Bentonite Clay - Feed Ingredient

Bentonite clay is a naturally occurring, absorbent aluminum phyllosilicate composed primarily of the mineral montmorillonite. It is formed from the weathering of volcanic ash and is characterized by its high cation exchange capacity and swelling properties. In feed applications, bentonite is typically used in processed, purified form as a fine powder or granule.

In equine nutrition, bentonite clay is used as a functional additive rather than a nutrient source. It serves as an anti-caking agent, pellet binder, and mycotoxin adsorbent, helping to improve feed consistency and reduce the effects of potential contaminants. Its adsorptive capacity allows it to bind moisture, toxins, and certain heavy metals in the gastrointestinal tract.

While bentonite clay is considered safe at controlled inclusion rates, it is generally not recommended for long-term continuous feeding. Due to its strong binding properties, prolonged use may interfere with the absorption of medications and essential nutrients, including certain trace minerals. Therefore, its use is typically limited to short-term applications or specific feed formulations designed for targeted support.
