Bifidobacterium longum is a species of Gram-positive, anaerobic bacteria commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of mammals, including horses. It belongs to the Bifidobacterium genus, which is widely recognized for its role in maintaining gut microbial balance. As a probiotic, B. longum is often used in feed and supplement formulations to support intestinal health and microbial diversity.

In equine nutrition, B. longum is included in probiotic blends to modulate the hindgut environment, potentially improving fiber digestion and stabilizing gut flora, especially during periods of stress, dietary change, or antibiotic use. It is typically administered in a lyophilized (freeze-dried) form to maintain viability and can be incorporated into pelleted feeds, top-dress powders, or paste formulations.
