Calcium Hydroxide - Feed Ingredient
Calcium Hydroxide, also known as slaked lime or hydrated lime, is a white, alkaline compound with the chemical formula Ca(OH)₂. It is produced through the hydration of calcium oxide (quicklime), resulting in a fine, dry powder. It is commonly used in industrial processes, agriculture, and feed manufacturing due to its strong alkalinity and reactivity.
In animal nutrition, including equine feed, calcium hydroxide is sometimes used as a processing aid or pH regulator rather than as a direct nutritional additive. It may be involved in treating or preserving certain feed ingredients, such as in the alkaline treatment of straw or other fibrous forages to increase digestibility. In this context, calcium hydroxide helps break down lignin and improve the availability of structural carbohydrates.
Although it does contain calcium, calcium hydroxide is not typically used as a primary calcium supplement.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Calcium Hydroxide as an ingredient.
