abnormalities and with ophthalmoscopic evidence of endogenous uveal inflammatory disease was determined using a microscopic agglutination technique. Titres against leptospira antigens were observed in 13 out of 138 (9.1 per cent) animals with no ophthalmic abnormalities, and in three out of 27 (11.1 per cent) animals with anterior uveitis. Serovar sejroe was common to all seropositive animals with anterior uveitis. The results show that leptospira infection is not a major...
Traumatic tarsal luxation repaired without internal fixation in three horses and three ponies.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    February 1, 1987   Volume 190, Issue 3 297-300
Moll HD, Slone DE, Humburg JM, Jagar JE.Three horses and three ponies were treated for traumatic luxation of the proximal intertarsal or tarsometatarsal joint. In each case, there were fractures of one or more tarsal bones. Three of the animals had disruption of one of the collateral ligaments. Five animals were treated by closed reduction and external coaptation. One pony was treated by open curettage, a cancellous bone graft, and cast immobilization. No internal fixation was used in any of these animals. From this series of cases, it would appear that closed reduction and external coaption alone is adequate treatment for most case...
Effects of xylazine on equine intestinal vascular resistance, motility, compliance, and oxygen consumption.
American journal of veterinary research    February 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 2 198-203
Stick JA, Chou CC, Derksen FJ, Arden WA.Isolated jejunal segments were perfused at a constant blood flow rate to determine simultaneously the effects of xylazine on intestinal vascular resistance, motility, compliance, and oxygen consumption in 12 anesthetized ponies. Xylazine was infused into the artery perfusing the intestinal segment (group 1), or into the jugular vein as a single IV bolus (group 2), or 3 times as IV boluses repeated at 10-minute intervals (group 3). Dose-response curves in group 1 indicated a biphasic response to the drug with vasoconstriction, increased motility, and increased oxygen consumption at lower doses ...
