Severe renal hemorrhage caused by pyelonephritis in 7 horses: clinical and ultrasonographic evaluation. Case records of 7 horses diagnosed with pyelonephritis were reviewed to determine common features that might aid in diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this disease. All 7 horses had been admitted for evaluation of hematuria. During cystoscopy of 5 horses, hemorrhage was observed from one or both ureters. Uterine involution, day and variance of first postpartum ovulation in mares treated with progesterone and estradiol-17beta for 1 or 2 days postpartum. The effects of a single or double regimen of exogenous progesterone and estradiol-17beta (P/E, total dose 300 mg P/20 mg E) were investigated in 50 postparturient Quarter Horse mares. Septic flexor tendon core lesions in five horses. Intratendonous infection in the absence of any clinical evidence of a wound has not, to our knowledge, been described previously in horses. A lipoma of the extensor tendon sheaths in a horse. This report describes the identification and surgical removal of a lipoma from the extensor tendon sheaths of a horse. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a lipoma of the extensor tendon sheaths of a horse. Ultrasonographic evaluation was crucial to patient management, providing information regarding the soft tissue mass characteristics, tumor margins and synovial involvement prior to surgical exploration. Perirectal abscess, colic, and dyschezia in a horse. A quarter horse gelding with intermittent colic was diagnosed with a perirectal abscess and dyschezia. Rectal ultrasonography identified a multiloculated, fluid-filled mass. A perirectal abscess was diagnosed when the mass ruptured and drained into the rectum. The abscess was treated successfully with warm soapy water enemas and trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.

Percutaneous ultrasound-guided pyelography aided diagnosis of ectopic ureter and hydronephrosis in a 3-week-old filly. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous pyelography has previously been used in dogs to diagnose ectopic ureter. To the authors' knowledge its use has never been reported in the horse. This paper reports the technique used in a three-week-old filly with a suspected ectopic ureter. Pyelography can be performed under sedation and is a relatively simple, safe procedure. The technique enables assessment of individual renal function through collection and analysis of urine from each renal pelvis.
Ultrasound appearance of an equine testicular seminoma. A 16-year-old thoroughbred stallion developed sudden swelling of the left testicle. The stallion had previously been regarded as a unilateral cryptorchid. Ultrasound examination of the left testicle revealed a diffusely heterogeneous parenchyma. The testicle was diffusely hypoechoic with ill defined regions of hyperechogenicity giving the appearance of hypoechoic nodules throughout the testicular parenchyma. Marsupialization and iodine sclerotherapy of a branchial cyst in a horse. A 6-month-old Morgan colt was evaluated because of a 10-cm right-sided retropharyngeal swelling. The swelling was soft and moveable on examination, and palpation did not elicit signs of pain. [The fetlock tunnel syndrome in horses: literature review and retrospective study]. The annular ligament constriction is characterized by a disproportion between the available space and the contents within the fetlock tunnel. Use of a bioabsorbable implant for the repair of severed digital flexor tendons in four horses. A new bioabsorbable implant composed of poly-L-lactic acid was used to repair the severed digital flexor tendons of four horses. The limbs were immobilised with distal casts which were changed after six to eight weeks and removed after 12 to 16 weeks.
