Topic:Stallion

Stallions are adult male horses that have not been gelded and are often used for breeding purposes. They exhibit distinct behavioral and physiological characteristics compared to mares and geldings. Stallions are known for their strong musculature, prominent neck, and often more pronounced mane and tail. Their behavior can be more aggressive and territorial, especially during the breeding season, as they naturally compete for mating opportunities. This topic explores the anatomy, behavior, and management practices specific to stallions, as well as their role in equine reproduction. The page provides access to peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that investigate various aspects of stallion health, fertility, and behavior, contributing to the understanding and management of these horses in equine science.
Growth hormone and prolactin concentrations in plasma of horses: sex differences and the effects of acute exercise and administration of growth hormone-releasing hormone.
Journal of animal science    November 1, 1994   Volume 72, Issue 11 2911-2918 doi: 10.2527/1994.72112911x
Thompson DL, DePew CL, Ortiz A, Sticker LS, Rahmanian MS.Three experiments were conducted to determine 1) the relationship between prolactin and growth hormone (GH) secretion in mares and the response to GH-releasing hormone (GHRH), 2) whether plasma GH and prolactin concentrations differed among mares, stallions, and geldings, and 3) whether sexual differences existed after administration of GHRH and acute exercise. In Exp. 1, 10-min blood samples were collected from 12 mares for 8 h, and GHRH (0, 45, 90, or 180 micrograms) was administered at 6 h. In Exp. 2, 15-min blood samples were collected for 4 h from 10 mares, stallions, and geldings. In Exp...
Involvement of endogenous opioids in the regulation of LH and testosterone release in the male horse.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    November 1, 1994   Volume 102, Issue 2 327-336 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.1020327
Aurich C, Sieme H, Hoppe H, Schlote S.To investigate the involvement of endogenous opioids in the regulation of gonadotrophin release in male horses, effects of the opioid antagonist naloxone (0.5 mg kg-1 i.v.) on plasma LH and testosterone concentrations and the possible influence of season and of gonadal steroids were investigated. To determine quantitative as well as qualitative changes in gonadotrophin release, LH concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay and by an in vitro bioassay. Experiments were performed in May, August and December. In stallions, basal LH secretion in May and August was significantly higher than i...
In vitro fertilization rate of horse oocytes with partially removed zonae.
Theriogenology    October 1, 1994   Volume 42, Issue 5 795-802 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(94)90448-r
Choi YH, Okada Y, Hochi S, Braun J, Sato K, Oguri N.Frozen-thawed ejaculated stallion spermatozoa were preincubated for 3 h in BO medium containing 5 mM caffeine and then treated with 0.1 micro M calcium ionophore A23187 for 60 sec. Aliquots of the sperm suspension (final concentration 1-2 x 10(7)/ml) were added to the oocytes which had been matured in vitro for 32 h. In Experiment 1, there were 3 groups of oocytes; cumulus intact, denuded zona-intact, and zona-free. Cumulus cells were removed with 0.5% hyaluronidase and the zona pellucida with 0.1% protease. The oocytes were fixed 20 h after insemination with acetic acid:ethanol (1:3) and stai...
The effect of insemination volume on pregnancy rates of pony mares.
Theriogenology    September 1, 1994   Volume 42, Issue 4 571-578 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(94)90374-r
Bedford SJ, Hinrichs K.It has recently been reported that large insemination volumes might affect fertility of mares. The results from these studies are confounded by other factors, however, such as inadequate number of spermatozoa in the inseminate. We conducted a study to test whether volume alone affects fertility when sufficient numbers of spermatozoa are present. Semen from one stallion was collected, extended at 50 x 10(6) spermatozoa/ml, and stored in a commercial semen cooling device for 18 to 30 h before insemination. Ten pony mares were assigned during estrus in random pairs to be bred every other day with...
Plasma concentrations of prolactin, glucose, insulin, urea nitrogen, and total amino acids in stallions after ingestion of feed or gastric administration of feed components.
Journal of animal science    September 1, 1994   Volume 72, Issue 9 2345-2353 doi: 10.2527/1994.7292345x
DePew CL, Thompson DL, Fernandez JM, Southern LL, Sticker LS, Ward TL.Concentrations of prolactin, glucose, insulin, urea N, and total amino acids in plasma of stallions after ingestion of pelleted feed were compared to those after direct gastric administration of water, NaCl, egg albumin, or corn starch (Exp. 1) or water, egg albumin, hydrolyzed casein (Amicase), or a mixture of indispensable amino acids (Exp. 2). Stallions were fed once daily (75% pellet and 25% hay) at 1500 for 30 d. On d 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30, blood samples were collected every 30 min from 1 h before through 4 h after treatment, which occurred at 1100. In Exp. 1, there was a positive secret...
Interaction of equine spermatozoa with oviduct epithelial cell explants is affected by estrous cycle and anatomic origin of explant.
Biology of reproduction    August 1, 1994   Volume 51, Issue 2 222-228 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod51.2.222
Thomas PG, Ball BA, Brinsko SP.Regulation of attachment of equine spermatozoa to homologous oviduct epithelium was investigated by co-culture of spermatozoa with oviductal epithelial cell explants. Stallion spermatozoa were incubated with explants derived from the isthmus and ampulla of follicular, postovulatory, and diestrous mares. Steroid treatments (estradiol, progesterone, or control) were applied across all explant groups. Estimates of motility and total numbers of attached spermatozoa were made 0.5, 24, and 48 h after initiation of co-culture. Equine spermatozoa attached by their rostral acrosomal region to both cili...
Effect of seminal plasma on motion characteristics of epididymal and ejaculated stallion spermatozoa during storage at 5 degrees C.
DTW. Deutsche tierarztliche Wochenschrift    August 1, 1994   Volume 101, Issue 8 319-322
Braun J, Torres-Boggino F, Hochi S, Oguri N.The objective of this experiment was to examine the effect of seminal plasma on motion characteristics of epididymal and ejaculated equine spermatozoa during storage at 5 degrees C. Epididymal spermatozoa were flushed with either seminal plasma or a skim milk-glucose extender. Ejaculated spermatozoa were collected with extender added 10 minutes after semen collection and addition of extender during ejaculation by placing 50 ml extender in the collection bottle. Semen samples were centrifuged and resuspended with a skim milk-glucose extender containing seminal plasma (0, 5 and 25%; v/v), prepar...
A subpopulation of morphologically normal, motile spermatozoa attach to equine oviductal epithelial cell monolayers.
Biology of reproduction    August 1, 1994   Volume 51, Issue 2 303-309 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod51.2.303
Thomas PG, Ball BA, Miller PG, Brinsko SP, Southwood L.Attachment of spermatozoa to oviductal epithelial cells (OEC) may be a prefertilization event in some species. We tested the hypothesis that spermatozoa that attach to equine OEC monolayers are a selected subpopulation of the initial inseminate, containing a higher proportion of morphologically normal, motile cells than the inseminate. Washed stallion spermatozoa were cocultured with monolayers of OEC or monolayers of Vero cells, and controls were incubated in wells coated with basement membrane extract (Matrigel [Mgel]) or in plastic (uncoated) wells. Unattached spermatozoa were removed by ri...
Localization of aromatase in equine Leydig cells.
Domestic animal endocrinology    July 1, 1994   Volume 11, Issue 3 291-298 doi: 10.1016/0739-7240(94)90020-5
Eisenhauer KM, McCue PM, Nayden DK, Osawa Y, Roser JF.Stallion testes secrete large amounts of estrogens, but the cellular location of the enzyme that converts androgens to estrogens, cytochrome P450 aromatase, has not been determined. The goal of the present study was to immunocytochemically localize stallion testicular aromatase using a polyclonal antibody generated against human placental cytochrome P450 aromatase. Testes were obtained from 12 stallions from 2 to 23 years of age, during both the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Immunoreactivity was confined to the Leydig cells in all testes examined. No immunostaining was observed in the Ser...
XX male syndrome in a cryptorchid stallion.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1994   Volume 205, Issue 1 83-85
Constant SB, Larsen RE, Asbury AC, Buoen LC, Mayo M.A bilateral cryptorchid stallion with mild development of mammary glands was identified as an XX male by karyotyping. Necropsy revealed underdeveloped accessory sex organs and hypoplastic, inguinally located testes that were deficient of spermatogonia. Evaluation of routine hormonal profiles (without karyotyping) would have failed to diagnose this syndrome.
Skeletal muscle characteristics in red blood cell normovolaemic and hypervolaemic standardbred racehorses.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1994   Volume 26, Issue 4 319-322 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1994.tb04393.x
Ronéus M, Persson SG, Essén-Gustavsson B, Arnason T.Muscle biopsy specimens from the middle gluteal muscle were studied in 16 red blood cell hypervolaemic (Group HV) and 19 normovolaemic (Group NV) Standardbred racehorses. All horses were stallions, 4-8 years old and having similar mean racing performance values, as described by an individual selection index value. All horses raced regularly but those in Group HV did not perform as expected and were therefore referred to the clinics for exercise tolerance testing. Muscle biopsy specimens were analysed for fibre type distribution (Type I, IIA and IIB), fibre area and relative fibre area. In addi...
P2 protamines are phosphorylated in vitro by protein kinase C, whereas P1 protamines prefer cAMP-dependent protein kinase. A comparative study of five mammalian species.
European journal of biochemistry    July 1, 1994   Volume 223, Issue 1 165-169 doi: 10.1111/j.1432-1033.1994.tb18979.x
Pirhonen A, Linnala-Kankkunen A, Mënpää PH.P1 protamines isolated from ejaculated human, stallion, bull, boar and ram spermatozoa and P2 protamines from human and stallion spermatozoa were subjected, after alkaline phosphatase treatment, to in vitro phosphorylation reactions using cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC). All P1 protamines were phosphorylated by PKA, whereas P2 protamines were phosphorylated only by PKC. In addition, human, stallion and boar, but not bull and ram, P1 protamines were phosphorylated by PKC. After phosphoamino acid analysis, the protamines showing positive signals for phosphoserine (...

[Displacement and resection of the ascending colon in the horse: a literature review on the basis of 2 cases].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    May 15, 1994   Volume 119, Issue 10 288-292
Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM, van der Velden MA.A review of displacements and surgery of the large colon is given on the basis of two cases. A four-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare was referred, one week before foaling, for colic of twelve hours duration. At rectal palpation a large uterus was found, but no cause for the colic. Laparotomy revealed a colonic volvulus and resection of about 75% of the large colon was necessary. A dead foal was born five days postoperatively, but the mare recovered well. A nine year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion with a history of frequent colic had been treated for nephrosplenic entrapment three times. Resection o...
Dominant inheritance of overo spotting in paint horses.
The Journal of heredity    May 1, 1994   Volume 85, Issue 3 222-224 doi: 10.1093/oxfordjournals.jhered.a111439
Bowling AT.Analysis of selected studbook records of the American Paint Horse Association, consisting of 687 foals sired by 13 overo stallions from non-overo mares, supports the inheritance of overo spotting as an autosomal dominant gene. More than one gene may control patterns registered as overo. Additional studies are necessary to explain the sporadic occurrence of overo spotting from nonspotted quarter horse parents and to confirm the inheritance of overo spotting in other breeds.
Seasonal and epididymal maturation of stallion spermatozoa.
Andrologia    May 1, 1994   Volume 26, Issue 3 161-164 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0272.1994.tb00781.x
Rodríguez H, Bustos-Obregón E.Epididymal sperm maturation in the stallion was analysed using eight epididymides and deferent ducts from healthy animals. Samples were obtained in June-July and October-November (resting and breeding periods, respectively). Epididymides were divided into head, body and tail. Sperm samples were submitted to a routine seminogram, chromatin decondensation test (Lung, 1972) and sperm velocity determination (Makler, 1980). Results demonstrate that stallion spermatozoa achieve maturation in the transition between the head and body of the epididymis as revealed by chromatin decondensation. Objective...
Identification of phosphoseryl residues in protamines from mature mammalian spermatozoa.
Biology of reproduction    May 1, 1994   Volume 50, Issue 5 981-986 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod50.5.981
Pirhonen A, Linnala-Kankkunen A, Mäenpää PH.Protamines isolated from ejaculated human, stallion, bull, boar, and ram spermatozoa were subjected to phosphoserine conversion reaction and protein sequencing. Phosphoserines were detected as S-ethylcysteines. Endogenously phosphorylated protamines have previously been found only in ejaculated human sperm. In this study, we demonstrate that ejaculated sperm from other species also contain protamines phosphorylated at serine residues. In P1-protamines, the endogenously phosphorylated serines were located at the N-terminal region in all species studied, whereas in major forms of human and stall...
Reproductive characteristics and semen quality in maiden Dutch Warmblood stallions.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    May 1, 1994   Volume 101, Issue 1 183-187 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.1010183
Parlevliet JM, Kemp B, Colenbrander B.The semen characteristics and testicular size of 398 3-year-old maiden Dutch Warmblood stallions were studied during February and March. Mean values (+/- SD) of age (1030 +/- 88 days) and testicular size (9.8 +/- 0.9 cm) of the maiden stallions were determined as well as the following semen characteristics (mean of two ejaculates, taken 1 h apart): volume (65 +/- 26 ml), sperm concentration (2.061 +/- 1.685 x 10(8) ml-1), total number of spermatozoa (1.129 +/- 0.71 x 10(10)), percentage of progressively motile spermatozoa (68 +/- 9%), percentage of live spermatozoa with normal morphology (66 +...
Equine self-mutilation syndrome (57 cases).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    April 15, 1994   Volume 204, Issue 8 1219-1223
Dodman NH, Normile JA, Shuster L, Rand W.Owners who believed they had a horse with self-mutilating behavior were asked to complete a questionnaire to obtain information on the signalment, clinical history, clinical signs, management, and treatment of the condition. Fifty-two owners of 59 horses responded; 2 cases were omitted because an organic cause was determined. Owners also were asked to complete information for unaffected horses on the same farm. Various breeds were affected, and of the 57 horses, 20 were stallions, 31 were geldings, and 6 were mares. Affected horses tended to develop the condition prior to sexual maturity. Clin...
Platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase activity in seminal plasma from the bull, stallion, rabbit, and rooster.
Biology of reproduction    April 1, 1994   Volume 50, Issue 4 912-916 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod50.4.912
Hough SR, Parks JE.Platelet-activating factor (PAF) acetylhydrolase, which inactivates PAF, has been detected in human and bovine seminal plasma and may represent a mechanism for regulating sperm-derived PAF. This study was designed to characterize further PAF acetylhydrolase in seminal plasma from domestic animal species. Sperm-free seminal plasma from the bull, stallion, rabbit, and rooster was assayed for acetylhydrolase activity based on the release of [3H]acetate from PAF. As reported previously for bull seminal plasma, activity in stallion, rabbit, and rooster seminal plasma was linear with both time and p...
Identification of 2 stallion sperm-specific proteins and their autoantibody response.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1994   Volume 26, Issue 2 148-151 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1994.tb04355.x
Teuscher C, Kenney RM, Cummings MR, Catten M.In this study, 2 stallions were immunised with their own spermatozoa to ascertain whether an antisperm autoantibody response could be mounted. The results demonstrated that the stallion can recognise and respond to sperm autoantigens by producing circulating antisperm antibodies, primarily of the IgG class. Such autoantibodies appeared 2-4 weeks after inoculation and persisted for 6-20 weeks. Immunochemical characterisation by western blot identified two major sperm autoantigens, with molecular weights of 70 kD and 62 kD. Control pony stallions immunised with adjuvants alone failed to exhibit ...

Solitary osteochondroma of the nasal bone in a horse.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1994   Volume 84, Issue 1 25-31
Adair HS, Duncan RB, Toal RL.A 3-year-old Appaloosa stallion with a 4 cm x 4 cm x 2.5 cm mass protruding from his nasal bone was evaluated. Radiographs revealed an osseous mass, with a radiopaque outer margin and several radiolucent areas within the body of the mass. The mass was surgically removed and evaluated histopathologically. The histopathological diagnosis was osteochondroma. This case represent the first reported occurrence of an osteochondroma arising from intramembraneous bone in the horse.
Insemination results with slow-cooled stallion semen stored for approximately 40 hours.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1994   Volume 35, Issue 3 257-262 doi: 10.1186/BF03548330
Heiskanen ML, Huhtinen M, Pirhonen A, Mäenpää PH.Semen from 3 stallions was extended using 2 methods (Kenney extender and a modified Kenney extender), slowly cooled, and stored for 41 +/- 6 (s.d.) h before insemination. An insemination dose (40 ml) contained 1.5-2 billion spermatozoa. In the experiment, 26 mares were inseminated in 30 cycles. The pregnancy rate per cycle obtained with sperm stored in the Kenney extender was 87% (n = 15). When the semen was extended with the modified extender, centrifuged and stored, the pregnancy rate was 60% (n = 15). Inseminations were done every other day until ovulation was detected. If a mare ovulated m...
Post-thaw motility and longevity of motility of imipramine-induced ejaculates of pony stallions.
Theriogenology    January 1, 1994   Volume 42, Issue 3 475-481 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(94)90685-c
McDonnell SM, Oristaglio Turner RM.Imipramine-induced ex copula ejaculates (11) and fractionated in copula ejaculates were collected from each of 5 pony stallions for freezing in 5-ml straws (6), using a modified Kenney glucose skim-milk extender (2). Initial post-thaw total and progressive motilities and daily post-thaw total and progressive motilities, as well as the number of days to reach 0 progressively motile spermatozoa, were also similar for the 2 methods of collection. The percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa both before freezing and after thawing were also similar for in copula and ex copula ejaculates. Co...
[The genital microflora in the stallion–microbiological study of presecretion samples from 1972 to 1991].
DTW. Deutsche tierarztliche Wochenschrift    January 1, 1994   Volume 101, Issue 1 18-22
Scherbarth R, Pózvári M, Heilkenbrinker T, Mumme J.From 1972 to 1991, presecretion on an average of 183 stallions per year had been examined. Facultatively pathogenic germs were ascertained in 13.5% of the samples. However, the portion showed considerable annual fluctuation, as did the percentage of the different kinds of germs. In most of the cases, only minimal growth had been observed in culture. Except for the total percentage, these results are contradictory to those we found during the examination of cervical swabs of mares. In order to ascertain the importance of the respective results and to render possible a correct interpretation, th...
Preservation of ejaculated and epididymal stallion spermatozoa by cooling and freezing.
Theriogenology    January 1, 1994   Volume 41, Issue 4 809-818 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(94)90497-7
Braun J, Sakai M, Hochi S, Oguri N.The suitability of ejaculated and epididymal stallion spermatozoa for cooled storage (5 degrees C) and cryopreservation was examined in 5 ejaculates from each of 6 stallions and in spermatozoa recovered from the cauda epididymidis after castration of these stallions. The percentage of progressively motile spermatozoa, examined by subjective estimation (cooled samples) or by computerized analysis (frozen-thawed samples), was used as parameter. In ejaculated semen samples containing 5 and 25% seminal plasma in a skim milk glucose extender, the lower amount of seminal plasma supported spermatozoa...
