Amyloid in the horse: a report of nine cases.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 277-285 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01524.x
van Andel AC, Gruys E, Kroneman J, Veerkamp J.Out of approximately 16,000 horses referred for clinical examination, nine had amyloidosis. Six of these horses had localised amyloid deposits in the wall of the nasal meatus and ventral turbinates associated with epistaxis. Horse 1 also developed malignant histiolymphocytic lymphosarcomas. The amyloid deposits were potassium permanganate-resistant and tryptophan-positive. Gel filtration of solubilised amyloid fibrils from Horse 1 revealed a major retarded fraction with an apparent molecular weight of 20 kD. This protein had an amino acid composition similar to human AL-amyloid proteins and ho...
Chylothorax associated with a congenital diaphragmatic defect in a foal.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 304-306 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01531.x
Mair TS, Pearson H, Waterman AE, Barr FJ, Longstaffe JA.PLEURAL effusions (the presence of excessive quantities of pleural fluid) have been associated with a variety of disease processes affecting the equine thorax. The majority of reported cases have involved exudative effusions associated with pneumonia, lung abscesses or neoplasia (Raphel and Beech 1982 Mair 1987). Transudative effusions have been less com• monly described, being associated with such conditions as hypoproteinaemia. cardiac failure and diaphragmatic rupture. Chylothorax, the accumulation of chylous fluid in the mediastinum and/or pleural cavity, is a relatively uncommon conditi...
Verification of ineffectual activity of ivermectin against adult Onchocerca spp in the ligamentum nuchae of horses.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 7 983-985
Lyons ET, Drudge JH, Tolliver SC.Ivermectin paste formulation (200 micrograms/kg) was administered orally to 27 horses (13 Thoroughbreds and 14 of mixed breeding) to evaluate activity against adult Onchocerca spp in the ligamentum nuchae. Ages, known or estimated, of the horses ranged from 1 to 22 years. Single or multiple doses (1 to 5) of the drug were given to each horse. When multiple doses were administered, the intervals between treatments ranged from 7 to 92 days. At 27 to 171 days after initial treatment (single dose or first of multiple doses), the horses were killed. Some of the horses treated more than once were ki...
Intestinal carcinoid in a mare: an etiologic consideration for chronic colic in horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1988   Volume 193, Issue 1 87-88
Orsini JA, Orsini PG, Sepesy L, Acland H, Gillette D.Intestinal carcinoid, or argentaffinoma, should be an etiologic consideration for horses with chronic colic. A mare was referred with a history of chronic colic. Previously, the signs of colic had subsided in response to impiric treatment, but recent episodes of colic did not. Clinical signs and results of physical examination supported the finding of strangulating obstruction of the small intestine. Exploratory celiotomy revealed internal herniation with simultaneous volvulus of the jejunum and accompanying carcinoid.
Effect of splenectomy on exercise-induced pulmonary and systemic hypertension in ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 7 1169-1172
Davis JL, Manohar M.Large increases in systemic and pulmonary arterial pressures of exercising healthy ponies have been observed. Because exercise causes a considerable increase in PCV of ponies, we examined the effect of splenectomy on exercise-induced changes in systemic and pulmonary pressures. These pressures (taken with catheter-tip micromanometers) and indicator dilution cardiac output were determined on 9 healthy ponies that had undergone splenectomy 4 to 9 weeks before the study. Data obtained at rest and during submaximal (10.5 to 11.0 mph) and maximal (14 to 15 mph) exercise from these ponies were compa...
Immunoassay detection of drugs in racing horses. VI. Detection of furosemide (Lasix) in equine blood by a one step ELISA and PCFIA.
Research communications in chemical pathology and pharmacology    July 1, 1988   Volume 61, Issue 1 111-128
Woods WE, Wang CJ, Houtz PK, Tai HH, Wood T, Weckman TJ, Yang JM, Chang SL, Blake JW, Tobin T.A one step enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a particle concentration fluorescent immunoassay (PCFIA) test for furosemide were evaluated as part of a panel of pre- and post-race tests for illegal medication of racing horses. These tests are very sensitive to furosemide with an I-50 for furosemide of about 20 ng/ml. The test is also rapid; an average pre-race complement of 10 samples can be analyzed in 90 minutes or less. The ELISA test results can be read with an inexpensive spectrophotometer, or even by eye. Both the PCFIA test and the ELISA test readily detect the presence of fur...
Clinical significance of aerobic bacterial flora of the uterus, vagina, vestibule, and clitoral fossa of clinically normal mares.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1988   Volume 193, Issue 1 72-75
Hinrichs K, Cummings MR, Sertich PL, Kenney RM.Swab specimens for bacterial culture were obtained from the uterus, vagina, vestibule, and clitoral fossa of 48 mares that had normal reproductive tracts, no history of reproductive problems, and no inflammation on evaluation of endometrial biopsy. The mares were predominantly Thoroughbred and Standardbred. Swab specimens of the vagina were obtained through a sterile speculum; swab specimens of the uterus were obtained by use of a double-guarded, occluded culture instrument. Fifteen (31%) of the uterine swab specimens and 20 (42%) of the vaginal swab specimens yielded growth on aerobic culture...
Neuromuscular and cardiovascular effects of atracurium administered to healthy horses anesthetized with halothane.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 7 1066-1071
Hildebrand SV, Arpin D.Neuromuscular and cardiovascular effects of atracurium, a nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, were evaluated in 10 halothane-anesthetized adult horses. Hind limb digital extensor tension (hoof twitch) was measured with a strain gauge to quantitate the muscle relaxant effects of atracurium. Response of facial muscles was compared with hoof twitch. Five injections of atracurium were given. Initial mean (+/- SEM) dosage of 0.07 +/- 0.01 mg of atracurium/kg of body weight caused 98.6 +/- 0.8% reduction of the preinjection hoof twitch. Subsequent dosages of 0.04 +/- 0.003 mg/kg induced a ...

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis of horses: an association with acute enteritis.
Veterinary pathology    July 1, 1988   Volume 25, Issue 4 277-281 doi: 10.1177/030098588802500405
Slocombe RF, Slauson DO.Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis was identified in 19 horses. In 16 cases mycotic lesions were associated with enterocolitis; 14 cases appeared to result from Salmonella infection. Pulmonary lesions included multifocal areas of acute necrosis, leukocytoclastic vasculitis, and thrombosis with fibrinosuppurative inflammation surrounding mycelial masses. Thromboemboli with fungi were in the brain and kidneys of three cases. Factors which appeared to predispose to pulmonary aspergillosis included corticosteroid therapy, disseminated neoplasms, hepatitis, pleuritis, and peritonitis. This study sugg...
Embryo reduction before day 11 in mares with twin conceptuses.
Journal of animal science    July 1, 1988   Volume 66, Issue 7 1727-1731 doi: 10.2527/jas1988.6671727x
Ginther OJ, Bergfelt DR.Incidence of embryo reduction (natural elimination of one member of a twin set) before d 11 was studied by comparing the number of ultrasonically detected conceptuses per ovulation between single and double ovulators. Effect of unilateral (n = 24) vs bilateral (n = 26) double ovulations on the incidence of embryo reduction also was considered. Each of 50 double-ovulating mares was matched with two single ovulators yielding 100 ovulations, or potential embryos, per group. Frequency with which an ovulation resulted in a conceptus was greater for single ovulators (85%, P less than .01) and for bi...
Sudden death attributable to exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in racehorses: nine cases (1981-1983).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1988   Volume 193, Issue 1 102-106
Gunson DE, Sweeney CR, Soma LR.Pathologic changes are described in 11 horses that died during racing or training; 9 died of acute pulmonary hemorrhage (exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage), 1 died of exsanguination, and 1 died of CNS trauma. Cardiac lesions were not found in any horse. Severe engorgement of pulmonary vessels, with hemorrhage into alveoli, airways, interstitium, and subpleural tissues, was observed in all 9 horses that died of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage. Infiltration of eosinophils and/or lymphocytes around vessels and airways was seen in 6 horses. Focally extensive fibrosis was observed in the ...
Some aspects of the epidemiology of equine salmonellosis.
Australian veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 65, Issue 7 221-223 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1988.tb14463.x
Begg AP, Johnston KG, Hutchins DR, Edwards DJ.A survey of 2 horse populations was done to detect the number of asymptomatic faecal excretors of Salmonella sp. 1201 faecal samples from 250 horses hospitalised at the University of Sydney were cultured. Three serotypes, S. typhimurium (4 horses), S. anatum (2) and S. tennessee (1) were isolated from 7 horses (2.8%). None was detected in 75 mares similarly examined at a thoroughbred stud farm. In retrospect, S. typhimurium was also the most common (70%) of the 19 serotypes recovered from 171 horses with clinical salmonellosis seen at Camden, 1969 to 1986. Forty cases occurring since 1983 were...
Characterization of the serological cross-reactivity between glycoproteins of the human immunodeficiency virus and equine infectious anaemia virus.
The Journal of general virology    July 1, 1988   Volume 69 ( Pt 7) 1711-1717 doi: 10.1099/0022-1317-69-7-1711
Montelaro RC, Robey WG, West MD, Issel CJ, Fischinger PJ.The reported serological relatedness between the major glycoproteins of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV gp120) and equine infectious anaemia virus (EIAV gp90) was examined using purified antigens in radioimmunoprecipitation (RIP), radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunoblot assays with reference serum from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, an anti-gp120 goat serum and EIAV-infected horse serum. To assess the contributions of glycoprotein oligosaccharide and peptide components to any observed reactivities, antigens treated with endoglycosidase F to remove carbohydrate were assayed...
Validation of a radioimmunoassay for measurement of gastrin in equine serum.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 7 1179-1183
Young DW, Smyth GB.A commercial radioimmunoassay kit designed for measuring gastrin in human serum was validated for use with equine serum. This nonextraction, double-antibody procedure uses an antiserum with broad specificity for molecular forms of gastrin. Synthetic human gastrin (G17-I) was added to pooled equine serum, and the observed assay values were compared with the mass added. Recovery was 99 to 115% in the gastrin concentration range of 40 to 640 pg/ml. Dilutions of postprandial serum with serum from fasted horses were assayed, and the inhibition curves were compared with those of the human gastrin ki...
Respiratory airflow patterns in ponies at rest and during exercise. Art T, Lekeux P.The exercise-induced changes in the equine breathing pattern were studied by analyzing tidal breathing flow-volume loops recorded in ten ponies both at rest and during a standardized exercise. Airflow, tidal volume, esophageal pressure and mask pressure were simultaneously recorded before, during and after a treadmill exercise. From the collected data, respiratory frequency and total pulmonary resistance were calculated, tidal breathing flow-volume loops were retraced using a computerized method and loop indices were measured for each period of the experimental protocol. For each pony, results...
Y chromosome length variation and its significance in the horse.
The Journal of heredity    July 1, 1988   Volume 79, Issue 4 311-313
Power MM.The results of Y chromosome measurements in 31 horses are presented. The Y chromosome was identified using G-, R-, and C-banding techniques. From G-banded metaphase spreads, total X and Y chromosome and separate proximal (P) and distal (D) Y-band measurements were made. Within this group, the Y/X ratio (%) for each animal varied from 18.93 to 43.95, with an overall mean of 34.85 and a coefficient of variation (CV) of 16.12. The overall mean P/X ratio (%) was 23.57 with a CV of 20.57, compared with an overall mean D/X ratio (%) of 11.26 with a CV of 15.18. The group studied included 27 Thorough...
Oxidative capacity of skeletal muscle fibres in racehorses: histochemical versus biochemical analysis.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 291-295 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01527.x
Valberg S, Essén Gustavsson B, Skoglund Wallberg H.The oxidative capacity of skeletal muscle fibre types was evaluated histochemically using the nicotinamide dinucleotide diaphorase (NADH-D) staining, and biochemically by measuring the activity of citrate synthase (CS) in both whole muscle samples and in pools of fibres of identified type. Duplicate determinations of the NADH-D staining pattern resulted in standard deviations (sd) between duplicates of 6 and 11 per cent for two observers. The NADH-D pattern was found to differ between observers. Duplicate determinations of CS activity in the same fibre pools resulted in an sd value of 2.9 mumo...
The foramen ovale of the foetal and neonatal foal.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 255-260 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01517.x
MacDonald AA, Fowden AL, Silver M, Ousey J, Rossdale PD.Hearts from 24 foals were studied; 10 were from foetuses ranging in gestational age from 230 to 322 days and 14 were from newborn and young foals aged between birth and 17 days. The foramen ovale and associated vena caval and atrial structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Additional observations were made by light and transmission electron microscopy. A tube-like flap of tissue was observed, extending from the aperture in the caudal vena cava to the lumen of the left atrium. In the younger foetuses, the distal end of this tube was covered with a thread-like network of tissue....

Characterization of the genome of equine herpesvirus 1 subtype 2.
The Journal of general virology    July 1, 1988   Volume 69 ( Pt 7) 1575-1590 doi: 10.1099/0022-1317-69-7-1575
Cullinane AA, Rixon FJ, Davison AJ.The genome structure of equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) subtype 2 was shown by electron microscopic studies and restriction endonuclease site mapping to comprise two covalently linked segments (L, 109 kbp; S, 35 kbp). The S segment contains a unique sequence (US) flanked by a substantial inverted repeat (TRS/IRS). Thus, the genome structure of EHV-1 subtype 2 is similar to that published previously for EHV-1 subtype 1, but the two subtypes differ in the occurrences of EcoRI and BamHI restriction sites. Hybridization studies using cloned EHV-1 DNA showed that the genome of EHV-1 subtype 2 is colin...
Effect of exercise on the partitioning of equine respiratory resistance.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 268-273 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01521.x
Art T, Serteyn D, Lekeux P.Pleural, tracheal, pharyngeal and mask pressures as well as airflow and tidal volume of five ponies on a treadmill (incline 8.3 degrees) were recorded simultaneously while resting, walking, trotting slowly, trotting fast, after standing for 30 secs and 5 mins after the end of the exercise. The curves obtained were used to calculate total pulmonary resistance (RL), lower airway resistance (RLA) and upper airway resistance (RUA). The latter was also divided into nasal resistance (Rnas) and laryngeal plus extrathoracic tracheal resistance (Retr + lar). Furthermore, the inspiratory and expiratory ...

Effects of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone and prostaglandin F-2 alpha on corpus luteum function and timing of the subsequent ovulation in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    July 1, 1988   Volume 83, Issue 2 545-551 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0830545
Johnson AL, Becker SE, Roma ML.Standard bred mares that were cycling normally were treated beginning on Days 9 or 10 of the oestrous cycle with repeated pulses of GnRH (20 micrograms/h) and/or a single injection of prostaglandin (PG)F-2 alpha (alfaprostol, 3 mg), and were subsequently bled and palpated daily until the next ovulation. GnRH treatment increased serum concentrations of LH and progesterone at 4 days after the start of treatment compared to controls. The combination of PGF-2 alpha + GnRH treatment resulted in an immediate decline in serum progesterone values, and subsequently decreased the interval to next ovulat...
Effect of equine ehrlichial colitis on the hemostatic system in ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 7 1030-1036
Morris DD, Messick J, Whitlock RH, Palmer J, Ward MV, Feldman BF.Hemostatic function was determined in 10 ponies at various times after inoculation with Ehrlichia risticii to determine whether equine ehrlichial colitis (EEC) caused changes in the hemostatic system and to determine the prognostic value of hemostatic function tests during EEC. Mean platelet count; plasma fibrinogen, fibronectin, factor VIII: coagulant, alpha 2-antiplasmin, and plasminogen values; and serum concentrations of fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products changed significantly (P less than 0.05) from base line (day 0, before inoculation) during 18 days after inoculation with E risticii...
Nonsystemic causes of the downer cow syndrome.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Food animal practice    July 1, 1988   Volume 4, Issue 2 413-433 doi: 10.1016/s0749-0720(15)31057-4
Cox VS.Traditionally, the downer cow has been considered a metabolic problem. This viewpoint cannot account for the pelvic limb predilection of the condition. Whatever the primary cause of recumbency, all recumbent animals are susceptible to pressure damage. The extensive literature on pressure damage in human beings and horses is reviewed. Miscellaneous causes of and contributing factors to bovine recumbency are reviewed. Concepts and details of diagnosis, prevention, management, and therapy are discussed.
