Bacillus subtilis - Feed Ingredient

Bacillus subtilis is a spore-forming, Gram-positive bacterium used as a direct-fed microbial (probiotic) in equine feed and supplements. It is valued for its ability to withstand extreme conditions, including high temperatures and low pH, making it a suitable probiotic for inclusion in pelleted or processed feeds. The spores of Bacillus subtilis can survive the upper gastrointestinal tract and germinate in the hindgut, where they may support microbial balance and digestive function.

As a probiotic, Bacillus subtilis may contribute to the modulation of the gut microbiome through competitive exclusion of pathogens, production of antimicrobial compounds, and secretion of enzymes that assist in nutrient breakdown. The bacterium is also known for its ability to produce extracellular enzymes such as proteases and amylases, which may contribute to feed digestibility.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Bacillus subtilis as an ingredient.
