Menthol - Feed Ingredient
Menthol is a naturally occurring compound found in mint plants, particularly peppermint (Mentha × piperita) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). It can also be produced synthetically. Menthol is characterized by its cooling sensation and distinctive minty aroma, which result from its interaction with cold-sensitive receptors in the skin and mucous membranes.
In equine products, menthol is typically used as a non-nutritive additive in topical applications, liniments, and inhalants. It serves as a counterirritant to provide a cooling effect and temporary relief from minor muscle and joint discomfort. Menthol may also be included in formulations designed to support respiratory function, where its aromatic properties help open nasal passages. It is not used as a feed ingredient for nutritional purposes and does not contribute to dietary energy, protein, or vitamin/mineral content.
