Topic:Stallion

Stallions are adult male horses that have not been gelded and are often used for breeding purposes. They exhibit distinct behavioral and physiological characteristics compared to mares and geldings. Stallions are known for their strong musculature, prominent neck, and often more pronounced mane and tail. Their behavior can be more aggressive and territorial, especially during the breeding season, as they naturally compete for mating opportunities. This topic explores the anatomy, behavior, and management practices specific to stallions, as well as their role in equine reproduction. The page provides access to peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that investigate various aspects of stallion health, fertility, and behavior, contributing to the understanding and management of these horses in equine science.

Acta veterinaria Hungarica    July 22, 2021   Volume 69, Issue 2 189-193 doi: 10.1556/004.2021.00027
Kútvölgyi G, Brabender K, Andersson M, Javkhlan A, Nagy S, Páble T, Egerszegi I, Hidas A, Soós I, Kovács A.The case of an 8-year-old, sexually active but infertile Przewalski's stallion (Equus ferus przewalskii) was studied. Besides the infertility, the stallion also showed permanent problems with its body condition, being obviously weaker than all the other group members. The horse was kept in a separate place for two years with 12 mares in its harem group (six mares had foals earlier); however, none of the mares covered got pregnant. Andrological and cytogenetic investigations revealed underdeveloped testes, arrested spermatogenesis, azoospermia, and XY/XXY/X0 mosaicism. We classify the case as a...
Glycerophospholipids protect stallion spermatozoa from oxidative damage in vitro.
Reproduction & fertility    July 21, 2021   Volume 2, Issue 3 199-209 doi: 10.1530/RAF-21-0028
Medica AJ, Aitken RJ, Nicolson GL, Sheridan AR, Swegen A, De Iuliis GN, Gibb Z.Stallion sperm membranes comprise a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, making stallion spermatozoa especially vulnerable to peroxidative damage from reactive oxygen species generated as a by-product of cell metabolism. Membrane lipid replacement therapy with glycerophospholipid (GPL) mixtures has been shown to reduce oxidative damage in vitro and in vivo. The aims of this study were to test the effects of a commercial preparation of GPL, NTFactor® Lipids, on stallion spermatozoa under oxidative stress. When oxidative damage was induced by the addition of arachidonic acid to stall...

Journal of proteomics    July 21, 2021   Volume 247 104335 doi: 10.1016/j.jprot.2021.104335
Gaitskell-Phillips G, Martín-Cano FE, Ortiz-Rodríguez JM, Silva-Rodríguez A, da Silva-Álvarez E, Rojo-Domínguez P, Tapia JA, Gil MC....Even in stallions with sperm quality within normal reference ranges at ejaculation, subtle differences in sperm quality exist that in many cases lead to reduced time frames for conservation of the ejaculate and/or reduced fertility. The spermatozoon is a cell highly suitable for proteomics studies, and the use of this technique is allowing rapid advances in the understanding of sperm biology. The aim of the present study was to investigate differences among stallions of variable sperm quality (based on motility and sperm velocities), although all horses had sperm characteristics within normal ...
Sperm-bound antisperm antibodies are associated with poor cryosurvival of stallion spermatozoa.
Theriogenology    July 15, 2021   Volume 172 261-267 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2021.07.008
Ferrer MS, Canisso IF, Podico G, Ellerbrock RE, Hurley DJ, Palomares R.Different stallions exhibit a high level of variation in the ability of their sperm to survive cryopreservation. A large fraction of stallions show poor post-thaw sperm motility, and their semen is not suitable for commercial freezing. In this study, we hypothesized that the presence of sperm-bound antisperm antibodies (ASAs) was associated with poor cryosurvival of stallion sperm. Our objective was to assess the level of ASA binding to stallion sperm, and determine if it was associated with good or poor sperm cryosurvival. In Experiment 1, cooled shipped semen from 27 stallions was frozen usi...
An integrated overview on the regulation of sperm metabolism (glycolysis-Krebs cycle-oxidative phosphorylation).
Animal reproduction science    July 14, 2021   Volume 246 106805 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2021.106805
Peña FJ, Ortiz-Rodríguez JM, Gaitskell-Phillips GL, Gil MC, Ortega-Ferrusola C, Martín-Cano FE.An overview of the sperm metabolism is presented; using the stallion as a model we review glycolysis, Krebs Cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, paying special attention to the interactions among them. In addition, metabolism implies a series of coordinated oxidation-reduction reactions and in the course of these reactions reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive oxoaldehydes are produced ; the electron transport chain (ETC) in the mitochondria is the main source of the anion superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, while glycolysis produces 2-oxoaldehydes such as methylglyoxal as byproducts; due t...

Using the Judgment Bias Task to Identify Behavioral Indicators of Affective State: Do Eye Wrinkles in Horses Reflect Mood?
Frontiers in veterinary science    July 8, 2021   Volume 8 676888 doi: 10.3389/fvets.2021.676888
Hintze S, Schanz L.Identifying and validating behavioral indicators of mood are important for the assessment of animal welfare. Here, we investigated whether horses' eye wrinkle expression in a presumably neutral situation is a measure of mood as assessed in a cognitive judgment bias task (JBT). To this end, we scored pictures of the left and right eyes of 16 stallions for different aspects of eye wrinkle expression and tested the same individuals on a spatial JBT with active trial initiation. Eye wrinkle expressions were assessed by a qualitative assessment, i.e., the overall assessment of how "worried" horses ...

high-throughput droplet vitrification of stallion sperm using permeating cryoprotective agents.
Cryobiology    May 30, 2021   Volume 101 67-77 doi: 10.1016/j.cryobiol.2021.05.007
Pruß D, Yang H, Luo X, Liu D, Hegermann J, Wolkers WF, Sieme H, Oldenhof H.Stallion sperm is typically cryopreserved using low cooling rates and low concentrations of cryoprotective agents (CPAs). The inevitable water-to-ice phase transition during cryopreservation is damaging and can be prevented using vitrification. Vitrification requires high cooling rates and high CPA concentrations. In this study, the feasibility of stallion sperm vitrification was investigated. A dual-syringe pump system was used to mix sperm equilibrated in a solution with a low concentration of CPAs, with a solution containing a high CPA concentration, and to generate droplets of a defined si...

Consequently, 50 different sources were analyzed, as well as observations of an experiment of the Swiss National Stud on the subject of change from single-stallion to group husbandry and its influence on animal welfare. The results revealed that stallion husbandry in groups is possible but still rarely practiced. It was found t...
Low glucose and high pyruvate reduce the production of 2-oxoaldehydes, improving mitochondrial efficiency, redox regulation, and stallion sperm function†.
Biology of reproduction    April 18, 2021   Volume 105, Issue 2 519-532 doi: 10.1093/biolre/ioab073
Ortiz-Rodríguez JM, Martín-Cano FE, Gaitskell-Phillips GL, Silva A, Ortega-Ferrusola C, Gil MC, Peña FJ.Energy metabolism in spermatozoa is complex and involves the metabolism of carbohydrate fatty acids and amino acids. The ATP produced in the electron transport chain in the mitochondria appears to be crucial for both sperm motility and maintaining viability, whereas glycolytic enzymes in the flagella may contribute to ATP production to sustain motility and velocity. Stallion spermatozoa seemingly use diverse metabolic strategies, and in this regard, a study of the metabolic proteome showed that Gene Ontology terms and Reactome pathways related to pyruvate metabolism and the Krebs cycle were pr...
