Corn Syrup - Feed Ingredient
Corn syrup is a concentrated liquid sweetener derived from the enzymatic or acid hydrolysis of cornstarch. It primarily contains glucose along with varying amounts of maltose and higher oligosaccharides, depending on the degree of hydrolysis. Corn syrup is available in several forms, including light, dark, and high-fructose variants, though high-fructose corn syrup is less commonly used in equine products.
In equine feed and supplement formulations, corn syrup is utilized mainly for its functional roles—improving palatability, acting as a humectant to retain moisture, and serving as a carrier or stabilizer for other ingredients. It provides a source of rapidly available carbohydrate energy and is often found in oral pastes, gels, and some liquid feeds or supplements.
