Corn Starch - Feed Ingredient
Corn starch is a carbohydrate-rich feed ingredient derived from the endosperm of corn kernels through a wet milling process. It is composed primarily of amylose and amylopectin, two polysaccharides that are broken down into glucose during digestion. Corn starch serves as a highly digestible energy source, particularly in the form of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs).
In equine nutrition, corn starch is included in feed formulations to provide readily available energy, particularly for performance horses or those with high caloric demands. However, its high NSC content can pose a risk for horses prone to metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), or laminitis.
Corn starch also plays a functional role in feed manufacturing. During pelleting, its gelatinization under heat and moisture conditions enhances pellet binding and durability. This property contributes to improved pellet quality and structural integrity in finished feed products.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Corn Starch as an ingredient.
