Gastrointestinal transit time, bowel movements pe...
Alterations in the chondrocyte surfaceome in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines.
BMC molecular and cell biology    June 26, 2020   Volume 21, Issue 1 47 doi: 10.1186/s12860-020-00288-9
Jeremiasse B, Matta C, Fellows CR, Boocock DJ, Smith JR, Liddell S, Lafeber F, van Spil WE, Mobasheri A.Chondrocytes are exposed to an inflammatory micro-environment in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of articular cartilage in joint diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In OA, degenerative changes and low-grade inflammation within the joint transform the behaviour and metabolism of chondrocytes, disturb the balance between ECM synthesis and degradation, and alter the osmolality and ionic composition of the micro-environment. We hypothesize that chondrocytes adjust their physiology to the inflammatory microenvironment by modulating the expression of cell surface prote...
Evaluation of Brix Refractometry for the Estimation of Colostrum Quality in Jennies.
Journal of equine veterinary science    June 26, 2020   Volume 92 103172 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2020.103172
Donkey placenta does not allow the passage of immunoglobulins; thus, foals are born hypogammaglobulinemic and an adequate intake of high-quality colostrum in the first 24 hours of life is crucial for the surviving. The study aims to assess the relation between colostrum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration evaluated by the single radial immunodiffusion (SRID) test and the Brix refractometer in donkeys to establish a cutoff value for high quality of colostrum based on Brix refractometry. Colostrum was collected at foaling, and at 6, 12, and 24 hours after foaling from the left and the right h...

Coat Color Roan Shows Association with KIT Variants and No Evidence of Lethality in Icelandic Horses.
Genes    June 22, 2020   Volume 11, Issue 6 doi: 10.3390/genes11060680
Voß K, Tetens J, Thaller G, Becker D.Roan (Rn) horses show a typical seasonal change of color. Their body is covered with colored and white hair. We performed a descriptive statistical analysis of breeding records of Icelandic horses to challenge the hypothesis of roan being lethal in utero under homozygous condition. The roan to non-roan ratio of foals from roan × roan matings revealed homozygous roan Icelandic horses to be viable. Even though roan is known to be inherited in a dominant mode and epistatic to other coat colors, the causative mutation is still unknown. Nevertheless, an association between roan phenotype and the K...
Replication of Equine arteritis virus is efficiently suppressed by purine and pyrimidine biosynthesis inhibitors.
Scientific reports    June 22, 2020   Volume 10, Issue 1 10100 doi: 10.1038/s41598-020-66944-4
Valle-Casuso JC, Gaudaire D, Martin-Faivre L, Madeline A, Dallemagne P, Pronost S, Munier-Lehmann H, Zientara S, Vidalain PO, Hans A.RNA viruses are responsible for a large variety of animal infections. Equine Arteritis Virus (EAV) is a positive single-stranded RNA virus member of the family Arteriviridae from the order Nidovirales like the Coronaviridae. EAV causes respiratory and reproductive diseases in equids. Although two vaccines are available, the vaccination coverage of the equine population is largely insufficient to prevent new EAV outbreaks around the world. In this study, we present a high-throughput in vitro assay suitable for testing candidate antiviral molecules on equine dermal cells infected by EAV. Using t...

Animals : an open access journal from MDPI    June 22, 2020   Volume 10, Issue 6 1075 doi: 10.3390/ani10061075
Cervantes I, Gutiérrez JP, García-Ballesteros S, Varona L.The racing time and rank at finish traits are commonly used for endurance horse breeding programs as a measure of their performance. Even so, given the nature of endurance competitions, many horses do not finish the race. However, the exclusion of non placed horses from the dataset could have an influence on the prediction of individual breeding values. The objective of the present paper was to develop a multitrait model including race time (T), rank (R) and placing (P), with different methodologies, to improve the genetic evaluation in endurance competitions in Spain. The database contained 6...
