Topic:Stallion

Stallions are adult male horses that have not been gelded and are often used for breeding purposes. They exhibit distinct behavioral and physiological characteristics compared to mares and geldings. Stallions are known for their strong musculature, prominent neck, and often more pronounced mane and tail. Their behavior can be more aggressive and territorial, especially during the breeding season, as they naturally compete for mating opportunities. This topic explores the anatomy, behavior, and management practices specific to stallions, as well as their role in equine reproduction. The page provides access to peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that investigate various aspects of stallion health, fertility, and behavior, contributing to the understanding and management of these horses in equine science.
Implications of urine F2-isoprostane metabolite concentration in horses with colic and its potential use as a predictor for surgical intervention.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    August 4, 2011   Issue 39 34-41 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.2011.00384.x
Noschka E, Werre SR, Crisman MV, Thatcher CD, Milne GL, Dahlgren LA.F2-isoprostanes have been used extensively to quantify lipid peroxidation in association with risk factors in various diseases. Horses with colic may have intestinal ischaemia and/or inflammation characterised by oxidative stress and increased production of isoprostanes. Objective: To gather preliminary data regarding the feasibility of using urine F2-isoprostanes and isoprostane metabolites as early screening tools for the presence of gastrointestinal disease requiring surgical intervention in horses and ultimately develop a stall-side test capable of identifying these horses as early as poss...

Theriogenology    July 28, 2011   Volume 76, Issue 8 1424-1432 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2011.06.011
Morrell JM, Garcia BM, Pena FJ, Johannisson A.The purpose of this study was to determine if the quality of stored stallion semen doses could be enhanced by the scaled-up version of Single Layer Centrifugation using Androcoll-E-Large. Three semen doses from each of fifteen stallions were transported overnight to the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) for processing 24 h after semen collection. Sperm quality in the resulting SLC-selected samples was significantly improved compared to the uncentrifuged samples: mean progressive motility was increased by 8% on the day of processing (P < 0.001) and by 13% after 24 h cold stor...
A gene catalogue of the euchromatic male-specific region of the horse Y chromosome: comparison with human and other mammals.
PloS one    July 25, 2011   Volume 6, Issue 7 e21374 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0021374
Paria N, Raudsepp T, Pearks Wilkerson AJ, O'Brien PC, Ferguson-Smith MA, Love CC, Arnold C, Rakestraw P, Murphy WJ, Chowdhary BP.Studies of the Y chromosome in primates, rodents and carnivores provide compelling evidence that the male specific region of Y (MSY) contains functional genes, many of which have specialized roles in spermatogenesis and male-fertility. Little similarity, however, has been found between the gene content and sequence of MSY in different species. This hinders the discovery of species-specific male fertility genes and limits our understanding about MSY evolution in mammals. Here, a detailed MSY gene catalogue was developed for the horse--an odd-toed ungulate. Using direct cDNA selection from horse...
Freezing stallion semen with the new Cáceres extender improves post thaw sperm quality and diminishes stallion-to-stallion variability.

Animal reproduction science    May 24, 2011   Volume 126, Issue 3-4 200-206 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2011.05.007
Giesecke K, Hamann H, Stock KF, Klewitz J, Martinsson G, Distl O, Sieme H.The research of fertility in humans and other mammals has strongly advanced in the recent years. The examination of molecular mechanisms influencing horse fertility is relatively recent. We chose the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), the sperm autoantigenic protein 17 (SP17) and the follicle stimulating hormone (FSHB) as candidates for determining stallion fertility and to analyze associations of intragenic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), flanking microsatellites and candidate-gene linked haplotypes with the pregnancy rate per oestrus (PRO) in 179 Hanoverian stallions. Fertility tra...
A synergistic effect of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) on equine luteinizing hormone (eLH)-induced testosterone production from cultured Leydig cells of horses.
Animal reproduction science    May 24, 2011   Volume 126, Issue 3-4 195-199 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2011.05.008
Yoon MJ, Roser JF.Localization of IGF-I and IGF-IR were observed in Leydig cells of horses using immunohistochemistry (IHC), suggesting IGF-I may play a role in equine Leydig cell steroidogenesis. Previous studies in other species have indicated that IGF-I increases basal and/or LH/hCG-induced testosterone production. The objectives of this study were to (1) test the synergistic effect of IGF-I on eLH-induced testosterone production in cultured equine Leydig cells and (2) determine if this effect is reproductive stage-dependent. Testes were collected from five pubertal (1.1±0.1 year; 1-1.5 year) and eight post...

Equine veterinary journal    May 20, 2011   Volume 43, Issue 2 184-189 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.2010.00135.x
Lydka M, Kotula-Balak M, Kopera-Sobota I, Tischner M, Bilińska B.Specific patterns of cytoskeletal filaments reflect a functional state of the cell. In testicular cells intermediate filaments (IFs) are of the vimentin type. Since it is known that Sertoli cells regulate the spermatogenic function in the male gonad, it became important to propose a system that could quantify the state of seminiferous tubular quality. To date, a Johnsen score system has never been used to equine testes. Objective: To demonstrate the expression pattern of vimentin in testes of mature Arabian stallions and correlate its distribution with grade of seminiferous tubule impairment a...

Animal reproduction science    May 4, 2011   Volume 126, Issue 1-2 96-100 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2011.04.020
Mari G, Castagnetti C, Rizzato G, Mislei B, Iacono E, Merlo B.Stallions are not selected for fertility but for other criteria (pedigree, conformation, performances, progeny), therefore valuable but subfertile stallions with poor semen quality are frequently used in commercial breeding programs. The object of this study was to evaluate whether sperm selection through a silane-coated silica colloid gradient centrifugation, with or without the addition of seminal plasma of a high fertile stallion, could improve the pregnancy rates of an oligospermic valuable stallion in a commercial breeding program. In 2008 breeding season (experiment 1, n=104 mares), simp...
Does examination of fecal samples 24 hours after cestocide treatment increase the sensitivity of Anoplocephala spp. detection in naturally infected horses?
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    May 3, 2011   Volume 52, Issue 2 158-161
Elsener J, Villeneuve A.Fecal samples were examined immediately before and 24 to 48 h after cestocide treatment for a comparative detection of tapeworm-positive horses. In early winter, 17 weanlings, 20 yearlings, 15 2-year-old horses, 24 breeding mares, and 2 stallions were treated with praziquantel in combination with a macrocyclic lactone. The horses were presumed to be naturally infected with tapeworms after pasture grazing. Fecal samples were collected before treatment (Day 0), at 24 or 48 h after treatment (Day 1-2), and 16 to 21 d after treatment (Day 16-21). A Wisconsin test was done on all fecal samples. Odd...

Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    April 28, 2011   Volume 46, Issue 6 1073-1081 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0531.2011.01789.x
Kareskoski M, Sankari S, Johannisson A, Kindahl H, Andersson M, Katila T.Semen jets in the stallion's ejaculate differ in both the biochemical composition of seminal plasma (SP) and in sperm concentration, forming sperm-rich fractions (HIGH) and sperm-poor fractions (LOW). This study examined (i) the association of the levels of selected components of SP [alkaline phosphatase (AP), acid phosphatase (ACP), Na(+), Cl(-), K(+), Ca, Mg and prostaglandin E(2)] with semen quality, sperm longevity and fertility; (ii) the effects of the presence of SP on sperm survival during cooled storage; (iii) the differences in the composition of SP between sperm-rich and sperm-poor e...
Relationship between sperm motility, morphology and the fertility of stallions.
Theriogenology    April 16, 2011   Volume 76, Issue 3 547-557 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2011.03.007
Love CC.Sperm quality has an important role in determining fertility. Although there have been numerous studies to document the relationship between sperm quality and fertility, the methods of determining this association and conclusions vary. In the present study, computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was used for evaluation of sperm motility, and differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy was used for evaluating sperm morphologic features of breeding stallions. Fertility was measured using three endpoints: seasonal pregnancy rate (PR), percent pregnant/cycle (PC), and percent pregnant/fir...
Osmotic properties of stallion sperm subpopulations determined by simultaneous assessment of cell volume and viability.
Theriogenology    April 15, 2011   Volume 76, Issue 2 386-391 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2011.02.027
Oldenhof H, Blässe AK, Wolkers WF, Bollwein H, Sieme H.The aim of this study was to determine the osmotic tolerance limits of stallion sperm as well as the osmotic behavior of different sperm subpopulations, including viable and non-viable cells as well as viable cells of different average sizes. A flow cytometric approach was used for simultaneous assessment of cell volume and permeability of the plasma membrane for the fluorescent dye propidium iodide while exposing the cells to media with different solute concentrations. Equine spermatozoa have limited osmotic tolerance limits: exposure to hypotonic conditions below approximately 240 mOsm kg(-1...
