Bran - Feed Ingredient
Bran refers to the outer layers of cereal grains that are removed during the milling process to produce refined flours. Common types of bran used in equine nutrition include wheat bran, rice bran, and oat bran, each with slightly different nutrient profiles but generally rich in fiber and phosphorus.
In equine feed, bran is used as a fiber source and to increase palatability. It is moderately fermentable in the hindgut and provides a mix of insoluble and soluble fiber, depending on the grain of origin. Bran also contributes protein, fat (notably in rice bran), and B-vitamins to the diet. It is often included in mashes or pelleted feeds and may be used to soften feed texture or improve intake in picky eaters or convalescing horses.
Feeding large quantities of bran, especially wheat bran, can lead to imbalanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratios due to its high phosphorus and low calcium content.
