Microbial-based additives include live microorganisms such as yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and bacteria (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus), as well as their derivatives like bacterial or yeast extracts and fermentation products. These additives are used in equine feeds to support gut microbial balance, improve fiber digestion, and enhance nutrient utilization.
Extracts and postbiotics may include cell wall components (e.g., beta-glucans, mannan-oligosaccharides) or fermentation metabolites that influence gut function and immunity. Enzymes produced through microbial fermentation, such as cellulase or xylanase, may also be included to assist in the breakdown of fibrous feed components.
