Amylase - Feed Ingredient
Amylase is an enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of starch into simpler sugars such as maltose and glucose. In equine nutrition, it may be included as an exogenous (supplemental) enzyme in feed or supplement formulations to support carbohydrate digestion, particularly in processed diets high in starch.
Amylase is typically derived from microbial fermentation or plant sources and included in dried or encapsulated form to ensure stability during feed manufacturing. Its inclusion is intended to aid pre-cecal starch digestion, potentially reducing the risk of undigested starch reaching the hindgut, which can disrupt microbial balance and cause digestive upset.
While horses naturally produce amylase in their saliva and pancreas, the enzyme activity is relatively low compared to other monogastric animals. Therefore, exogenous amylase may be considered in specific feeding scenarios, such as high-grain diets, performance horses, or animals with compromised digestive efficiency. Its use is functional rather than nutritional and is typically included in enzyme blends or digestive support products.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Amylase as an ingredient.
