Topic:Stallion

Stallions are adult male horses that have not been gelded and are often used for breeding purposes. They exhibit distinct behavioral and physiological characteristics compared to mares and geldings. Stallions are known for their strong musculature, prominent neck, and often more pronounced mane and tail. Their behavior can be more aggressive and territorial, especially during the breeding season, as they naturally compete for mating opportunities. This topic explores the anatomy, behavior, and management practices specific to stallions, as well as their role in equine reproduction. The page provides access to peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that investigate various aspects of stallion health, fertility, and behavior, contributing to the understanding and management of these horses in equine science.

Veterinary microbiology    September 16, 2010   Volume 148, Issue 2-4 402-407 doi: 10.1016/j.vetmic.2010.09.008
Rola J, Larska M, Rola JG, Belák S, Autorino GL.The aim of the study was to determine the situation of equine arteritis virus (EAV) infections in hucul horses. A total of 176 horses (154 mares and 22 stallions) from the biggest hucul horse stud in Poland were tested. Antibodies against EAV were detected in 97 (55.1%) horses. The EAV seroprevalence among mares was 53.2% while in stallions - 68.2%. The percentage of positive mares increased with their age, thus amongst the mares of less than 2 years of age the percentage was 32.5%, while in the group of 3-5 years old increased to 59.4% and in the mares in the age of 6-10 years and older than ...
Single layer centrifugation of stallion spermatozoa consistently selects the most robust spermatozoa from the rest of the ejaculate in a large sample size.
Equine veterinary journal    September 16, 2010   Volume 42, Issue 7 579-585 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.2010.00101.x
Morrell JM, Rodriguez-Martinez H, Johannisson A.An improvement in sperm quality after single layer centrifugation (SLC) has been seen in previous studies using small sample sizes (for example, n = 10 stallions). There is a need to investigate whether this improvement is repeatable over several breeding seasons with a larger number of stallions (n ≥ 30 stallions). Objective: To make a retrospective analysis of the results of SLC performed on more than 250 sperm samples (176 ejaculates) from 31 stallions in 3 consecutive breeding seasons. Methods: Sperm quality (motility, proportion of morphologically normal spermatozoa and the proportion o...
Egg yolk plasma can replace egg yolk in stallion freezing extenders.
Theriogenology    September 15, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 1 105-114 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.07.015
Pillet E, Duchamp G, Batellier F, Beaumal V, Anton M, Desherces S, Schmitt E, Magistrini M.Hen egg yolk is normally used as a cryoprotective agent in semen freezing extenders, but its use has sanitary and practical disadvantages. Moreover the protection afforded by egg yolk has not yet been completely elucidated. The objective of this study was to compare the egg yolk plasma fraction to whole egg yolk in stallion freezing extender. Plasma contains mainly Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL), which are widely presumed to be the cryoprotective agent in egg yolk. Plasma can be produced on an industrial scale, sterilised by gamma-irradiation and incorporated in a ready-to-use extender (our ul...

Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T    September 9, 2010   Volume 23, Issue 6 411-416 doi: 10.3415/VCOT-09-12-0130
Hauspie S, Martens A, Declercq J, Busoni V, Vanderperren K, van Bree H, Saunders JH.To describe the radiographic appearance of the dorsoproximal aspect of the sagittal ridge of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bone in Warmblood horses. Methods: The lateromedial radiographic projections of the metacarpo-/metatarsophalangeal joints performed on horses as a part of stallion selection were used. The dorsal aspect of the distal third metacarpal/metatarsal bone was divided in two areas. The appearance of the bone surface in area I was classified as normal, irregular, notch, indentation and lucency. For area II, the categories were normal, irregular, depression or lucency and flatten...
Selected ovarian ultrasonographic characteristics during vernal transition are useful to estimate time of first ovulation of the year.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    September 3, 2010   Volume 46, Issue 2 240-246 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0531.2010.01650.x
Atayde L, Rocha A.It is important to get mares pregnant as early as possible after vernal transition and thus, identification signs of impending 1st ovulation of the year are warranted. To identify clinical indicators of an approaching first ovulation of the year, mares were teased with a stallion for oestrous detection starting January 3 and subjected to ultrasonographic examination. Day of first appearance of uterus oedema, follicular wall invagination, intrafollicular echogenicity, double contour of the follicle wall, increase in granulosa thickness, follicular wall hyperechogenicity and appearance of pear-s...
Redox status of equine seminal plasma reflects the pattern and magnitude of DNA damage in sperm cells.
Theriogenology    August 21, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 9 1677-1684 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.07.007
Wnuk M, Lewinska A, Oklejewicz B, Bartosz G, Tischner M, Bugno-Poniewierska M.Antioxidant status of seminal plasma from 23 stallions was evaluated. We found a negative correlation between total antioxidant capacity (ABTS(•+) decolorization assay) and thiol content of seminal plasma, and sperm DNA damage (8-oxoG immunostaining, TUNEL reaction, comet assay). Low seminal redox status was the strongest correlated with 8-oxoG level which may indicate that seminal total antioxidant capacity influences mainly the formation of single strand DNA breaks in sperm cells. Since inter-individual differences in seminal antioxidant status were reported, we postulated that the redox s...
Assessment of the mineral density and mineral content of the equine third metacarpal and first phalanx bone by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry.
Acta veterinaria Hungarica    August 18, 2010   Volume 58, Issue 3 317-329 doi: 10.1556/AVet.58.2010.3.5
Tóth P, Horváth C, Ferencz V, Nagy K, Gligor N, Szenci O, Bodó G.In the first part of this methodological study eleven metacarpi of 9 skeletally normal horses were examined from 4 directions by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The differences between the dorsopalmar-palmarodorsal and lateromedial-mediolateral (opposite sites) bone mineral density (BMD) values were found to be nonsignificant. In the second part of the study the precision of the Norland XR-26 densitometer was tested by measuring 34 metacarpal bones and 34 proximal phalanges, each of them three times, from a single direction. The difference between the individual measurements of the fir...

The results of these examinations and the behavior of 21 mares and 10 stallions before the first and after the second administration of the GnRH vaccine were compared. In 84 % of all cases a decrease of the unwanted behavior could be observed. In the mares the ovaries were significan...
Techniques for the insemination of low doses of stallion sperm.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    July 16, 2010   Volume 45 Suppl 2 35-39 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0531.2010.01632.x
Samper JC, Plough T.In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the quality and commercial use of frozen equine semen. The emergence of new reproductive technologies, coupled with the high prices for an insemination dose from some stallions, the increasing costs of import and export and the marketing policies of stallion agents or owners in the sport horse industry has stimulated the fractionation of doses for insemination. Consequently, the sperm number and the volume of an insemination dose are significantly reduced. To deliver lower doses of sperm in lower volumes compared to the standard dose...
Demographic analysis of breeding structure in Japanese thoroughbred population.
Journal of equine science    July 16, 2010   Volume 21, Issue 2 11-16 doi: 10.1294/jes.21.11
Yamashita J, Oki H, Hasegawa T, Honda T, Nomura T.To investigate the breeding structure in the Japanese Thoroughbred population, we applied a demographic analysis to the populations of foals produced from 1978 to 2005. The migration rate estimated from the proportion of foals produced by imported breeding horses was around 40% over the investigated period. After early 1990s, the migration rate through stallions imported from USA sharply increased. The average generation interval was within range of 10.5-11.5 years. The longer generation interval of Thoroughbred was considered to be a reflection of the fact that Thoroughbred horses begin breed...
Total RNA isolation from stallion sperm and testis biopsies.
Theriogenology    July 7, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 6 1099-1106e11062 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.04.023
Das PJ, Paria N, Gustafson-Seabury A, Vishnoi M, Chaki SP, Love CC, Varner DD, Chowdhary BP, Raudsepp T.Sperm mRNA transcriptional profiles can be used to evaluate male fertility, yet differences between species in sperm attributes and packaging require adjustments in sperm RNA isolation protocols. The objective was to optimize RNA isolation methodology for fresh, frozen, and extended ejaculates, and epididymal sperm of stallions. Additionally, a protocol for RNA isolation from testis biopsies was established. Separation of sperm from somatic cells was critical for assuring the isolation of sperm-specific RNA. The highest purity was obtained by centrifuging ejaculates and epididymal sperm at 200...

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 2, 2010   Volume 237, Issue 1 82-86 doi: 10.2460/javma.237.1.82
Arnold CE, Brinsko SP, Love CC, Varner DD.6 geldings and 5 stallions were evaluated from January 2007 through April 2009 for the following conditions requiring phallectomy: chronic paraphimosis (n = 7), squamous cell carcinoma of the penis (3), and priapism (1). Results: None of the 7 horses with paraphimosis was able to retract the penis. Chronicity of the paraphimosis in 6 horses ranged from 2 weeks to 2 months and was unknown in the seventh horse. Horses with paraphimosis had been medically treated without success. The horse with priapism had developed the condition secondary to acepromazine administration 2 days prior to referral ...
Comparative studies on bull and stallion seminal DNase activity and interaction with semen extender and spermatozoa.
Animal reproduction science    June 30, 2010   Volume 121, Issue 3-4 249-258 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2010.06.003
Alghamdi AS, Funnell BJ, Bird SL, Lamb GC, Rendahl AK, Taube PC, Foster DN.We performed a series of comparative studies of bull and stallion seminal plasma (SP) and its role on sperm-neutrophil binding as well as the interaction between semen extender and seminal DNase. Because of contrasting roles of SP on sperm-neutrophil binding between horses and cattle, it was suspected there were some species-specific differences on sperm interaction with SP proteins due to the variations in the natural location of semen deposition (uterus compared to vagina). Bull frozen-thawed sperm removed from egg yolk extender showed similar results to fresh sperm, but this also caused ext...
Biomarkers of in vivo fertility in sperm and seminal plasma of fertile stallions.
Theriogenology    June 30, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 6 956-967 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.04.025
Novak S, Smith TA, Paradis F, Burwash L, Dyck MK, Foxcroft GR, Dixon WT.The global proteome of sperm and seminal plasma of fertile stallions was investigated to determine whether associations with relative in vivo fertility exist. Seven stallions at stud in a commercial breeding station were collected throughout the breeding season and bred to a total of 164 mares to determine conception rates. On three occasions during the breeding season, raw semen was obtained from a regular collection for proteomic analysis using two-dimensional electrophoresis and also assessed for routine semen quality end points. First cycle conception rate was negatively related to ejacula...

Research in veterinary science    June 18, 2010   Volume 90, Issue 1 133-137 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2010.05.004
Cywinska A, Szarska E, Kowalska A, Ostaszewski P, Schollenberger A.Exercise-induced intravascular haemolysis and "sport anemia" are widely reported in human sports medicine. It has been recognized also in horses, however, the clinical importance and the onset of this condition seem different than in human. In this study we investigated the episodes of intravascular haemolysis, indicated by the increase in plasma haemoglobin and the decrease in serum haptoglobin levels, after routine training sessions in race horses. Heart rate and changes in haematological parameters confirmed, that the exertion was relatively high. Intravascular haemolysis did not appear in ...
Localization of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR) in equine testes.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    June 16, 2010   Volume 46, Issue 2 221-228 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0531.2010.01643.x
Yoon MJ, Berger T, Roser JF.The insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) is a key regulator of reproductive functions. IGF-I actions are primarily mediated by IGF-IR. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the presence of IGF-I and IGF-I Receptor (IGF-IR) in stallion testicular tissue. The hypotheses of this study were (i) IGF-I and IGF-IR are present in stallion testicular cells including Leydig, Sertoli, and developing germ cells, and (ii) the immunolabelling of IGF-I and IGF-IR varies with age. Testicular tissues from groups of 4 stallions in different developmental ages were used. Rabbit anti-human polyclona...

Membrane permeability parameters for freezing of stallion sperm as determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
Cryobiology    June 8, 2010   Volume 61, Issue 1 115-122 doi: 10.1016/j.cryobiol.2010.06.002
Oldenhof H, Friedel K, Sieme H, Glasmacher B, Wolkers WF.Cellular membranes are one of the primary sites of injury during freezing and thawing for cryopreservation of cells. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to monitor membrane phase behavior and ice formation during freezing of stallion sperm. At high subzero ice nucleation temperatures which result in cellular dehydration, membranes undergo a profound transition to a highly ordered gel phase. By contrast, low subzero nucleation temperatures, that are likely to result in intracellular ice formation, leave membrane lipids in a relatively hydrated fluid state. The extent of free...

Selenium in blood, semen, seminal plasma and spermatozoa of stallions and its relationship to sperm quality.
Reproduction, fertility, and development    May 11, 2010   Volume 22, Issue 5 886-891 doi: 10.1071/RD10032
Bertelsmann H, Keppler S, Höltershinken M, Bollwein H, Behne D, Alber D, Bukalis G, Kyriakopoulos A, Sieme H.The essential trace element selenium is indispensable for male fertility in mammals. Until now, little data existed regarding the relationship between selenium and sperm quality in the stallion. Selenium, or selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase activity, was determined in red blood cells, semen, seminal plasma and spermatozoa, and the percentages of spermatozoa with progressive motility (PMS), intact membranes (PMI), altered (positive) acrosomal status (PAS) and detectable DNA damage, determined by the sperm chromatin structure assay, were evaluated in 41 healthy stallions (three samples ...
Inhibition of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore reduces “apoptosis like” changes during cryopreservation of stallion spermatozoa.
Theriogenology    May 10, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 3 458-465 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.02.029
Ortega Ferrusola C, González Fernández L, Salazar Sandoval C, Macías García B, Rodríguez Martínez H, Tapia JA, Peña FJ.In order to evaluate to what extent the changes that occur during cryopreservation involve the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PT-pore), a specific inhibitor was used during the cryopreservation process of stallion spermatozoa. Four ejaculates from each of 7 stallions were frozen using a standard protocol. Before freezing, each ejaculate was split into three subsamples. The first was supplemented with 2.5 microM bongkrekic acid (BA) and the second with 5 microM BA. The third subsample served as control. The BA significantly reduced the percentage of spermatozoa depicting active cas...
